not illegal, just sleazy

generally speaking, i don't think you can use someone being offended, or uncomfortable as proof that something inherently bad was done to them - plenty of people go off the handle for any little thing said to them. there are things that are wrong regardless of how someone feels about them.

less hard to go past though is the nuts and bolts of it - a female presenter shouldn't be propositioned, or expected to be, while on air. it's not too much to ask.

feel sorry for all involved. the guys laffing it up in the commentary box have to look mel in the face again, and vice versa.

But its alright for a female bartender or supermarket counter worker to be chatted up? This is just complete discrimination in favour of the famous and wealthy. Nobody ever gives a shit if a no-name blue collar lady gets asked out for a drink by a customer at work. But if a wealthy famous white collar lady gets asked out for a drink at work then it's the end of the world!

And of course there's a massive difference between 'let's grab a drink after, don't blush' and 'I'm going to bend you over the hood of my car and **** your brains out'. The former, assuming it's only ever asked once if the answer is 'no', is not harassment by any objective standard.

Well of course it won't make sense to someone who disregards logic :drunk:

Can you explain the term 'mansplaining' to me? Or would that be 'mansplaining'? o_O

I think he meant it made no sense to people who have an understanding of the English language and basic sentence construction.

Gayle at the airport being ambushed by angry mob

Homer was falsely accused in that episode. Gayle is not in real life.

Ah, time to play the race card.

Sharapova's in this instance was saved a little by her language. You have good self esteem when you speak, it is really nice. What was the question, I was just admiring your form. Her apparent flirtation decided to compliment him on an actual job skill, not his appearance in the first part and the second part she could pass on as the same even though we would know better. She is also saved by the fact that he was reciprocating her compliments so was apparently flirting back.

The thing is though that he would have gone up in people's estimation for reciprocating. Not sure Mel would have.

Another thing to add, particularly in the context of tennis, is that many of the top players communicate with the same journalists across the tour - so there's always the possibility they may have regular banter (etc.) at various tournaments. I don't feel as if the two incidents/events are comparable.

Rubbish. People are saying he's a sexist, people are saying his actions are symptomatic of a greater culture of misogyny and sexism in cricket. He's being accused of an awful lot of things, and the only accusation which is even moderately true is that Gayle should not have asked McLaughlin out for a drink on live TV - but, as I have been saying, even that is a false accusation because nobody levels it at men hitting on females in less lucrative and less public workplace environments and industries.

As my best mate quite succinctly says, "Is there any difference between the guy paying for a hooker and the guy taing a girl out on a date, buying her dinner and paying for everything that night and then sleeping with her? Essentially they're both paying for sex. Just that one is socially acceptable."

Amen

C'mon dude. No one believes that "best mate" smokescreen.

It does seem they had some sort of previous mutual chemistry. Still, keep it off air.

Russell Brand is a comedian promoting a comedy movie for adults. "R (for strong sexual content and drug use throughout, and pervasive language)"

And that makes it okay for him to be harassed by a so called "professional" tv presenter. He laughed it off and got through the interview but why should he be subjected to that kind of behaviour day in day out in his job?

After reviewing all evidence i believe this is a race issue. No complaints from Mel here:

Did she have a friendship with Cahill? Was she taken aback? Was she just trying to learn what was appropriate at that time?

Fancy trivialising this by reversing it and calling it racism. Pathetic.

Lol people are kidding themselves if they think the Sharapova thing is any different. The guy responded hesitantly and was taken aback yet its okay because she was 'only' admiring his confidence and voice. Jesus wept. If there's any sexism going on here its against men because apparently its perfectly fine for women to hit on men but not the other way around. Such pansies the lot of you, go and live in the middle east if you want to complain about men having more rights and all that bullshit.

Much as I think it's gone over the top it was pretty unprofessional and piss poor of Gayle to put her on the sport right on national TV.

That's undeniable.

Sharapova's one and Dwayne Bravos comments to Mel a few years ago were in my opinion a lot more acceptable.

You really should actually watch that movie. His mother falls in love with him, and he spends all his time spurning her.

You speak like I havent seen it a bunch of times

Watch the video...it was clearly more awkward than what Gayle did

And Mel hasn't said anything publicly about either. This is blowing up because others in the industry are conveying her thoughts and standing up for female sports reporters in general. Last time, this didn't happen.

You suggesting that she is fine with being objectified if it is white man but not a black man is ridiculous, defames her, and trivialises sexual harassment.

The tone and purpose of the interview is completely different to why Gayle was interviewed in a cricket match.

Is Gayle going to be at the 4.30 club press conference?

I'm not talking about her specifically but more society as a whole. There was no stink when Cahill did something worse than Gayle. I agree that until we hear her thoughts the entire thing is a massive beat up (which her employer and various other media sources are looking to gain significant mileage from).
