On the weekend I played...

Drakon - quick and easy game where you play one of 6 characters (each with a different ability) and steal the dragon's gold. Game really needs 5 or 6 players to work well but is lots of fun.

Citadels - card game where you build districts in your city by selecting different characters each round which have different abilities - sometimes to benefit yourself, sometimes to interfere with others. I really like this game. Only played 2 and 3 player so far. This weekend will be 5 or 6 players.

Quartermaster General - WW2 game where the Axis take on the Allies. Played 3 games. Won the first easily then flogged twice in a row having got simply shocking cards. I really like this game but the luck of the cards do have a big influence.

Thursday night braved the depths of Africa with Ticket to Ride - Africa map. Managed to win by wife selecting ticket to complete when both down to almost all carriages done and I’d done my tickets. So I just completed a long route to get down to enough carriages to trigger end game and hope she didn’t have the ticket already or almost already done. She didn’t so won (and got called some names for doing an obvious move to have her having to take points off 🤪).

Today, only bit over 3 months since my birthday, but finally got to try out Tidal Blades Heroes of Reef, that I got for it. Both of us no clue what we were doing so rulebook and guide continually consulted. We both enjoyed it, so will reset for us to play again now we have some idea on how to play it.

Recently purchased Dominion as I’ve heard lots of good things. And Escape from Atlantis is on my to buy list!

Three games of ‘Shadow Kingdoms of Valeria” and one game each of “Trick Shot” and “Rollercate”

Afew games nights planned this week so fingers crossed for even more to share. We’ll plat TfM, Azul, Dice Command and Nidavellir at least.

Games day Saturday with friends.
First up Welcome To.

Then Just One. Two games of 10 of 13. That bloody elusive perfect 13 still eludes us!

Then onto Flash Point. First time as a five player. Unlike our pathetic four player effort awhile ago, where we lost 4 victims quickly, we succeeded in saving the required seven.

Then the main game of Age of Empires III. Too long since played (one of my favourites). When the hostess offered this as one of the 5 player games she has (as one more than our usual 4 yesterday), I jumped to put my vote for it. I'll be very un-PC and take pride in the Dutch conquering the new world, for a narrow victory.

Lastly some Similo. Some with combined sets, some alone.

A public holiday demands a game. The first run of Now or Never. Just normal mode. We’ll give it another couple of goes of this, before doing the Six chapter campaign mode.

65 each. First thoughts is I prefer to Near and Far. The lack of locations blocked by another player, like occurs in Near and Far, has removed the regular frustration that mechanism causes.

Played a bit of Betrayal on the weekend - good fun, except one haunt sucked a bit as it started early-ish and one of the rules was that we weren't allowed to to take any more cards. Boo.

Gave Codenames a go too for the first time. This is really good, easy to learn. A bit dangerous if players are stoned and make some pretty out-there connections between words that obviously make sense to them, but ....

I've gone off Codenames somewhat, mainly due to the large amount of downtime that usually crops up while the cluemasters are trying to come up with a clue.

Cross Clues is a good alternative, albeit fully co-op rather than team vs team.

We’ve seen a few times World of Warcraft the board game on one of our friends shelves. He’s had for 10 years (gotten second hand) and hadn’t played. So finally brought down for a 3v3 of The Alliance v The Hoard. Played as a Tauren hunter, part of the winning hoard. The game takes too long for what it is, even given how much consulting rules we did. 4 hours, probably 3 if played again. Too much downtime between turns and really doesn’t change enough as you level up to keep it interesting. Will not be playing again.

Some Unfair on the weekend. First a 3 player with wife and eldest, then a 2 player just wife and I.

Did some minor attacking each other, but agreed we’ll go all out against each other and everyone else when get to a 4 or 5 player game. Won both games, making up for a narrow loss the Friday night of Lost Ruins of Arnak (using the harder Snake Temple side).

We all enjoyed Unfair, so next time will try with expansion and will get the second expansion coming out for it.

Lost Ruins of Arnak we both prefer the normal side of the board. Next run of that to add in the expansion.

Did some tidying up ready for a weekend of gaming. New shelfie system

Got another cupboard and shelf down stairs with smaller box games and play mats and accessories.

plan to play 6 BIMMT, The king is Dead, Juicy Fruits, The Grizzled, Marvel United, Cartographers Heroes, Shadow Kingd9ms of Valeria, and Long Shot this weekend.

Return to Dark Tower arrived this week and first game tonight with wife and eldest child.

A balanced party helped for a hard fought victory. Eldest had character / cards that were excellent for cleansing skulls, allowing wife and I to tackle foes. The tension is there each time you drop a skull in or the tower rotates or a door is removed.

We all enjoyed it. Just wish I had skills to paint the minis (got the mini expansion, so not just cardboard tokens laid down on the board).

Played Dead Reckoning with my game buddies on Good Friday. First take on the game is very positive from all. Really interesting mechanics including crew development using transparent cards you sleeve over the original crew stats. The battle mech is also great. The game could be a Top 5er for me.

Plenty of gaming this weekend. Friday night Gloomhaven - Forgotten circles for the wife and I. We then gave Paint the Roses a play for the first time Saturday. Then today friends over for 4 player games of Return to Dark Tower (lost when wife gained a 3rd corruption) and Creature Comforts.

What did you think of Paint The Roses?

I just received my copy, will play this weekend.
Not bad as a 2 player. As each turn you have a player place a tile and then all other players place clues, before one player makes a guess, it would be better at higher player count though I think. You’d have extra turns to build clues for players cards before you have to guess. Two player we had one game just won and one game lost. We did have plans to play 4 player Sunday, but 4 player Creature Comforts took a lot longer then expected.
