Carey keeping in the test side? He's Wade-esque with the gloves, no thanks
Paine's glovework this series was worse than anything Wade did while in the test side I get he is usually very good with them but an alarming performance from him

Aaron Finch is at best on the borderline of Victoria's FC XI, let alone in Australia's.
Paine was on the borderline of Tasmania's FC XI

I don't think Finch's batting is good enough to be a test no 5 though.

Thinking about it a bit more and looking at recent form in the Shield, I'd have Renshaw come in at number 5 in place of Wade, and I'd bring Inglis in as the backup keeper for the South Africa tour. I think Head should stay in the squad as a backup, but Wade should go to NZ. As our first choice white ball keeper, Carey to go to NZ too.

No, it wasn't. He was poor but let's not go OTT

It's a bit different if you're playing for a specialist batting spot.

We’ve got to stop looking at recent form in the shield and just pick the best cricketers. Why would you pick Nic Maddison over Glenn Maxwell? Renshaw over Carey? They’re not as good and won’t cut it. The old theory of picking sides from the shield teams goes out the window when our best cricketers don’t play in the shield.

Nic Maddinson and Glenn Maxwell can both be in the squad. Maddinson has improved his technique significantly and deserves a shot.

Don't think one big score after not being able to buy a run for 2 seasons is going to cut it just yet.

He still has plenty of time to rebuild his career though. It's a little disorientating to think he is only 24 and it's been nearly 3 years since we last saw him in a baggy green.

Another Marcus Harris. Dominates the domestic comp but won’t ever be good enough to take the next step. He proved it again when he played for Australia A a month ago.

Breaking it down for SA:

Openers: David Warner, Will Pucovski, Sam Whiteman
3-7: Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Nic Maddinson, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, Tim Paine
Fast Bowlers: Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson*, Mitchell Starc, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson
Spin Bowlers: Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson

*pending fitness

Pucovski
Warner
Labuschagne
Smith
Maddinson
Green
Paine (+)
Pattinson/Richardson
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

He's thrice as talented as Harris. He had a couple of average innings' against India A, sure, but he certainly has the talent for test cricket.

Is their a law in cricket, a wicket keeper must not play as a specialised batsmen in the Aussie team??
If Carey is averaging 34 in shield, I can see him averaging 40+ as a stand alone batsmen, easily.

yep, should be an unwritten rule.

only gilchrist would have qualified.

surely to hold their own in the top 6 they gotta average at least 35 - if they have no other strings to their bow.

no other aussie keeper other than paine, haddin & phillips have even averaged 30 with the bat and they dont qualify as a top 6 !!

If Renshaw can get back to his early 2018 he'll be well and truly in the conversation again. He looked comfortably in the top 6 batsman in the country during that period for Queensland and Somerset, shame a finger injury ended his county stint early and then the concussion before the UAE tests. I'm backing him to be back in the conversation again over the next 2 or 3 years.

Speaking of Finch & Maxwell -

Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch are unlikely to play red ball cricket for Victoria again.

Foxsports.com.au understands the players – who remain key staples in Australia’s limited overs teams – have had amicable conversations with Cricket Victoria regarding their futures in the longer format.

Though Maxwell and Finch enjoy Sheffield Shield cricket and would ideally like to play when available, both are said to be realistic regarding their prospects of wearing the Baggy Green again and are aware of Victoria’s push to promote young batsmen.

Nothing has been made official at board level, but it’s widely understood Victoria’s selection panel will look elsewhere for runs in the short and medium term, rather than rely on Maxwell and Finch.

Through a combination of their white ball exploits, COVID-19 scheduling and international fixtures, neither right-hander has faced a red ball since late 2019 anyway.

If Carey is averaging 34 in shield

You've caught me in a bad mood, so I apologise in advance.

I am so tired of people talking unresearched CRAP on this forum. Some even say his form in Sheffield Shield this season is poor. Amazing since he hasn't appeared in a single game.

FACT!!!!! Carey has not played in a Shield Shield game since 2019-20 in which he played only 2 games. The year before that, he played only 4 games.

That is 6 games in the past 3 seasons because of being required in the truncated forms of the game. If people actually cared for one moment to take a look, in those 6 games, he has posted THREE centuries and is averaging 60. When you find someone else who is making 100 every second game they've played in the past three years, let me know.

These are FACTS. Not some concocted bullshit to fit the narrative.

If Renshaw can get back to his early 2018 form he will be far better than Carey will ever be.
Who cares about 2018 form. We’re concerned about right now and right now I’d be much more comfortable watching Alex Carey walking out to the crease at 4 down than Wade, Maddison, Renshaw or anyone else going around at the moment.

Right now he is averaging 92 from Qld's first 3 rounds of shield matches

He’s not even in the top 10 list of run scorers this season. Tried to look up his stats for this season but he’s not on any leaderboard I could find. If that average is correct it’s misleading

Qld have only played 3 matches, he's only had 5 and one of them was only for a handful of balls before Qld declared. 48, 8, 40, 168no, 10no from his 5 bats. Certainly not suggesting he should be in the side at this point(he needs to show at least another year of shield/county form), just that your comment of him "not been up to it" is an incredibly premature tag to be putting on a 24yr old that made a test hundred at 20 and 2 50's on his first tour only India. There is also not really anything to back your suggestion that Carey is better red ball player than him other than speculation. Hope to see Carey get a good run of shield matches soon.
