Good to hear, now can we move on? Unfortunately I doubt the media will let us.

We should move on from the Gayle incident but not from sexual harassment towards female journos in general. Like most things that require an attitude adjustment they need the constant discussion to begin to affect change over time.

So explain Mel Jones on the BBL then...? Definitely employed on qualifications over looks.
Did I say there aren't exceptions?

It's rife among the commercial networks and has been for years. I watched the channel 9 news this afternoon and it was attractive female presenter followed by attractive female reporter after attractive female reporter.........

If she was traditionally 'ugly' would it be alright?

Of course not. I mention her attractiveness because that is what he commented on and we were talking specifics.

If you are reducing a woman to a potential date or partner in that situation, regardless of attractiveness, it may constitute sexual harassment.

I had no idea this was such a broad issue, I've never seen a sportsman say anything remotely like what Gayle did last night to a female journo. Even Mel herself said it's never happened to her before. If people like Neroli Meadows have had issues with Gayle in the past, why not bring it up before now? Seems like people are making this a far bigger issue than it actually is.

Exactly the Gayle incident is only scratching the surface of deeply inherent attitudinal problems that unfortunately appear to be no where near shifting.

Mel accepted the apology from Gayle as well and wants to move on, all class.
Yep. Definitely expected she'd be professional about it whilst still acknowledging if as am unacceptable. Unfortunately this won't alter the outdated attitudes of many.

Referring to her as 'baby' transcends a joke, it is ridiculous and disrespectful behaviour. Might as well have slapped her arse and asked her to make her a sandwich. Imagine how humiliating it would have felt for her on national TV.
Yep Carbine...the "baby" comment indicates a patronising and proprietary view of woman.

It is both baffling and dismaying that some on this thread can't grasp this.

It is a pity as Mel, I think, is streets ahead in her presentation and professionalism on the BBL compared to the blokes.

There is nothing more tedious than an ex-cricketer/footballer tonguing the ex-cricketer/footballer next to him.

Do you think the immediate 'oh here come the do gooders', 'get a sense of humour', 'this country is getting ridiculous' leaps to defend this might have made 'small scale' impossible?

Agree this was probably not his intention.

Addressing her because of her sexual attractiveness as a potential date and calling her 'baby' in a suggestive manner comes pretty close.

I believe this IS the issue and I am hoping people concentrating on this one incident don't allow this to be lost. It is certainly the issue for the female journalists that have stood up to be heard today. They believe they are just as good as their male counterparts, that they earned their careers and that propositioning them while doing their job pays no respect to their role or professionalism, instead reducing them to their sexual attraction.

Who are we to argue they should not feel that way?
1) I'm not sure what to make I the first line.

2)If it's not his intention, as he's even stated, then the whole conversation should be viewed in this context. But it isn't. It's "Chris is a d/h. Poor Mel."

3)This is where I think things get tricky. Without disrespect, I think you've taken the extreme interpretations with some of the words. You could replace "sexual" with "physical", which is inoffensive. "Baby" could be a term of endearment. It was brazen, but it didn't come across to me full on as some others have.

4)The workplace argument I find a little odd. As I've said similar on the SEN thread. She may be at work as a professional reporter. But sports reporting is not a conventional job. It's an indulgent occupation. She may take it seriously as a professional, but she's not doing anything important. I find it naïve that anyone would deny physical appearance playing a role in a woman's career enhancement, particularly McLaughlin's.

Surely Gayle isn't the only sportsman going around who's perceived as lecherous. What other stories do they have in the vaults? Who else should women be wary of? Who else needs to change their behaviour?

Let's get it out on the table rather than indulging in opportunism.

Is it that common?

I mean it doesn't appear to have happened that often from what has been made public and Chris Gayle of course isn't Australian

There is always room for the past player clause. Didn't she have an extensive cricketing career?

This clause certainly creates jobs for decent AFL players to become ordinary AFL commentators. Haven't heard Jones though. She may be very good. There is a back door in for past players in the media though.

Some female journos were suggesting it was prevalent today. I'll take that at face value. It has been rife in the US and I don't think it matters where it happens or the nationality of the person as such. We all set standards domestically and internationally.

Do you know the context of the first one? Was it a set up dialogue? Was the man offended? Did it affect his professional integrity?

Lastly, does one invalidate the other?

She also accepted Gayle's apology, which was glossed over in a few media reports of her interview.

Is it sexual harassment when women throw their panties at Motley Crüe ?

Unwanted sexual advances ... hmm. Do they have a history of using their occupation to sleep with women? Their case on the surface appears weaker.
