How about-

Teams play everyone once. The teams you play at home in year one, you play away the next. Your home games you can choose to play them where you want, whether it be your home ground, Darwin or London. Spread 17 games over 22 or so weeks, allow bigger breaks between games (that the players are asking for), which ensures teams have the best opportunity of getting their best players on the park each week for games. Also allows the tv networks to schedule games on Thursdays through to Monday, which is what they want(stand alone games in prime time).

Even fixture - tick
Tv networks happy - tick
Quality product- tick

3x6 divisions.... play division rivals twice, other rivals once = magic 22.
3 division winners and best non division winner are 1st-4th, next best 4 regardless of division are 5th-8th
If 4th beats 1st in the Qualifying Final, they play their Prelim as the away side if against 2nd/3rd.

But too much sooking about how American it is will never appease all the cry babies on here.

Dumb. Make all the non-Victorian teams travel all around Australia for the final 5 games, while the Victorian teams get to stay in their home state and be more fresh for finals.

Are you sure you're a Port Adelaide fan?

"Games between Victorian and non-Victorian teams would happen between, and including, Rounds 14 and 23."

Port would travel as far as Melbourne for the last 10 rounds...

But teams would have 2 to 3 fewer home games each season! I took 22-game season to be set on stone...

I like it, but that is the reason why I tried something different. I went all 'old-VFL' in the proposal above, since Victorian teams draw well against each other.

I think we should play each team once between round 1-17.
Round 18 have a rivalry round which you play each year.
Rounds 19-22 play the remaining 16 teams which is not your rival team (4 different teams each year) on a 4 year rotating basis.

So over 8 years you play your rival team 16 times, and the other 16 teams 10 times with equal amount of Home and away games.

To be fair, the 5 double up games don't have to all happen consecutively at the end of the year, they can be spread throughout the season.

But I agree, if the Victorian teams each have every single one of their double up games against other Victorian teams does create massive issue regarding the advantage that they would all have re travel over the non-Victorian teams. All Victorian teams would travel 4 times a 22 game season, which is ridiculous when almost half the league is outside Victoria.

They already have the advantage. I am not sure my proposal or the opposite of it (doubling up against non-Vic teams) would change that much.

The afl needs to stick at 22 I feel
And the other key they need is to have the fixtures locked in before the season starts. No 17 games then Figure out the logistics. Stuffs over the fans. i can just see round 18 crowds being deplorable under the stupid 17-5 system where they're splitting up teams after rd 17. Fans gonna travel interstate on 1-2 weeks notice for a nothing game? Or even a decent games with already inflated plane tickets?

Anyway
There's some very workable fixture proposals based off a 22 game season.
I have two of my own
1 is fairer but lose Tied in blockbusters
Another tries to maintain the flexibility to give us blockbusters but we lose full equality
It's better than the current system but we'll get complaining when one team unexpectedly drops (ie. hawthorn this year) and some people will feel a rival has an easier draw

We could make quite a fair fixture in 25 games too, but now we have uneven number of games.
And don't tell me 'flip games so one year is 13 home, the next 12' clubs will freeze membership prices the year they have 12 then pop it up 10% the next year because "there's one more gAme"

Also, another aspect I don't like
I don't like being forced to play non Victorian teams twice. Adelaide has a minor rivalry vs the bulldogs. I'd rather play them twice then freo Brisbane Gold Coast gws and even west coast.

Also
You have logistical problems.
By having all vic vs vic in the first 14 rounds, you have 5 games instate every week. To give the lesser teams games at the g you're moving decent sized games to Etihad, costing crowds there.

Alright so you blokes lay off the OP, GP is a newish Port supporter from Brazil (screw China, let's play in Rio!), and is into soccer.

It's been pointed out a lot from people overseas who watch soccer that our fixture is ****ed and GP is one of those people. Personally I'm in favour of a round-robin 34 game home and away season for fairness but I know for a fact that it will never happen due to a multitude of reasons.

18 does not go into 22

Play every once & that does not give an even H&A no.

Two alternatives

As suggested play every once + one return match against your local rival

Or add Tasmania , 19 teams play everyone once 9 home / 9 away !! Done

I would like to see a floating fixture to some extent, so you know who you are playing in round 10 but not when.

This would allow the AFL to fixture the best games on Friday, Saturday night. You could do this 1 month before the game which should allow everyone to book their holidays in time.

Double round-robin is overrated!
