No, he's very much straight up as a bowler. Nothing more than a 5th option.

So? Are you suggesting Mitch Marsh is a better bowler than James Pattinson?
The issues is most of the time he played he was picked as an all rounder but was hampered by shoulder injuries restricting his bowling. So we would pick an all rounder who was average at best with the stick and couldn’t bowl due to a dud shoulder

It wasn’t too long ago you had to literally make thousands of runs in a shield season to get a look in to the test team. Eg: Martyn, Hussey, Langer, Love

Now you’ve got clowns suggesting Maxwell get a gig without facing a red ball for more than two years. Or Kurtis Patterson who averages less with the bat than Peter Siddle over the last 18 months.

And then the selectors choose Carey despite averaging less than Nevill in the Shield over the last two years, and no one is suggesting he comes back in.

The lack of batting depth in Australian cricket must be at an all time critical level. Today we have NSW aka Australia A rolled for 160 by a 3 gamer, Jon Holland (lol) and an up and down soft plod (Pattinson)

And to top it off, the Shield season is shortened so we get even less indication of who might be capable.

up and down soft plod who has 81 test wickets at 26 (better than Starc) with a strike rate of 48 (better than Hazlewood) lol. Maybe the Vics just bowled well.
Agree with the rest

Starc going @7.3 an over currently in the shield.

Nice to see even though he has 0 wickets, he’s keeping his line nice and tight.

Is it me or is Starc the most over-rated bowler for Australia, in the test/4 Day format in recent times.

I mean his figures this season in both domestic & international matches have been pretty pathetic compared to how the media says how good he is

100% gets a game on reputation and not performance

255 wickets at 27 with the 7th best strike rate an Australian's ever had (with a few under 10 tests ahead of him)

I mean this season being replaced, don't get me wrong he has been a good player for us in his career but he has been shocking this season with the ball.

If only Pattinson didn't get injured, I would have put him in the 4th test instead of Starc.

You don't get 250 test wickets by being "serviceable".

Well good player then.

But it just feels like he has been off his line this season with his bowling and most would agree with that I believe.

That's fine, but to say his record is "pathetic" compared to the hype is hyperbole at it's worst.

He has been pathetic for a few years. Still has a good spell in him but they are few and far between now. He was also inconsistent even at his best but when he was at his best the good easily out weighed the bad

54 wickets at 20.6 over 2019 and 2020.

More often then not it is two of Archer, Anderson and Broad with Woakes as the third seamer batting 8 and Stokes as the forth pace bowling options.

Look at the Ashes in 19 only once did the keeper bat at 6 and that was the final test
Since the 19 Ashes it is something they have done a bit more of.

Can't argue with the rest of it though.

Your words cob. It’s fact that he’s done very little since his last major injury. Was the 5th best Victorian bowler in the shield last year. Not across the comp. His own team! Ordinary in the Ashes. A significant contributing factor to the Headingley test loss where he gave nothing. Just 130kph up and down.

His tough stickers make him look mean - I’ll give you that.

You will all be happy to know that Burns is 127no at the minute at Bellerive.

On a positive note Caleb Jewell made a maiden first class ton. Has anyone seen him play before? Is only 23.

Sorry, just checked again, and is still only 21.
