Next two tests are pretty big for him . If he doesn't have much impact its then been a very long dry spell.

I think he will bounce back but another failure first up and the pressure will really be on.

Can't agree there - if ever I've seen an Aussie player with credits in the bank, it's Smith - even with the cheating stuff in the bank alongside the runs. And exactly who should come in for him considering none of the other current test batting line-up can claim to be in good form either?

Never said his spot was in trouble , just more pressure on him IF he doesn't turn the tide around from a runs perspective.
He has set a very high bar to maintain

Dont know if this has been mentioned but if Pucovski comes in, why not put him at number 5 instead of Head. Would be less chance of getting hit in the head due to the older ball
It is not a terrible idea but it still leaves Wade batting out of position and you would hope the middle order will be exposed to a second new ball anyway.

At the end of the day you can not protect someone in test cricket. He is fit and ready or he shouldn't be picked.

He can be fit sure. But there are higher chances of being hit with a brand new ball every single innings. He can play any position and realisitcally, new players are usually positioned at number 6. Yes, middle order should be having a brand new ball as well but bwolers will not be as fresh. Just hope he plays but doesnt get hit. Would almost think a few more concussions and career is over

I agree, if he plays he opens.

Would be ideal for Pucovski maybe, but Australia is desperate for an opener. Don't think we can afford to select an opener but ease him in at the moment.

A lot of batsmen have succeeded in batting positions that were ‘out of position’ when they were first picked there.

For years the Australian cricket team (Steve Waugh/Ricky Ponting era) picked the least experienced batsman in the team at six. If that’s not protecting players at test level I don’t know what is.

It should be remembered that Pucovski has had plenty of success outside opening positions.

Averaged 50 in his most recent stint as no 5 over 7 tests
Given Head's form, If both Puc and Warner come in Wade is almost certain to get a chance to defend his middle order position, which I think he deserves. But that's all Wade has earned - it's delusional to think he has secured that spot for anything more than a handful of tests.

No serious cricket selector is caring about the difference between a batsmen's average at 5 compared to their average at 6.

Still won’t be shocked if Wade goes the minute he doesn’t contribute too.

He's 33, batting average 31. It's hard to see him building up a career that ensures him selection for any more than a handful of tests at a time. That's not to say he can't play another 30 or 40 tests. He certainly can but his place in the team is going to remain very much on a "must be performing now" basis.

Yep pretty much he’s basically there to do a half decent job in the interim till we have a better option that’s it

After watching a stellar performance with the bat by Alex Carey last night I would be considering taking him on the South African tour as a reserve batsmen.
Christ. You shouldn't base T20I's as a reason to take someone on tour, let alone Australia's pretty bad domestic T20's

He has played 42 One-Day internationals for Australia and is averaging 36.36. He can clearly bat at international level and is a better bat than Wade or Head.
In short form cricket, sure. But why not use Wade's 80-odd against India as why he should be in the side? Because it's not quite as stupid but still stupid. I mean the last couple of players selected with good ODI records but average FC records worked so well with George Bailey (averaged 26 with one fifty from 5 tests) and Aaron Finch (averaged 27 with 2 fifties from 5 tests) worked so well for Australia, they should definitely do that again.

The whole problem at the moment as I have mentioned before is the only form we can judge players on outside the test group is BBC.Surely at least 1 shield game for each state plus a 3/4 day Australia A game v India or who ever is the ideal way to go.Perhaps covid has made the scheduling difficult but lets hope they can do it better next season.

And just adding to that post I see in February we are playing 3 tests in South Africa plus another Australian team will be playing T20 games in NZ and surely they will need Carey for NZ and the T20.
