So you guys want to protect the vile posters in case the ramifications cause them to self harm?

Only have to look at your own board and how things progress when one calls one out as an idiot and the other retaliates in the same fashion.

And what do you mean by protect? Maybe a call out to the individual to attain some help may give them less reward than to give them exactly what they want.

I say 'maybe' because I don't know but this tit for tat and an eye for an eye shit is uncivilised

Sometimes.

But if you cut out the crap behaviour in the first place, then there is no cause for crap overreactions....
It's a really good point Ferris.

I'm still a relative newbie on this forum, and have never got involved in any social media platform before. Refused to. The only reason I signed up here when I stumbled on the site was to share some banter and thoughts with like minded fellow Blues supporters.

But from what I've observed, the angst really starts happening when you have one or two posters of questionable backgrounds posting comments aimed to generate heated responses. That's when the 'fun' begins, and rationality takes a back seat.

Our moderators do a bloody great job weeding these people out and suspending them.

Things progress on this board when repetitive negative agendas take hold and posters respond. The agenda folk then get upset at their right to have an agenda being censored. I mean, let's go back to the original transgression. The lack of constructive posting and general shit posting about representatives of the club we are here to support.

Do you think telling a vile poster to seek help is going to stop them? Do you think ignoring them is going to make them stop being vile or lessen the frustration of those that read it.

For every poster that threatens to leave this place because it's too touchy feely for them, another 5 are declaring they don't post as much because of the negativity. Both sides lament moderating.

We are a society of rules and consequences. If you punch someone and someone retaliated by punching you, I would argue the person you punched is more of a victim than you.

People need to be honest here. It's only the privileged that get this kind of response to people saying some dodgy crap.

If anyone of us had someone say what was said to Roughead nobody would care less.

It's words. If they are removed from the platform it's not protecting them.

As long as you're ok with the witch hunts spilling over and impacting other members of their family then you're fine with bullying.

Because thats what happens.

No, I'm fine with the banning and membership removal ramifications. I'm not okay with people publishing names and addresses and the media intervention.

Same approach we would use here. Fortunately people are largely anonymous here.

Social platforms are an extension of ones freedom of speech and
there are people forced to be in dark and lonely places, physical and mental.
It can happen easily and unexpectedly in modern societies.
Once marginalized, hurting people can and will lash out at society.
Much better that it be written vitriol via public platforms, than mindlessly killing and manning people in the street or place of worship.
As an evolving society we must embrace the good with the bad, we all have a role to play. Reach out and understand.

Of course we would. Online bullying is shit. People say dodgy shit on here all the time and get a reaction. Mods act on it. The only difference is it doesn't get picked up by media.

There are also people who get off on the things they say and the reactions they get. Are we telling those affected to get over it, to not retaliate in any way?

Unfortunately those of us that are not so anonymous set themselves up a little- I have been targeted over the years at Subiaco oval by Big footy people and not in a pleasant manner

And the system on here works fine.

How it's handled on here is how this incident should have been handled elsewhere.

Interesting discussion.
The anonymity afforded by social media is a blessing and a curse in some ways - it allows for the free exchange of thoughts & ideas in a pressure free environment that can help reduce ignorance etc.
The downside is that it often emboldens weak individuals to snipe at others for their struggles, difference of opinion or perceived issues.

I'm not sure but it makes sense to me.

I can tell you though, that through experience even the most aggressive people can be tempered with reason and relative politeness
Not easy when someone wants to plant a bottle in your face and of course it won't work all the time, but aggression only breeds aggression and the need to be proved right usurps logic and any practicality.
What is one doing when retorting in the same fashion as the aggressor? Seriously, what is that going to achieve?

People that need to vent in such a fashion may not be quite right and people with issues should be recognised as having issues and maybe...maybe, given half a chance to reflect, some may actually choose to kerb their ways. being called an animal does nothing....nothing at all.

This one off line about Roughead isn't bullying though. It's just shit talk.

Player wouldn't have even seen or known about it so it's not in anyway a direct attack.

It's the follow up that generally causes more grief these days

Reprehensible comments.

A quick look through this Facebook account show friends from all corners of the globe and the friends that are from Australia, have thousands of Facebook friends themselves. Also no history past Jan this year. Odd name aside, you could pretty safely assume this is not a real person. Just some bored childs shit posting account.

If you put this name into google you can find a horribly racist post they’ve made on a Facebook Queensland community group.

I’m happy with the clubs response, but how is some fools idiotic comment from a fake account worthy of national news?

These peanuts crave attention and I’ve no doubt they’re extremely satisfied with the social media outrage they’ve caused.

Got a lot of love and time for Roughie. Anyone who battles with and survives cancer, only deserves the utmost respect and kindness.

I think there should be additional punishment to cases like this aside from banning/revoking memberships and going to the footy.

Case in point, a few months ago a 19 year old Birmingham City soccer fan mocked the death lf Aston Villa player Jack Grealish over the tragic death of his baby brother, who died only 6 months old on twitter.

A professional Brummie Boxer found our about it, and challenged the troll to conaxt him and try make him atone for his horrific and vile tweet.

To the kid's credit, he did contact Bazza (th boxer) and a few days later was photographed helping to feed the homeless in Birmingham. And no, it doesn't wash away his hatefilled comment, but you would like to think he has grown up and become a better person after his stint of 'community service'

I do as well. Nothing against, Harks, he brings a shitload of quality to this place - he just frustrates me with his style and I find myself getting into slanging matches that both he and I agree does neither of us justice.

I dislike social media. And I really dislike the term social media influencer. You can probably do a course now on how to become one. Does my head in.
a course? get online - qualified..........
