Yep Carbine...the "baby" comment indicates a patronising and proprietary view of woman.

It is both baffling and dismaying that some on this thread can't grasp this.

It is a pity as Mel, I think, is streets ahead in her presentation and professionalism on the BBL compared to the blokes.

There is nothing more tedious than an ex-cricketer/footballer tonguing the ex-cricketer/footballer next to him.

But sadly not surprising.

Oh I see, you can't dispute that so you're resorting to pulling out more things that aren't there.

I'm clearly defending his job as a sportsman and not an interview giver, not his comments.
The discussion was why should Gayle give proper answers in a "meaningless" interview. So no, I'm not pulling out things that aren't there. I'm simply referring to the conversation as a whole. That's how conversations work you see.

re: comments on mel's professionalism

chris should be thanking his lucky stars she didn't take him to task on television. i don't know if someone like clementine ford has written an article on this yet - i can imagine her commenting that it makes her angry that mel's professionalism is applauded, because it involved a certain amount of acquiescence (whereas ford would typically take a more adversarial stance).

should mel have made an example of him on TV? was a landmark, julia gillard vs tony abbott moment missed? or should she avoid the limelight?

Although I think the reaction to this is a bit overblown, I'm not defending his comments.

You said I'm trying to defend his comments. = pulling things out that aren't there.

Conversations work by conversing with the ideas people are actually giving, not with the words you put in their mouth. It seems you've been fighting with so many people about this last night and today you're having trouble keeping up.

I made the point before.

The BBL is just one big partaaaaaaaaay. From start to finish.

And it is no bigger partaaaaaaaaaay than for someone like Gayle. He gets paid a heap of money to come out here for a month or two and slog the ball around, field for 20 overs a time and otherwise be treated like some rock God.

And as a result, he is so full of himself, he then turns round and treats the whole thing like a partaaaaaaaaaaay. Well, there's a shock..............

I don't defend what he said. Not for a minute. But I can sure as hell see how something like this has occurred.

And that's not even touching on the fact that the media thinks the only females worth hiring and putting in front of him for interviews are hotties.

Don't make me go back and quote your rants about eating kfc and people's grammar and how you think they are "grown up discussions".

You will be pretty embarrassed.
So because I called your precious KFC out for being terrible for your health, and the fact people struggle to read your poorly constructed sentences (I think you need to look up the word "rant", PM me if you need a link, happy to help), you will embarrass me? Yet you are relying on semantics to mount an argument?

Go ahead. :)

A word of advice though, don't get so defensive all the time when people are trying to help you. It makes you look weak, and less credible than you already appear. :thumbsu:

Since my first post in the gameday thread last night, I've had over 240 alerts. So y'all probably do all blend together at some point.

What part of the reaction is overblown exactly? For the most part it's just been female journalists trying to explain that this isn't a one off and is symbolic of a larger problem in the industry. Is that really overblown?

Mel Jones?
Lisa Sthalekar?

Would you class then as "hotties"?

Your trolling needs a lot more work to come up to a level that's at least respectable.

Until then, get back in your box.

Then what does her career get reduced to? "The girl who got shitty with Chris Gayle."

Is anyone denying he was acting creepy?

No but they are denying that it is anything more than a harmless joke, that it is offensive, that it constitutes harassment.

Journalists having their say on the issue isn't overblown at all.

Much of the outrage here is.

Could newcomers to the thread do the rest of us the courtesy of reading the early contributions? It's very tedious seeing all the same old points (and attachments) from people who think they are being original and clever.

"When are we going to the pub?"
Is that statue at Bellerive?

It's not true enough to life for my liking.

For a start, the moustache is not quite the epic bogan level one Boonie attained and
the head is too small.

Otherwise, captures the little rascal perfectly.

See, providing exceptions to the rule only enhances my point. Thank you.

Watch the commercial media over a period of time. And note how many unattractive females they hire in the areas of on air sports/news/weather presenting.

You won't come up with many at all my friend.

Nah dude there's this interview with a surfer it'll BLOW YOUR MIND

I'm not arguing with what you said, I flat out disproved it's bulldust that giving interviews is his "job" and playing cricket isn't.

Nobody's getting into wordplay here. I'm quoting what you said directly. I think it's more a case of you've seen how stupid it is, so you're now trying to muddy the waters accusing others of petty word play.

Then again, this is consistent with you having built strawman arguments for quite a while now.

You know that his contract (his terms of employment for his job) covers his behavior on and off the field and more than likely (haven't personally read it) has provisions for media obligations. Argue the appropriateness of his comments if you really want to but it's clear that they were both there in a professional capacity doing their respective jobs at their place of employment.

I'm not arguing that looks don't come in to it. I would say that they do in many, many circumstances, for both sexes. Outside of media as well.

Generally, people who are regarded as more attractive do receive benefits and special treatment. That's a completely different issue though and I agree it's not right. What does that have to do with the particular incident though?

Well aware of that and it doesn't change my point the least bit.

He's a professional sportsman first and foremost, and speaking to the media comes secondary.

But it's 27 pages :(

On paper, it didn't sound too bad, but on seeing it, totally awkward and a bit creepy. Mel had a right to be pissed and Gayle should offer a proper apology, not the faux one.

I think the Renegades response was ridiculous on two fronts. I definitely think Gayle was in the wrong but the $10,000 fine is completely unnecessary. More so when they then try to dismiss it as 'cultural differences', which is such an absurd response.

If he is a professional sportsman no it doesn't. He plays cricket but that's not all he gets paid for. You are basically saying anyone who gets paid for doing a job only has one task, if they are asked to do anything else they dont have to, not sure if you have ever been employed but it doesnt work that way for sportspeople or anyone else.

Do you thing the babe to non-babe ratio seen on tv reflects that of real life ?
Of course not. As I mentioned, it's documented that attractive people receive more opportunities and greater benefits. That doesn't make it right though.

Actually, it obliterates your point. You said doing interviews is not his job. It definitely is part of his job. Even if it comes secondary to cricket, most people's jobs are multi-faceted and aren't limited to just one thing.
