What makes athletes so special that they're so "above" having a short, respectful chat with another person? They're good at sport, that's it.
They're not above anything. However these rubbish sideline interviews have always pissed me off in any sport. They add absolutely nothing and almost every time the players/coaches just want to get away.

Again, I agree. They are an utter waste of time.

What a genuinely idiotic comment. Surely in this day and age of professionalism, sports personalities have had some media training so they are able to not only "hit sixes" but talk to others about hitting sixes. And surely included in that training would be to show respect to the interviewer.
He's not from Australia where 99% of athletes now are boring robots who provide no entertainment when people chat to them. Probably hasn't had the same level of media training.

Probably a reason he made himself look so creepy.

I had no idea this was such a broad issue, I've never seen a sportsman say anything remotely like what Gayle did last night to a female journo. Even Mel herself said it's never happened to her before. If people like Neroli Meadows have had issues with Gayle in the past, why not bring it up before now? Seems like people are making this a far bigger issue than it actually is.
They have made statements on Grandstand. Have a listen or read the transcript. You will see lots of reasons they try to ignore it, lots of issues around who has the power, what women fear will happen if they complain, how much time they will spend complaining if they complain about it every time it happens, how they will be perceived by others.

All this when it is not something they are doing - it is being done to them. Daily.

a) Again, part of his job, however you want to word it.
b) Paying taxes isn't something I like. But I do it. I do it how it should be done and I get on with it. Something Chris Gayle seemingly finds too hard.

Dont backpedal now. You said it was his JOB to give interviews, not part of it.

Oh I see so you realise you can't argue with what I said so you're just going to get into words now. Righto. Off you go then.

I've always had far more time for post game pressers once players and coaches calm down and can gather their thoughts.

These new mid game ones are terrible.
I also agree. But what does that have to do with being able to do them with with a level of respect for the person interviewing them?

Double standards in todays society, see the sunrise reporter accosting a gentleman on the beach in her ‘’news report’’. No outrage there. Because there doesn't need to be. Tell me what is the basic point of difference about the two situations?

Already been discussed.

a) We don't know if he was offended or humiliated

b) We don't know if it was a set up dialogue

c) He doesn't appear to be performing his job at the time

Aside from that, you make the statement there is no outrage because there doesn't need to be. So you have decided that one was okay, therefore this one was. What if they both weren't okay but this one got the attention?

Need more information on the first.

He's an international cricketer. He's had media training.

Exactly. Coming off the ground at half-time in an AFL game for instance.

Having played cricket for a long time I know that interviewing someone immediately after he has been dismissed is the WORST time to do it.

I'm not arguing with what you said, I flat out disproved it's bulldust that giving interviews is his "job" and playing cricket isn't.

Nobody's getting into wordplay here. I'm quoting what you said directly. I think it's more a case of you've seen how stupid it is, so you're now trying to muddy the waters accusing others of petty word play.

Then again, this is consistent with you having built strawman arguments for quite a while now.

So long as those same principles applies to all, and not just men of color. Because that is what our government do, they only ban black athletes and singers coming into the country (with unacceptable records), and they rightfully aren't allowed in. But, that only seems to apply to black athletes and singers, it doesn't apply to white athletes and singers, who get a pass. That is double standards. I can't help but think if Shane Warne had of made a pass at Mel, that he'd be applauded by half the country, yet Gayle does it and we want to string him up to Fed Square. The point I am trying to make isn't that it is acceptable behavior because it is anything but, however, the same principles should apply to all, no matter what their skin color is.

From what I've been reading here, he is being applauded, or at the very least strongly defended, by half.

And is this the best defence you can concoct for Chris Gayle's comments last night? Because it's fair weak.

Come on man, let's not do the pedantic-semantic thing OK?

Are you surprised? Have you seen his post history? Struggles to build a half coherent argument. I think it's self-reinforcing if you have a different opinion to said poster.

Oh I see, you can't dispute that so you're resorting to pulling out more things that aren't there.

I'm clearly defending his job as a sportsman and not an interview giver, not his comments.

I was always under the impression Boonie was a puffed-up, Ocker yob.

Dull with a bat in his hand too.

Can barely recall a memorable shot by the great tinnie guzzler.

"When are we going to the pub?"

It certainly would've been a reason he took the piss like that.

Doubt he would've been the same in a sit down press conference post game.
You see it as taking the piss. A large portion of female journalists see it as the shit they cop on a regular basis.

Nobody's saying he was intentionally trying to upset her or make her feel uncomfortable. But the fact is he did. And the fact is this happens far too often. That's all it is.

Hilarious this coming from a troll. Don't make me go back and quote your rants about eating kfc and people's grammar and how you think they are "grown up discussions".

You will be pretty embarrassed.

Is anyone denying he was acting creepy?
Read the thread. Or Facebook. Twitter. The comments section of articles. Countless people have described it as a joke. Or that she should take it as a compliment. Or so forth.

Not just any international cricketer, but a former Test Captain. Surely had plenty of experience speaking with the media and people involved in the game, and knowing what to say and when to say it.
