I wouldn't really expect that, he's a cricket player not a neuroscientist. When he's going into a prepared a prepared promotional press conference and someone has had time to coach him on his lines, yeah maybe. On the boundary line a minute or two after he's been batting, I wouldn't expect him to think too much about what he is saying at all.
That makes it okay then.

The Renegades announced that it was a press conference. Trying to shrug off the role that the journalists are playing is exactly what Gayle did last night

Yeah, you are right. But airport press conferences tend to differ to ones in a media centre in terms of length and discussion. So his level of response is sufficient.

Welp, they didn't do a very good job drafting the Cricket Australia statement.

Melbourne Renegades opener Chris Gayle's conduct during interview deemed 'disrespectful and simply inappropriate'

Cricket Australia has condemned the actions of Melbourne Renegades batsman Chris Gayle towards Network TEN journalist, Mel McLaughlin.

Gayle was interviewed by McLaughlin following his dismissal in tonight's KFC Big Bash League clash against Hobart Hurricanes at Blundstone Arena, where he suggested the pair "should go out for a drink" after the match was over.

Gayle's uncomfortable and awkward advances where swiftly defused by McLaughlin, with the Jamaican then telling the reporter "don't blush, baby".

Anthony Everard, Head of the BBL, who was in Hobart, says Gayle’s actions have no place in the league or the sport in general.

"I heard Chris’s comments and they’re disrespectful and simply inappropriate," Everard said.

"We’ll certainly be talking to him and the Renegades about it. This league is all about its appeal to kids, families and females.

"There's just no place in the BBL – or, for that matter, cricket anywhere – for that sort of behaviour."

Renegades chief executive, Stuart Coventry, supported Everard's view in regards to his opening batsman’s behaviour tonight.

"I heard Chris’s comments and we agree with both Cricket Australia and Channel 10 that they’re disrespectful and simply inappropriate," Coventry said.

"We’ll certainly be talking to him in association with Cricket Australia about it.

"The Melbourne Renegades is all about its appeal to kids, families and females.

"There’s just no place for that sort of behaviour."

Joseph Q. Public, from West Moonah, echoed Everard's and Coventry's thoughts.

"I heard Gayle's comments and thought they were disrespectful and simply inappropriate," Mr Public said.

"I'm sure the BBL will be talking to him about it. From what I gather, the league is all about its appeal to kids, families and females.

"In my opinion there's just no place for that sort of behaviour."

Anyone who thinks what Gayle said/did is ok needs to listen to 2 leading women in cricket reporting, Neroli Meadows & Melinda Farrell discuss why it's so inappropriate - I couldn't figure out how to link the Soundcloud, but just google 'The Press Room SCG Day 3". It's on Grandstands soundcloud.

Well there's her first mistake. It's a meaningless smashabout form of the game which players like Gayle don't take seriously (other than the paycheque), so why would you expect an insightful interview?
I am not sure about "meaningless" but it's certainly cricket dumbed down about as far as you can go.

A BBL game is just one big party from start to finish, with the players getting their egos pumped up endlessly in the process.

And Channel 10 is happy to play a part in all that too, let's not forget that.

So it's hardly a surprise that a player with an overblown view of his self-importance (due to the whole concept) decided to go into party mode himself.

That makes it okay then.
I didn't say it was OK. But if you're going to run a competition that is focused solely on big hits fireworks and adrenaline and then insist on interviewing players when they've barely got off the ground you have to expect them to say stuff without thinking.

I tend to find that when people say things without thinking they are the most honest. We found out a fair bit about Gayle last night, and I'm finding a lot out about how most people feel about these issues. I have never really considered myself a feminist before but the complete lack of empathy from most Australian 'blokes' on this matter is concerning.

"There wasn't anything meant to be disrespectful or offending to Mel, and if she felt that way then I'm really sorry for that"

This should be the end of it.

That's not an apology, and we all know it, because we've all seen these pathetic non-apologies.

Apologise for what you said - don't downgrade her concerns by saying "I'm sorry if she felt offended by it".

Well yeah. I don't think we found out anything at all about Chris Gayle last night. He's being paid a shitload of money to have a six week trip to Australia where is being treated as a superstar everywhere he goes. Did you really think he doesn't check out the female journos who are sent to fawn over him?

Well, duh. We found out more about his character than we did his desires.

This is completely idiotic, and it's really the essence of the problem.

Why do people like you find it so hard to understand that a female can work in cricket? They are not "sent to fawn over him", they are sent to do a job, and the deserve to be respected by players as they do it.

What did Mel say to you when you spoke last night?

And they are. A little joke or two here and there ≠ disrespect.

Referring to her as 'baby' transcends a joke, it is ridiculous and disrespectful behaviour. Might as well have slapped her arse and asked her to make her a sandwich. Imagine how humiliating it would have felt for her on national TV.

I think women can work in cricket. And play cricket.

I don't question the women who do, I question the motives of the network.

Is she being sent down there as a genuine reporter or the reporter easiest on the eye?

Just as an aside, how many ugly/unattractive/overweight female reporters do you see on Australian TV?
