Went down to watch tonight at the Norm Minns and walked through the gates just after quarter time only to be faced with the notable absence of anyone taking an entry fee. Looked around but couldn’t spot anyone within cooee. I thought most clubs pack up after half time.

I had heard whispers of Wang paying people to work their gate and canteen last year due to serious lack of volunteers, but surely that’s just drip tray dribble….?

Rodney must’ve got fed up with last minute calls to man the entrance, and rightly so. Wangaratta looking more disjointed than Crezza’s knee cap on a wet deck.

These days I’d have thought a lot of clubs, if not most, would be offering some payment to any combination of gate, bar and canteen chiefs and supporting them with a few volunteers.

For the amount you would take after quarter time it’s probably not worth the trouble to man it.

That doesn’t make any sense to me. Why would you turn down the possibility of a couple of extra hundred $ to the coffers (admittedly I’m not across the split between club and league for the gate takings).

The problem I’ve noted with the Showgrounds is that they tend to have both the main gate and also the river end gate open, which already dilutes your manpower. I know that one handles foot traffic and the other predominantly vehicles, but I can’t think of another ground in the league where they don’t funnel entry through the one entrance.

Unless it’s a really big day my experience is you don’t get many in after quarter time, certainly nothing like enough to makes hundreds.

O and M crowds do tend to be bigger than what I’m used to though.

Murray forward of centre getting dangerous around the forward arc is frightening oppositions, he can’t be tagged, he’ll run you ragged. Brings others in to the game, capable of banging them through from the wing, then you release Marklew from the leash, what the hell are you going to do? Albury are about to get a real wake up call, momentum is a wonderful thing.

Panton Hill has very small clubrooms. They hold their Thursday night dinners in sessions. Prime attended all three after training the juniors, and then with the Seniors. A club official told me they served 220 meals.

Just to confirm with you that club official told you 220 meals and the social media says ALMOST 150 meals .. big difference but anyway glad they made a fortune

Hope they did make some dosh.
They went on a spending spree last year and went from eighth in Div 2 (5-13) in 2022 to eighth in Div 2 (7-1-10) in 2023.
They need to fund another mediocre buy-up so they can try and rise a spot or two on the ladder, but would have made more revenue off the back of an ex-AFL player than the Derailed Train.
