Super Tottenham....from the Lane.
He had a very good game today.

Cost us bugger all in trade and Pies are paying a chunk of his salary.

They should be paying all his salary and a fee to us on top.

His game today was about average. The fact that it is his best performance all season is disappointing.

Youre so used to us losing and being miserable you forgot we won?

23 possies and a goal. Seems like reasonable work for a wing.

Watched the Collingwood vs Essendon game, Steele Sidebottom really has gone rapidly downhill. Still able to find a bit of the ball, but butchered it almost every time. Surely the Pies have someone pushing for a spot in the midfield that has better foot skills.

You make it sound like he was ever really that good. About as overrated as Dane Swan.

Yeah saw him cost the game vs Brisbane from memory with a few turnovers.

Past it.

There should be a separate thread for players who are still good on the surface but it’s empty and they no longer having the impact they used to.

Sidebottom is a classic example: 30 disposals, 17 contested possessions, 12 tackles, 6 inside 50s is, on paper, a wonderful game for a midfielder. 50% disposal efficiency and 8 changers? Yikes. It’s not ‘one year too many’ territory - he’s only 30 and might have 3 more years in him - but he isn’t the guy he was anymore (and that’s ok).

I’d put Sam Docherty in that category, sadly. All the numbers are there - vs Brisbane 28 disposals @ 92% with only 2 changers. Aand yet, he is in the 20h percentile or similar or 1 percenters for small/medium defenders and gets torched by almost any opponent in 1 on 1s, and his kicks lack hurt factor (despite the apparent’effecveness’). He used to be Mr Reliable but has dropped 3 chest marks with zero pressure that have cost goals in two weeks.Essentially he’s ‘back’ but missing the edge that made him a standout

Docherty had a shocker on the weekend. As you say, the stats don't show the fumbles, lost footing and poor positioning.

I think Marc Murphy owns this thread this year. Genuinely not in Carlton's best 22 anymore and is being carried to 300 games.

Murphy’s an interesting case.

He’s not in our best 22, but they aren’t available - Martin, Fisher, Silvagni and Curnow would all be ahead as forwards but are injured.

He’s playing HFF with a bit of wing and is providing ok output: 19 disposals and 2 goals vs Brisbane. His AFL.com colour coded profile tells the story - above average in a range of areas and contributing in the scoreboard but below in tackling, pressure, etc.

But you can carry a player in the forward line, and if you have to then getting him to 300 sits ok with me (after that the other forwards will be back, some of the kids in the 2s might start stepping up, etc) and if his name was Murphy Marcson and he had those stats it would be ok. Problem is we are also carrying Casboult (injured) and Betts (definitely past it) who are also both poor in the areas Murphy is poor. Plus McKay who is excellent in the air but also poor on the ground and... well sometimes poor Michael Gibbons is the only bloke actually tackling...

Had a shocker the week before too, would've been three or four Port goals that were a direct result of Docherty clangers. Pity, he was a star before the injuries.

Can a 23 year old qualify for this thread?

On the contrary, some plaudits for career revivals and survivals this year:

Tex Walker - obvious, 2nd in the Coleman, great field kicking and pressure too

Grant Birchall - not just up in Brisbane sitting back, he's well and truly earning his cheque

Cale Hooker - his 2nd best goalkicking year ever already, on track to be his best ever, =5th in the Coleman and helping Wright and Jones out massively

Jesse Hogan - why I thought to post it. Still a lot of water under the bridge but he's back playing and both his games have been good

Tom McDonald - not a retire option, but gone from trade table at the end of 2020 to key player in the top side

Tom Hickey - AA ruck case for him
