Here is the list of Sports Currently in the Olympics:
Archery
Athletics
Badminton
Baseball
Basketball
Canoeing/Kayaking - Slalom, Sprint
Cycling - Mountain Biking, Road, Track
Diving
Equestrian
Fencing
Football
Gymnastics - Artistic, Rythmic, Trampolining
Handball
Hockey
Judo
Modern Pentathlon
Rowing
Sailing
Shooting
Softball
Swimming
Sychronised Swimming
Table Tennis
Taekwondo
Tennis
Triathlon
Volleyball - Beach, Indoor
Water Polo
Weightlifting
Wrestling
If i ran the IOC, these would be the following sports i would drop:
Weightlifting - Drug Cheats, giving the Olympics a bad name.
Boxing - Also giving the Olympics a bad image, mainly because of the cheating.
Table Tennis - It is a 1 sport competition - China.
Badminton - as for Table Tennis - China won all 4 Badminton golds and won 8 of the 12 medals available.
Sychronised Swimming - Seriously, this should not be in the Olympics.
Soccer - It is played by every country, but the city (or country) need to have at least 4 stadium to run a soccer competition, and some countries just dont have the resources to play out a soccer competition. The main reason however, is that the Olympics is not Soccer's maing competition. Just about any player would rather win the FA Cup then the Olympics.
Basketball - like Soccer, the Olympics is not the sports main competition.
Baseball - as above.
Tennis (maybe) - It is not Tennis' main competition, but it is held in much higher regard than it is in the 3 sports mentioned above.
The following sports i would add to the Olympics:
Horse Racing - These would be a great money raiser. I'm sure the IOC would be able to have a contract with the local betting agency (in Australia's case - TAB) and get royalties out of all bets place on the horse racing. Horse Racing is also a very popular pastime and would get fullstadium to just about every race. And if equestrian is in there, why not horse racing.
Golf - Golf, being the one of the most played sports in the word, should be in the Olympics. It would also raise a lot of money because it is so popular.
Surfing (maybe) - Popular past-time, the only problem is it is not the greatest spectator sport. People would be close to 100 metres from the action.
Those are the sports I would change.
Just wondering what sport's you guys would change.
Another thing i want to say is, in Athletics do you think it would be possible to do a Points Race, similar to what they do in Cycling. And also ran a Kieran, similar to the one in Cycling.
This would be the way the Points Race be run:
1. Say about 18 competitors.
2. They run a total of 8 km's (8000 metres) or 20 laps.
3. Every Fourth lap would be the Sprint Lap, making a total of 5 Sprints for the race.
4. The winner of each sprint gets 5 points, second gets 3 points, third gets 2 points, fourth gets 1 point, like in the cycling. The winner of the final sprint recieves double points.
5. The points are tallied and the winner is the person with most (duh!!!)
6. If a competitor laps everyone else, he automaically becomes the leaders like in the cycling.
Anyway, what do you guys think about that idea. I think it COULD be good. The way it could be good is if the runners bunched together, that way the sprint could come from any of the runners.
It wouldn't be interesting if say Haile Gabrasiellese (? spelling) broke from the group and the winner of the Sprint was decided right then.
As for the Keiran. This is the way that would ran.
1. 12 competitors, or whatever they want.
2. They run behind a pace-car like in cycling.
3. The pace-car stays on the track for 3 laps, going 15 km/h for the first lap, 20km/h for the second and 25km/h for the third.
4. The car then leaves the track and it is a sprint-off for the final 400 metres.
5. The clock would start with 200 metres to go, so the World Record would be between 19 and 20 seconds. The WR would be pretty similar to the current 200m WR (19.73) secs. They do get to run into the sprint into the final 200, whereas in the 200m sprint they dont have a running start. But in the Keiran the would've already run 1400 metres, and would be pretty tired, so they would cancel each other out, and end up being pretty similar times.
What do you guys think about adding those 2 events to the athletics calendar.
