test squad to be announced today sometime:

for me being so far out from the first test still i'm selecting a 17 man squad:

warner, burns, laauschagne, smith, wade, head, paine, cummins, starc, lyon, hazlewood

plus pucovski, green, neser, abbott, pattinson, swepson

i'd love pucovski to play ahead of burns and green ahead of wade.
I'd expect another batsman ahed of Neser or Abbott.

surely abbott, neser swepson are token selections as a reward for some good performances only and only there as a back up.

surely its only pucovski and green pushing for a spot in the XI.

why do they need an extra batsman and if so who ? its not as if we are on tour.

besides khawaja & patterson .... s.marsh, handscomb, maddinson, m.marsh, cartwright, maxwell, harris, bancroft, renshaw, finch have all been tried and ave sub 40.

Maddinson's form since joining Victoria deserves a spot ahead of Abbott comfortably. You name a 17 man squad to make sure you have cover, using Maddinson's form 4 years ago is disengenuous at best.

I'm pretty sure the CA media journalists have already been told that Abbott is in the squad. I think cricketnut14 has what the squad will be pretty much spot on.

What is also interesting is that in the Guardian last night they said it is likely that anyone in the Test squad will be training in Adelaide rather than playing the 2nd Aus A tour game. They said test squad players were actually more likely to play in the 1st tour game.

Spot on

Australia Test squad: Tim Paine (c), Sean Abbott, Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Will Pucovski, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade, David Warner

Australia A squad: Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Joe Burns, Jackson Bird, Alex Carey (wk), Harry Conway, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Moises Henriques, Nic Maddinson, Mitchell Marsh (subject to fitness), Michael Neser, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Will Pucovski, Mark Steketee, Will Sutherland, Mitchell Swepson

No complaints with the squad, although I am still not totally convinced about Abbott.

will take alot for abbott to get into the starting XI - again all it is, is reward for his good performances.

surely he aint one of our best 4 bowlers and he certainly aint one of the best 6 batters.

playing him at 7 in no mans land doesnt solve anything if we are playing paine at 6.

Paine at 6 lol

less likely to get injured would be my guess.

I reckon the Squad concept goes back to when they had to take the boat to england. this day and age they can just pick anyone.
Bowlers are more susceptible to injury I guess.

Helps that a likely back up in Burns is capable of batting anywhere from 1 - 6 in the order.
I get that, but with Green bowling again too I don't think they need all three of Neser/Abbott/Pattinson either. If it were an 18 man squad absolutely go with the three reserve fast bowlers but Maddinson has every right to feel aggrieved for me.

Maddo's unlucky that he's been stuck behind Pucovski and Harris so he's been unable to have a decent knock.

Still, it should be irrelevant given his form since moving below the border.

i think based on a Fox Sports story I read earlier, the Australian media has broken its own long-standing record for how early in the summer it has discussed the fabled "possibility of a second spinner in Sydney" in spite of the fact that if you remove Lyon himself taking 2 last summer against NZ, only 3 five-wicket hauls have been claimed there by spinners in the last decade - and one of those was Hauritz taking 5 in an innings Pakistan were convicted of throwing and another was Kaneria taking 5-151 in a demolition by the home batsmen.

Was this ever definitively proven?

I thought that what was alleged to be match-fixing during that Test might have actually been more a case of Hanlon's Razor - don't attribute to malice what could be more easily attributed to Pakistani incompetence.

The spot-fixing scandal was altogether of a different nature to that Test.

TBH I don't know if it ever was I'm going off distant recollection here - but at the time I was distinctly in the "this is Pakistan we are talking about - absolutely this can happen without them doing it deliberately" but seem to recall not long after that match was raised as one that had ties to bookmakers. Maybe I'm just imagining that but I thought that's how it panned out.

Having just checked, there was one guy who accepted a bribe to provide information about that spot-fixing Test (Mazhar Majeed) who claimed it, and others who raised suspicions, but nothing was definitively proven.

My thoughts are that it was indeed possible that spot-fixing took place during that match (not no-balls per se, but that failed Akmal run-out was as dodgy as anything), but that it would be very hard to contrive to throw a Test match away like that without the cooperation of 1) the captain (notably not Salman Butt at the time) and 2) maybe 3-5 other players in the side. Hansie managed to throw away a Test match, but that 1) just involved closing the second innings and 2) required the cooperation of the opposing captain.

I may be mis-remembering this but I seem to recall Hussey skying a catch that basically anyone with arms could complete, before he rescued Australia's innings. Looking back retrospectively in the time after the game when a few murmurs started to come to light, that was the moment that stood out

Like I said, indeed possible, although mitigated by how poor Pakistan's fielding was throughout that series.

It was the failed Akmal run-out which raised the most eyebrows.

Hate to see Paine Ward and Burns batting in the same test. Will leave a lot for Head Smith and Marnus L. to do , not forgetting an inexperienced Pucovski.
