Qualification period is five years isn’t it. He’s just over half way to being eligible and would be 38 by the time he does.

Either way I’m not sure he’d be able to bowl enough overs for test cricket in his mid 30s. That’s if he was even better than one of our test quicks, which at his peak he was - I doubt he is now especially with Pattinson and Richardson in the wings. Doesn’t look like he’s really in the top five or so quicks in the BBL either.
Agreed. Although if he wanted to come on as bowling coach I'd have little objection.
There are maybe 6 balls that would go through to the keeper in a 4 over spell
Exactly

Didn’t he let byes through in the final over of Renegades loss? Then next game he was doing the same thing.
So how does his byes compare to other keepers?

Once again leading number of dismissals by a keeper... & due to international duties & covid has missed some games.

53 of which were from seamers nicking batsmen off.

Paine’s batting was very good this series and his keeping is still better than Carey’s.
73*, 13, 1, 1 39*, 50, 27

7 innings at an average of 41 due to the two *.

Certainly better than his career average, but its still a way from 'very good' - even by a keepers' standards. Especially considering he was batting at seven against an Indian attack that lost Shami midway through the first, then Yadav during the second, then Saini during the fourth.

Shami was fit all of the innings Paine batted in Adelaide

Sean Abbott wants a baggy green and will do what it takes to tour South Africa with the Test squad
great to see another NSW wanabeeeeeeeeee

Pattinson & Jye Richardson should be well ahead of Abbott. Nesser would be too.

Because I wasn't the one you asked. Byes aren't a great way of measuring how good a keeper is anyway
Most dismissals is a good indicator... or % of chances taken.

Except it isn't when 89% of the dismissals were off seamers. And yes, that would be a good measure, except nobody records that.

So you would prefer to ignore Carey takes more dismissals than other keepers & use your own vague criteria instead. His keeping is decent & he doesn't muck up many dismissals.

The best recent teams have had a batsman down the order who can change the course of a game. India showed that with Pant. Carey would give this for the Australian side. Has shown he has an elite temperament at international level which is crucial for the best players. Paine has shown he is not cool under pressure & it's cost us this latest series.

I'm getting a sneaking suspicion the selectors have Abbott next can off the rank.

Hope I'm wrong. He's improved recently but should be behind all three you mentioned and only injuries to the first two should be the reason he's within genuine sight of a baggy green. Personally I'd have Bird in front of him too, but I think that race has been run.

I wouldn't pay any credence to that stat. Do you know who held the previous record of that particular stat? Matthew Wade. Who is far and wide acknowledged as a poor keeper.

Carey could make it as a batsman. I don't think he'll make it as a keeper.

Inglis would give it too and is arguably a better keeper.

If scuttlebutt is worth anything apparently Renshaw is a well rounded young man who doesn't share the brown nosed dwarf's live and die for the baggy green attitude.

That may well be true but he's also just a young player who has had an extended loss of form.

People (including Renshaw himself) act like him being dropped was some shattering loss that he can't recover from, but he was dropped as a 22 year old who had averaged 26 across 2 series in the sub continent and then made 13 runs total v South Africa in 1 match post sandpaper.

First shield century in 2 years came in November 2020. He needs to put at least 1 good solid season together after a long period in the wilderness before we can consider his deficiencies worked on.

Australia had a match winning role with Paine in Adelaide, he also had a good cameo role alongside Green in Sydney that put us in a strong position to win.

He cracked in Sydney but to say he isn't cool under pressure after his 73* in Adelaide... Silly silly

You just feel like if Burns can go back to Shield cricket and find some form and work on a couple of things he could be right back in. He has a superb record with Warner and is a great fielder.

Paine admitted himself he lost his cool in the 3rd test & he lost control in the 4th test.

We won the Adelaide test of the back of a brilliant bowling display.

Silly, silly. ;)

Looks a great prospect, but currently unproven at international level.

Would take him & Carey to South Africa

Burns is an average fielder at best.
