I'd be staggered if they still went Burns, seems like madness.
1) He was the worst performed bat in the last two series
2) The last two series were against teams we were always going to belt on home soil so his middling performance is arguably worse
3) He's been atrocious this season

If they pick him, he'll play the first test before getting dropped IMO

Yep absolute bullshit. If they select Burns over Pucovski after Burns is averaging what 30 in test cricket and 11 this shield season then you might as well give Burns the opener spot for life. Pucovski is averaging what 245 for christ sake

Just imagine if Mitch Marsh is in the squad...

Harris is 28 - with 9 years of cricket ahead of him - premature to think he couldn't yet make it.

I wouldn't have him in the frame at the moment.

Marsh is 37 and his time has come.

It’s getting to the point where some of the players I’m seeing perform at shield level is making me lose faith in the overall standard of the competition. Harris is certainly one of them.

I honestly think I’ve seen enough of him to think it’d be beyond a miracle if he’s ever test standard. Joe Burns has already scored more test hundreds than Harris will ever make - I say that with confidence.

Langer is also the bloke who took over a rabble and retained the ashes in the uk for the first time in nearly 20’years

don’t agree with everything - but he deserves the right to continue building the squad as he sees fit

Key word is retained, some of his selections in the last test were terrible though

Honestly I think Langer has done a decent job but drawing a series with their worst side in at least 15 years isn’t anything to be too excited by.

Having said that we were a freak knock from Stokes and/or a DRS howler away from winning the Ashes. You’d be pretty harsh to blame Langer for that.

rabble? Our best player returned from a stupid ban and averaged 110 for the series. What a masterstroke from Langer.

Langer took over in the worst circumstances in recent history and made Australia competitive again. The team is shaping up nicely. And he doesn’t talk smack about players in public. I think Pucovski will play, he’s just making sure he doesn’t bury Burns on the way out.

Yep, unless Pucovski fails in the A matches and Burns makes runs then there is no way Pucovski doesn't play.

Or no substitution rule away from losing them

Burns arguably isn't even in the best two openers in his state side, bury away.

Sticking fat with out of form players is something that often hinders Australia, if he does like it seems with Burns then we really need him to make a big hundred in a shield game soon for some confidence.

People keep saying this but for every Joe Burns that’s kept in the side there seems to be just as many of the Cam Bancroft or Marcus Harris type who were average shield players who were picked because they were in form at shield level.

Ultimately form is temporary and (lack of) class is permanent and the less talented ‘in form’ player is dropped 2 to 3 games later. It was always strikingly obvious Harris and Bancroft weren’t up to it. Burns can be similar but at least he has actually performed at test level in the past.

I think Pucovski is different but calling for him based off him being ‘in form’ is silly imo. Him being in form is a bonus - nothing more than that. We should pick the best option for the test side long term as ultimately form is temporary.

No one was calling for Marnus Labuschagne at all but the selectors picked him based off potential and nailed it. It’s why they’re paid for doing what they do rather than reading shield scores and assuming that it translates to test level. It often doesn’t.

Then basically it's an easy decision and Pucovski should be selected then.

Just at thought we were getting better letting Warner let's ball tamper to pick his partner and allowing Langer to give burns a gig fu** off

he has already had 11 different partners in test cricket:

Rogers
Burns
Cowan
S.Marsh
P.Hughes
Bancroft
Renshaw
Harris
Khawaja
Watson
Maxwell

*Finch opened when Warner was banned and long time partner in odi/20-20
