A fair amount of gaming in this weekend. Saturday games meet played Azul (had only done once before), Broom Service - a combination worker placement / card selection game where you are acting as medieval witches, herb gatherers and druids to make and deliver magic potions. Lastly a quick game of SOS Dino of save the Dinos from being wiped out by volcanos. A simple game have played before, but we wanted something simple at the end of the day.

Then first run of The Isle of Cats by the wife and I. My weekend for the wins, getting them for all the non-co op games. Which usually means will lose them all the next time played. Splitting our wins around 50-50 for most games tends to keep both of us from getting frustrated 😂

Played Welcome To and Welcome To New Vegas, back-to-back. Previously, I'd only played a couple of games of the former and none of the latter. I like WT. Good puzzle where early decisions often come back later to bite you in the butt. WTNV seemed overly complex ... or maybe just more complex than I prefer. This made what was already a somewhat 'busy' play sheet even busier. So much going on it was difficult to differentiate between the different casino types, especially once things had been crossed out/circled/etc. I'd love to know if someone has created a simplified version of the play sheet (for either game).

I agree with your thoughts on WTNV. Have played WT a few times and have enjoyed it every time, win or lose. It's got some strategy, but it's not overly complex. WTNV just seemed to add complexity without any game play or thematic reason, except to make it harder. Not one I plan to go back to, but still want to try out the different sheets (winter, zombie etc.) for WT.

Out last night with our gaming friends, checking out The Lost Dice at their new location in Adelaide. First up Fireball Island.

To be honest disappointed with it. The game was ok, but for a remake made now the plastic looked cheap and nasty. That 80’s bit of it didn't work. There's capturing the feel of the original, yet there's also taking advantage of what's happened since to allow it to be improved. This missed the mark. It’s come off my list of games I want to buy. I’m hoping the high quality Return to Dark Tower progress photos (both games by Restoration games) is reflective of a better product when that arrives later in the year.

The other game we played was Mariposas. Butterfly migration game by the creator of Wingspan. A meh game for me. I enjoy Wingspan and if one of our friends didn’t already have would have gotten by now. This a pass. Despite two average games (and now at least won’t waste my own money on), it was still a good night.

The shop part downstairs has a fairly small collection, not as big as Games World. The gaming area is ok, but their old location (Blackwood) it wasn't really sit down gaming, so their collections of games is fairly small at present (I'd expect it will grow. Mariposas for instance we were the first to play, unwrapping a new game). Worth a try out now, but also should be better in 6-12 months time if they keep adding games to play to their library.

They got a write up in indaily explaining a bit more

Solo games night. Brand new game that was a PnP and now has a cool officially published game. It’s a space invaders, Independence Day type of theme with dice rolling/placement/ mitigation driving it along.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Lost the first mission, but realised I was playing a few rules wrong in the game‘s favour so will try again this weekend!

A couple of games in the cool, out of today’s heat. Firstly story 2 of London Dread. Second try at it, but probably a year since tried it.

This time a success for the wife and I. Will not leave it another year before trying story 3 (of 4).

Then this evening Scenario 2 (second of five tutorial scenarios introducing additional rules in each) of Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion with wife and eldest child. Scenario completed.

Played “Undaunted: North Africa’ and absolutely loved it. The deck building mechanism is terrific, and a surprise for me given it’s not normally something I enjoy. Going to smash out a lot more of this game over the next few weeks.

‘Tinderblocks” was a little dexterity, cube stacking game we played. Was OK. Good filler and party game I imagine.

The other week we had a seven player game of Battlestar Galactica with the Daybreak expansion to bring us to 7 players. It took some number of hours as we keep forgetting how to play.

I have two more expansions still in shrink wrap, but seeing them for sale at $400 a pop online I left them at home. I probably won't sell them but it was a bit too much to break either of them open. One day.

Then last night we played Broadside: Empires of Steel, a game a friend backed on Kickstarter. Print and play, with resin 3D printed boats. I managed to stab my finger down on top of one of the ships and break off some guns, which got me the frowning of a lifetime.

We played an escort game with an ocean liner that the Americans had to escort off the board. It didn't make it.

We (Ze Germans) won, 512 points to 200.

The Allies hardly had a chance after you knocked out their turrets!

No - it was my own gun I broke off! I have a bit of a blind spot on the lower right of my right eye. I’m always bumping stuff and knocking over drinks if they’re low and to the right.

Started a weekend of games with:

Trekking The World, got smashed as I tend to do in these style of games. The ones with contract fulfilment type card draft8ng for points. I plug away on my own game, think I’ve done OK but then realise others have snagged a heap of higher value cards, or I over estimated the benefit of bonus points etc.

Gods Love Dinosaurs. 3 player game scored 22,21,20 which is as close as it gets! Tom Vasel was a bit “meh” in his review, he undersold it IMO. It’s light, but the mechanism and hierarchy of Dinosaurs >Predators> Prey is cool.

tonight we will play:

Trick Shot, a KS dice rolling, ice hockey game
Marvel United
Azul Summer Pavilion

on the weekend i played Battletech (getting excited for Wave 2 of the kickstarter) with 2 friends. it was 4 vs 4 mechs, i had 4 and they had 2 each.
Was planning a couple of games but forgot how long this game takes - 7 hours for a single game! My mechs had 1/2 the BV of the other team so i had much faster jumpier mechs - it took a while for them to get hits.

A couple of house rules we played with that actually helped it go faster:
* instead of rolling for initiative for the mechs we had a deck of playing cards. Each mech had 2 playing cards, a red and black with the same value (eg 4 of clubs and 4 of hearts) we put the black card with our mech sheet and the red cards all were shuffled together and then drawn in order as initiative each turn. Worked well at randomising this and also cut back on thinking time!
* we used different coloured dice for walk (blue), run (black), jump (red) and set the dice to whatever the modifier was. (so if my mech ran 6 hexes i'd set the dice to black with 2 - then when i shot i knew i'd have a +2 modifier to hit and i'd adjust it further based on how far the target moved and then any other variables)
* after initiative turn was done we then took the red cards for our mechs and dropped them onto the mech sheet that we were going to be attacking. then we just took turns shooting (okay my mech 7* is getting shot by 4* and ace*.) Then you'd just take each card away once the mech was done shooting. Or leave it if there was going to be physical attacks.

Loved Battletech back in the 80s. Have you played the PC game by chance? Not bad.

ive played battletech games on PC since the crescent hawks inception :)
I still remember how blown away i was by the Mechwarrior 2 intro scene.
Somebody upscaled the intros on youtube to 4k

the HBS battletech game was good - i play with a mod called Roguetech which adds so much to it.

never played MW5 though.

Bit of an exciting time the last couple of weekends.

First up a day of Twilight Imperium 4.

I came second on 9 points - bad luck on the level II public goals cards but the winner is a really good player and made the most of his early strategy cards though he was locked out of the ones he wanted.

I was pegged back with attacks when it looked like I would win.

The winner (red) retreated to protect his home world and the final two point public goal went to him automatically.

Then we had a “games night” with friends that just turned into one game of Don’t Get Got and a lot of drinking while the kids played Nintendo.

I am sure I am missing a game...

Anyway, this weekend we had Wingspan (second on 75 to winner on 76) and Epic Spell Wars where I was convincingly trounced.
