Ongoing Test match XI speculation thread.

Both fair posts.

I see him as the cricket equivalent of a Ryan Murphy. Just not cut out for it at the next level long term.

In spite of my complaints he’s the logical selection for the next Test. I just want him out as soon as Puck is back, which I’m sure will be the case.

yeah fair enough

I love would rather will back as well but IMO I see will long term as a middle order player rather than an opener

its not all doom and gloom Warner still has a few years left plus you have whiteman having a good season as an opener burns still has a future usman can open plus we have will and Harris opening this test

heaps of options stay positive :)

Haha I will try, I just can't see Whiteman as a opener for me and Burns just seems like he belongs in the middle order in the way he plays. I did forget about Khawaja though but given the fact he didn't get this series suggests to me that it will be a long road back for Khawaja if he wants to open for Australia again in the test arena.

But hey, at least Shaun Marsh can help open til his 50 the way he is batting lately so anything is possible these days :tearsofjoy:

I think Pucovski will be a career opener for us but his body is just so bloody fragile. Maybe give him a spot in the slips so he doesn’t throw his shoulder out. We could really do with Carey in the team as much for his leadership qualities as for his batting. Give him a spot as a specialist batsman in Wades spot and let Inglis take the gloves when Paine calls it quits. Long term I can see something like this eventuate with Harris and Head on the fringes

Absolutely laughable that Paine's mate Wade keeps his spot. One of the more undeserving selections in the last five years and we have had a fair few of those. The guys gets out playing stupid shots, doesn't value his wicket, can't make many runs and even when he does he can't convert into a big score.

I am not a huge fan of Harris but not against him coming in. Tough for him given his lack of actual match practice.

Having said that I feel this test just about everyone will get runs against a weakened attack which I think will give some a false impression of where we are at.
I wouldn't say he was 'undeserving' of his selection over the past couple of years. Went back to Shield and was consistently one of the top scorers in recent years where others weren't.

- 2nd highest run scorer in Shield 2018/2019 @ over 60 - 2 centuries, 8 fifties
- Averaged 55 with 3 centuries in Shield 2017/2018
- Our 3rd best performing batsman in the Ashes behind Smith and Labuschagne with 2 centuries.

Wade was probably going to miss this series had Pucovski not been injured before the series started. Selectors obviously keen on Green. He was then asked to then move up and open against a very decent Indian attack.

Obviously a couple of dismissals this series when he has gone to attack have been unacceptable. I think most realise the sun is setting on Wade's test career very shortly if not after this test if he fails here. A fully healthy side would probably mean he misses or very close to. But the way he has gone back and performed in the Shield and some performances for Australia recently have been fairly admirable.

Not sure if it was day 4 or early on day 5 of the Sydney test (obviously before Pucovski went off injured, and don't think it was from the first innings), but the commentators discussed one passage of play where Pucovski was out on the boundary, threw the ball in but his throwing action didn't look right and they were even questioning if he was having some shoulder problems at that stage, especially with the way he was walking back to his fielding position

I didn't really hear much more about it after they briefly discussed it, but wondering if he already had some other issue and maybe isn't suited to the outfield in the first place - but also not sure what he's like as a closer in fielder

Do we know where he normally fields for Vic?

Yeah Langer says he was going for scans at the end if the day anyway.

Not sure where he fields for Victoria but he took a couple of sharp catches in the point/ gully area for Australia A. We can’t have him throwing himself around anywhere in the field or even stationed around the bat incase he cops one in the head so really he might be our first slip fielder if they need to manage his body. He’s going to be an awkward case

I think if Head can conquer his spot in the test XI and score a mountain of runs, he will become the captain of the Test team no matter what given his experience and ability with South Australia.

I think by 2025, this would be the lineup that would best represent Australia, ability wise in the Test Arena:

Pucovski (28)
Whiteman (33)
Labuschange (32)
Head (C) (33)
Phllipee (WK) (28)
Green (26)
Carey (VC) (34)
Cummins (32)
Richardson (Jhye) (29)
Pope (26)
Hazlewood (35)

Pope Lol!

In the words of Jonny McEnroe...”you can’t be serious”

Swepson then Tanveer Sangha.

Depends who's there but mostly Gully

What happened to Jason Sangha? He was supposed to be one of the next big things.

I think Sangha still has a future with the Australian Set Up don't get me wrong.

Tbh, he probably bats at 4 to 6 when Head or Carey retires in the future.

Head can bring in the winning South Australia shield team culture.

I’d have Phillpee, Pope out with Inglis, Sweepson in and Carey captaining but not much different

I know he is only 34 but I still think Warner will go sooner than we think. I think he is the type of player that is either in really good form or really out of form.

As I said in another thread he will want the one hundred test milestone but I could see him getting a few niggling injuries and perhaps calling retirement to spend more time with his family as soon as in 12 months time.

Haha exactly ;)

Winning 0 of the matches and become Australia's greatest captain ever.

What a role model :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

The only other option is Cummins or Pucovski but IDK about those two

Agree with your comments about Warner, might focus on T20 and even 1 day cricket.

2 South Australians occupying the captain and vice captain positions. Hmm. Which one are you, Travis or Alex?

Sadly that's what I am thinking too given repeated injuries can happen anytime. That's why we need to start developing quality openers now for Australia in case he does indeed retire earlier then expected cause Father Time might happen for David Warner quicker then most want him too.

I'm actually Jason Gillespie behind the screen champ :tearsofjoy: ;)

Harris was Pucovski's opening partner for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield earlier this season and the pair shared a record-breaking stand of 486 against South Africa with Harris making 239. He followed that with scores of 71 and 45 against West Australia then made 35, 25 not out, 26 and 5 for Australia A in the two warm-up matches.

Someone will emerge, Paine came from not playing to Captain within 6 months. If Paine goes after the Ashes i think Cummins is favourite.
