4 years is about the most we should sign players for.

I think we've got a good approach at the moment where we look at each player & situation as it's own case

There's only 3 players I can recall receiving straight up 6yr deals and all have something in common:
- Dangerfield, Cameron & Smith; when bringing in that big name recruit I can see value in that slightly longer deal, especially as each player would seem to have signed on for less annually than what may have been seen as their value on the open market or for shorter term deals

Cats to sign 5yr extensions, happens but not too frequently:
  • Selwood signed a 5yr extension in 2012, Harry Taylor did the same in 2013 & Hawkins in 2015
  • More recently, Blicavs signed for 5yrs in 2018, while Jack Henry & Stengle signed 5yr deals last year

So we don't necessarily give out many of those 5 or 6 years deals, but we've looked to have got it right when we have signed players on those longer term deals

And for those wondering, the likes of Duncan, Cam Guthrie & Stewart never signed an extension for longer than 4 years, though they may have signed on early which would lock them in for the next 5 years type thing

From what I've heard in the media, clubs are a bit scared at the moment of losing players to free agency/trades, especially with Tassie coming in, which is the reason for the rise of these super long-term contracts for some players. That's probably one of the reasons why Dempsey got 4 years, too (apart from being a good player). To keep Tassie away from him.

Dempsey on the weekend was the first Geelong player since Ablett in 2019 to have 25+ disposals, 6+ direct score assists and score a goal on the weekend apparently.

I know we'd love him to be able to do Selwood or Dangerfield impressions at contests too - and I share frustrations at some efforts - but for balance the very good work he does should also be acknowledged.

He had dropped off in influence through the middle part of the season. He could be our X factor in finals - remember last year were his first 2 - if we get him up and running again.

I think it's kind of crazy how 40 games ago he was an unknown, but now the most predictable part of our game plan seems to be moving the ball through him.
Zach Guthrie broke out/reached physical maturity probably aged 23-24. It's scary to imagine Dempsey taking a similar step around the same age from this platform.

Not that it's guaranteed to happen as everyone develops at different rates, but you'd still assume another 3 pre seasons and 50+ games could only help Ollie.
