According to the SMH, it's going to 'rock' the competition

http://www.smh.com.au/news/league/doping-scandal-on-league-horizon/2006/08/22/1156012543038.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1

AN NRL player is understood to be facing a charge of using performance-enhancing drugs after a landmark investigation by the newly formed Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

It is understood the breach of the sport's drug rules resulted from a long and comprehensive investigation and not from a positive test from a sample provided by a player.

A host of NRL clubs have reported a sudden spike in the arrival of testers in the past month, including Penrith, Cronulla, St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers, the Bulldogs and South Sydney.
Interesting times ahead. It's good that this is (hopefully) going to be sorted before the finals.

Positively no NRL players

August 23, 2006

ANTI-doping authorities said today they have ramped up their campaign against doping in rugby league but have found no positive tests among NRL players.

This follows a Sydney newspaper report today that claims the newly-formed Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) picked up a breach of the sport's drug rules, not from a sample but after a comprehensive investigation. It does not name the player involved.

But ASADA said it has conducted a number of initiatives in partnership with the game's administrators in recent weeks, and NRL clubs have reported an increased number of dope tests in the lead-up to the finals series.

"ASADA can confirm that the current anti-doping initiatives have not revealed any National Rugby League player testing positive to anabolic steroids, EPO, human growth hormones or stimulants," the organisation said in a statement.

"These initiatives are designed to deter any athlete who may be contemplating doping or catch any athlete who may be involved in doping," ASADA chairman Richard Ings said.

"Any athlete or athlete support personnel involved in using prohibited substances in any sport needs to know that at no stage in Australian sporting history have they stood a greater chance of being detected and sanctioned.

"ASADA is stepping up their investigations in all Australian sports."

ASADA, set up earlier this year by the federal government, has wide powers of investigation, including data-sharing agreements with police, customs and other government bodies.

Yeah I just heard that myself on 7 news. Wasn't he at the Storm for a few years as well?
Yeah he was.

Good to see that the cowboys did the right thing and sack him as well.

NRL star tests positive to cocaine

By James Hooper

August 24, 2006 03:15pm
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

NORTH Queensland Cowboys prop Mitchell Sargent has been sacked from the NRL club after returning a positive test to cocaine.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Sargent returned a positive in-house test to the recreational drug earlier this month.

The Cowboys have torn up Sargent’s contract and his future in the NRL remains unclear.

The Country Origin prop’s future remains unclear with the NRL expected to impose the mandatory two-year ban on Sargent.

The NRL has been informed of the positive drug test and a spokesman said the Cowboys would issue a press release later today.

Sargent is the first NRL player since’s Manly’s Andrew Walker in 2004 to test positive to a recreational drug.

The positive drug test is the latest drama for the Cowboys who have slipped from grand finalists last year to missing the cut for the top eight in 2006.

Talk about being news corp doing a huge backflip in 24 hours. Really made themselves look like the tools that they are.

Otherwise it was nicely handled by the club. Quick, easy, enforcement of the player's contract being terminated.

I loved big Mitch when he was at the Storm, certainly didn't kick on as planned when he moved to the Cowgirls. Now that his stocks are at an all-time low, I wouldn't mind us giving him another go. He sure can play.

It's great the Cowboys show strong leadership.... i wonder if other clubs, in the various codes of football in Oz, would do the same??

I think their are 3 AFL clubs who have not shown any leadership, ethics or morals in dealing with cocaine.

In the AFL he would have been on warning 1 of 3...

Yep the media dont mind giving it to league, you'd think the NRL being half owned by News would protect its asset...

The NRl and Cowboys have shown strong leadership in their code wit their decision.
The AFL is remiss on allowing players totest positive to banned substances and get away with it.
