Bull sh*t.
Carey has become a gun keeper the past two years. People think that ha had such a poor World Cup he must be a poor keeper. The World Cup was not the norm for him. Paine is keeping his seat warm for him.

I’m more going off the number of errors he’s been making the last couple of games in the big bash! If he can’t keep competently for 20 overs, how will he go for 120?

Was a specialist keeper in all formats for 10+ years. Still more than capable of doing the job in a test match if required.

Wade's a well below average keeper.
Pant is a truly horrible gloveman.

I never said Carey was a quality gloveman, only that I thought Pant was one of the worst test gloveman I’ve ever seen and that Carey was better than him easily.
I agree. He's stil better than Carey.
Paine wasnt regularly keeping at FC level either until Wade gave up the gloves and he slotted back in fine as a keeper..so Wade could do the same short term if needed.
Paine was always a good keeper, it was those finger injuries and his inability to convert scores that kept him back/

Have you actually watched him keep? You're right, carey's WC is not the norm for him. He's usually worse.
What's Wade's batting average since he came in as a specialist batsman?
35 or so

Carey is a horrendous keeper, but very good with the bat, much like Pant. Ideally, Inglis will be the heir apparent to Paine but that doesn't rule Carey out of becoming a specialist middle-order batsman. Hopefully he can play more Shield (he hasn't played much in 2 years but has been very good when he has) with Nielsen taking the gloves.

I recall the hardy days of 2011-12 when Wade was a better keeper than Haddin in the eyes of a very small but loud crew of people....

I think it's exceptionally hard to judge the merits of each different shield keeper in an era when many rounds of shield competition feature all 3 games being played at the same time, and there's not enough acknowledgement of that. I think people should be sceptical of any big claims regarding the strength of keeping skills

Chadd Sayers was delivering it on a platter to him.

Wade broke the record in his first year for Victoria. How does he go?

No one will deny that's an excellent catch but his keeping overall is still substandard, which is frustrating because, given his athleticism, his keeping should be a lot better than it is.

All games not as wicket-keeper : 33
Middle order not as wicket-keeper : 34
As opener : 30.4

Thanks!

I do feel like someone should be knocking down the door with shield runs to take someone's spot, even if they are just doing "okay". What's the point of replacing an okay test player with an okay first class player?

Also where are all of our whily old veterans? I would kill to have a Voges/Ferguson/Bailey to call upon.

At this point our wily old veterans are Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh.

For all of this negativity around Carey, are there stats on dropped catches available? I wonder does he 100% drop more than others, or has he just dropped a few high profile ones and from that gotten a reputation?

I can't remember him being young (and I've been watching cricket since the mid-90s)

Smith, Labuschagne, Cummins & Hazlewood are the only players who are safe right now imo.

Keep playing Green as he has shown some nice signs. Keep Pucovski in until it's clear he needs to be dropped.

Keep Warner in for now. He is clearly playing hurt so he gets a pass this summer. Not enough other players knocking down the door for opening spot too.

The rest need a big spotlight on them. Same goes for the coaching staff.

Agree with the above. Playing 11 looks like this for mine.

?
Pucovski (if fit)
Labs
Smith
?
Green
?
Cummins
Hazlewood
?
?

Bowling:
Patto and either Neser or Swepson have to play the next test that we play, imo. Cannot go into that with Starc and Lyon again. Also, if there isn't a spinner ready to replace Lyon then pick a seamer, I couldn't care less about spin if the bowler isn't good enough, unless the pitch demands it.

Batting:
Has Wade done enough to keep his spot at 5 or does someone else (who?) come in? Warner probably stays as opener but he's getting on, so you'd be looking at someone like Whiteman to replace him.

Keeping:
Inglis, Gotch and Carey could all come in for Paine without much of a drop in performance imo. Carey could also come in as a no. 5 bat but he's played **** all shield recently.

Captaincy:
If Paine goes, who captains?

So many questions and there aren't a lot of obvious answers.

I'd keep Warner, he probably shouldn't have played this series at all.

Warner was clearly still not fit this test so I'd still open with him against SA (the end is near though). Jhye and Swepson for Starc and Lyon, but the middle order is where it's very much up in the air. No one is banging down the door (the best performers in the Shield have been Henriques and McDermott) unless we go back to Head but, even then, he has to work on his technique. Roll the dice with Maxwell or Carey? Needless to say, our batting stocks are the barest I've seen in... probably since I started following cricket. If only Love was around now.

Can't help thinking that four solid months of f/c cricket in the Ranji Shield before packing up for the IPL is a sh*t load more beneficial than breaking the season in two for a second rate T20 tournament..
Yeah, play the big bash across a few weekends in November or Feb and play shield throughout the rest of the summer. It goes for way too long, at the worst time for the test team.

And worse this summer, with the later tests. At least normally the Test squad for the last two games is picked before the BBL starts just before Christmas.
But, yes, on sport and not money the BBL would be played when the WBBL is to start the season and Tests would run through January with the Shield running throughout and later to allow form before any February/March.

But none of that is going to change, the BBL in school holidays is a broadcaster non-negotiable. And structural issues are much deeper than that.

Shield? Pfft, who cares about the Shield, it’s all about picking the gun BBL players for the test side!!!
Give you a tip. All the brightest prospects hardly get a run in the shield these days. The gun shield players are Marcus Harris, Travis Head and Shaun Marsh, so what else are we supposed to pick from?
