Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

He had multiple opportunities to impact the game but failed with just about every opportunity. Whether it was the fumble that led to a goal or over-cooking a handball, he just didn't have the poise to pull it off.

I think mentally the moment got the better of him. But that's been my criticism all along. He just doesnt have the mentality to compete when it's most needed.

I thought he did well to get in the right positions but struggled to execute. It looked like he was in his head and trying to prove his place in the role.

It was almost self sabotaging, you could see him doing the one thing he was focusing on not wanting to do. He needs to have a positive mindset, focusing only on what he does want to do.

My out of the box idea is to play him again, talk up the positives, and ask him to play like there is no tomorrow - just to play hard and really enjoy himself. His challenge to should be to re-fall in love with the game.

Almost every comment relating to a player is mental/mindset.

Is it just Grundy/Heeney/Gulden not mentally broken?

Some just burn out quicker than others and dont have the will to keep performing week in week out for a decade.

Jesus! I hope that's not the explanation. He's only 26 and at the beginning of a 5 year contract. Would be a monumental stuff up.

I think it's much more likely that something else is going on and he'll come good, hopefully sooner rather than later. Otherwise it's going to be a long 5 years for all concerned.

Playing with fear. I don't think a stint in 2s will help, he'll accumulate possessions then get caught out in 1st again with the fumbles. It's the mindset now.

Need to do a wicks and play him in a new position, up fwd. Get him completely away from the defensive half & the pressure on his disposal use associated with it.

Keep his role simple in the front half. Provide tackling pressure & take first opportunity at goal. Tbh we need to change our fwd half defence anyway, maybe the move will help him & the team. Maybe playing in the same area as his mate Wilbur will be helpful for chemistry too.

He will have plenty of suitors lining up for his services.
Quality player out of position and out of form.
If Swans have put him on the table he will go a long way to securing our Academy players we want and whatever else we think we can get.

I actually like him as a player. I will be sorry to see him go. But it is a business and winning games is what it is all about. You need to put yourself as a club in the best position to do that. If trading him does that then so be it.

We draft in lots of mids and they get shuffled back and shuffled forward. Not always the best positions for the players we drafted in.
Mids to backs include Rampe, Lloyd, Roberts, Cunningham, Mills, Florent, Campbell even McInerney sometimes.
Mids to forwards Campbell, Parker, Heeney, Sheldrick to some extent etc

Sheldrick was played forward just to get him in. He was locked out of the middle for a while.

We now have Cleary doing the same shuffle. Inside mid is his gig. But that aint happening.

But that is what happens at the Swans.

We had to jettison Parker to give some of the young guys a go.
Now apparently we are jettisoning Florent. He won't get back in the mids. Mills, Roberts, Cunningham, Carmichael will keep him out of the backs.

Played almost 200 games and is on the outer. From a list perspective I think that is healthy. We keep regenerating. But from a player perspective it must be very hard.

Particularly hard in Florent's case given the circumstances in which he came to the club just after his father died and Horse promised his mother that we'd look after him. We have but....

We usually look after players that we jettison. Listed players to rookie players.
Unlike other clubs that just cut players.
I know that if we intend to cut players we explore all options for a future for these players. I think that is why we are always one of the last clubs to announce our delistings every year. There is a sense of sensitivity to each player to ensure they leave the club with a contract somewhere or that we can get the best outcome we can manage to ensure the player is best able in the future.

Tim Membrey is a perfect example

What we did with Konstanty.

Doesnt that happen everywhere?

Unless you're a tall KPP, if you're a gun junior you're likely to end up in the midfield so that will be your most natural position. So most people will play "out of position" as not everyone can be a mid.

Would be a very weird call to 'regenerate' the list by getting rid of a 200 game, proven, durable (a big factor imo), relatively cheap 26 yr old who has been developed in a manner that should see him in good stead to perform as he approaches his prime years - in the hopes that the players we 'regenerate' with are durable, 200 game players by the time they hit 26.

If it goes down that path i'd be pretty pissed off tbh. Whoever gets him wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry as to how fortunate they are.

I'd get it if this list wasn't going places, but we all know, albeit a couple of small holes, that this list is pretty well primed to compete at the pointy end consistently over the next few years. It's not like we are in a position where we have to make swift list changes in preparation for the future. Durable, experienced senior players are like gold when in this position, even if it means he isn't quite afforded a guaranteed start. Our team buckled due to injuries this year and the one bloke not made of paper is being asked to leave.

Isn't he contracted (indeed just recontracted last year)? I know contracted players get traded all the time, but people are talking like this is a formality.

If it does happen, I'll be disappointed but understand that like Hewett and other examples, it's a list management call.

How did he play ? and Roberts played a full game in the AFL
He was pretty good, found plenty of it but was hard for him to really impact given how dysfunctional the team is in general.

I think he's been hard done by. Yes, he has had plenty of poor moments this year but so have many others. All our AFL half back flankers were crap on the weekend and Blakey and especially Roberts have been for a while. Oli has been solid enough (without being spectacular) in the VFL and I would recall him this week at the expense of Roberts.

MR was on the wing

He would start centre bounces on the wing but seemed to roll back a fair bit. Regardless, Ollie could do this role and has done so in the past. Roberts is playing with zero confidence which is effecting his composure and deccision making. Could definitely do with a stint in reserves.
Had a better game overall than Campbell

The issue with Florent is that his issues have always seemed to be between the ears in terms of playing with confidence, consistency etc. Lloyd's a rock solid veteran who was playing a certain way in a certain role and so all he needed was a circuit-breaker to make him play a different way in a different role.

I fear that's the difference and why simply dropping Florent and hoping he finds form in the VFL isn't gonna be as clear-cut a solution as it was with Lloyd. He's looked extremely fumbly and nervous and just overall underwhelming in the few senior appearances since he was initially demoted to sub against Carlton. He's looked like a guy who now knows he's on the bottom, whereas Lloyd has looked like a guy who knows he was too good to be on the bottom.

The worry is that it's just made an already-mentally-vulnerable player that much more mentally-vulnerable. (Not saying I disagree with the move at all; I still think it was the right call by Cox & co.)

Hopefully his performance on the weekend is the start of things turning around for him.
