Irregardless if he ever makes it back this is exactly what the shield needs blokes coming back from test level and performing to a high standard

Yeah true although he probably get out for a duck in his next innings given his form.

Great point, probably not good enough for test cricket, but a guy like Burns making runs consistently should improve the standard of Shield cricket, whihc frankly isn't good enough at the moment.

When Australian cricket was at its strongest there were guys playing who were too good for shield cricket but not good enough for test cricket such as Jamie Siddons, Jamie Cox and Jimmy Maher as some examples.

Exactly this is why I am so against what Victoria has done by moving on Maxy Finch and Siddle to make way for the kids. The kids should have to force them out of the side

Um, Moises has 12 FC tons (2 this summer) and 2 FC 5 wicket hauls...
Well that just goes to show how stuffed the stats online are. I did check before posting so I will take that back. Frankly I was stunned when I saw the "stats". Nic Maddinson in his ACB stats has only ever played BBL so I should have been a bit smarter.

Just watched the highlights of Burns’ innings.

I guess credit where credits due but geez some of the boundaries he hit was off some very average bowling (half vollies, waist high bouncers, wide and short etc.). Nice looking shots though.

You will all be happy to know that Burns is 127no at the minute at Bellerive.

On a positive note Caleb Jewell made a maiden first class ton. Has anyone seen him play before? Is only 23.

Sorry, just checked again, and is still only 21.
One of those guys that looks pretty good but hasnt made runs ( think his record is very ordinary)
Has some ability though and our batting stocks are thin . Worth keeping an eye on over the next 12-18 months imo

I presume you are talking about Jewell?

He is only young, so certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Highlights from Caleb Jewell century from the first innings against Queensland for anyone interested.

Is it me though or does Jewell's batting style & technique a lot similar to how Travis Head goes about his batting.

Who cares what he did average that’s history now. Recent history suggests he is struggling for runs. He doesn’t want to open the batting that is evident with the fact that he bats himself at 4 in the shield.
Why on earth would you move Pucovski down the order? He has always been a top order player did well on debut and should hopefully only improve. Why move him to a role he is uncomfortable in to bring Khawaja back?

Patterson has failed again yesterday, he is still 28 so there is time for him to turn it around but since he lost his spot he has not once put his hand up for selection.

Why pick blokes like Patterson and Khawaja who are out of form at Shield level? I have nothing against either of them playing again but you simply can not pick either player of their recent form

Swepson is clearly the best spinner behind Gaz was the stand out bowler in the shield

The only reason Usman is batting at 4 is so Street (young opener) can open with Burns (who was the Aus incumbent opener) and so Labuschagne can bat 3 for Qld.

I'd play Pukovski down the order because he's still only 23 and it gives him a chance to learn his game. Up until this Shield season he batted at #3 in domestic. They did exactly the same thing with guys like Ponting/Boon/Chappell/Chappell/HarveyBradman back in the day, who were also a top order bats. Batting at 5 and 6 gives you a chance to ease into the team without facing opening bowlers with a new rock every innings. It isn't rocket science.

On Khawaja and Patterson, form is largely a crock. They are both clearly better batsmen than Head, Burns and Wade, and you're kidding if you think otherwise. Maddinson is also better than those three. I'd also take Henriques and old Shaun Marsh over them.

As I said, happy to concede on Swepson, who I haven't seen much of tbh.

Form is relevant Khawaja couldn’t hit it of the square when he was last in the side he has gone back to FC cricket and still can’t. If you expect anything but mediocrity from him you are kidding yourself also he turns 35 next summer so the chances of him turning it around are slim.

Patterson I haven’t seen too much of him when he was in form outside the tour game and his test 100. I am by no means writing him off but he needs runs otherwise you are setting him up to fail

Taylor, Graeme Smith and Joe Root have all started out their careers and established themselves up the top. You don’t need to move Pucovski especially for a washed up Usman

You talk about Ponting starting at 6 that’s because he came into a side with a settled top order. His option was bat 6 or bat 3 for Tassie

Pucovski is coming into a batting line up with two/three genuine locks and that being Labuschange and Smith then Warner depending on what he does.

The resemblance is uncanny. Great call. Maybe plays slightly straighter in general and uses a slightly straighter bat when cover driving (Head's is more like a square drive that happens to go through the covers) but other than that it's almost identical. The flourish of the wrists in the follow through you would swear is actually Head.

Ollie Pope is sort of the right handed version of this too.

There are some similarities, which is not a good sign. Head has other problems on top of his technique, namely a lack of concentration. Hopefully Jewell won't have the same issues.

It just shows the carrying Cummins has been doing recently, the NSW bowling attack is essentially the Australian one minus Cummins and they're getting picked apart by the Vics
They bowled them out for 200 and have them 3/81 in the 2nd innings. It's hardly been the bowlers that have been NSWs issue.

And Hazlewood took 17 wickets @ 19 in the India series.

Lyon is the only test bowler that has taken 10 of the 14 wickets for NSW to date in this match. Neither Starc nor Hazlewood have taken a wicket in this match to date. Starc has also gone at 5 an over in the first innings and 4.5 and over to date in the second innings. That is a worry.
