I can't believe people here and the media are still going on about this.

A few stupid flippant remarks made in a brief boundary side interview in a hit and giggle cricket game and suddenly it's blown up into WW3.

The way this country over reacts to every minor non PC incident these days is both ridiculous and embarrassing, even Mel McLaughlin said she's accepted Gayle's apology and wants to move on while Gayle must be shaking his head at the media witchhunt of him which has resulted in him having to pay an unnecessary $10k fine just to appease the frothing media/PC brigade.

Good grief.
This must be so horrible for you. Having to read things on the internet. How hard your life must be.

The other thing is that the frothing media were the ones that played up his off field persona, then backed up the truck so fast your head will spin as soon as he played to the 'character' they'd helped create.
Would have been good for someone to point out he was playing the character as cast. Nobody has, not even him.

Probably the biggest issue is that he still doesn't get it.

His public apology was a non-apology. He walked off when the questions insinuated he was in the wrong, not that she took his advances the wrong way. He still doesn't get it.

"I'm sorry if she took my joke the wrong way. I am sorry if she took offence."
Vs
"I am sorry I said something offensive. I am sorry that I caused offence."

One adds insult to injury, the other is a genuine apology.

That Grandstand piece is probably the best explanation of the situation and all the surrounding issues. Listen to it or read the transcript.

Meanwhile a kid dies from a coward's punch and this incident was at the forefront of the media.
Wtf? That was all over the news. It was on the front page of the papers. It was all over social media.

Utter stupidity. Again, if it's not her workplace what's she doing there? She's a journalist. It's her job. It's her workplace.
The concept of a "workplace" is not meant for someone who is lawfully engaged in worked outside their offices or factory.

I installed a kitchen. Their house isn't my workplace. I don't have the same rights as if they were in my factory. The term should not be used, but it is to make Gayle's offence seem worse.

Why don't we talk about both?

 I'm sure you understand why the word character was in inverted commas.

it's not horrible for me, it's just annoying and embarrassing the way people and the media overreact to minor incidents like this.

The attention it's getting is way out of proportion to what actually happened and it seems to be a growing trend these days, AFL players can barely go out for a drink these days without it becoming headline news.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that's getting sick of it.

No she doesn't - Gayle did this.

But she said it is good people are talking about it. Her colleagues are standing up for her. His colleagues are standing up for her.
ok, devils advocate.

Can Warnie really treat women with due respect and better than Gayle when he has slept with thousands. And how does Buddy come up with his metric century many months shy of a year. And what about the Australian captain who slept with 50 ladies on a Caribbean tour?

the problem was and is, Gayle navigated this dynamic with his Caribbean sensibility. Your question to blackcat is, what is Gayle's "Caribbean sensibility", well, it is part a Caribbean culture, part a patriarchy of last century (in Australian 2016 terms), and part a sports star sports celebrity hagiography.

Like someone has already said, it is perfectly reasonable behaviour when Russell Brand the King shagger and shagger-of-the-year in Britain, flirts outrageously with the married young mother Fifi Box when he was on The Project (risible show that is)...

Russell Brand ok, Gayle not ok. Why? Gayle does not have the finesse or dexterity to pick up social hints and cues in Australia2016. His behaviour was no more outrageous than Brand however.

they need to point the finger at everywomen who indulges these men also. They have enabled this behaviour where it has become normalised. Then they should do an assessment of human psychology and motivation, and they can leave the individuals out of it.

hyperbole. The attention is welcome by them when it comes with advantages. If the side flips, then they complain. But with the average 300k salary and all the accouterments that accompany it

I'm confused. I could have sworn he tried to cop a feel, go in for a smooch and slipped his hotel key into her pocket and suggested they continue the interview in his room later. Naked. Isn't that what happened?

So imagine if almost every day you were at work you had to experience this? How sick of it would you be? You have to read about it. They have to live it.

You put a lot of words into my mouth there. I never said it was okay. I said on the surface it was inappropriate but talked about factors that muddied the waters.

You are reducing this to 1. At work 2. Sexual advances = same thing.

A key word you have to consider for sexual harassment is 'unwanted'.

A key word you have to consider for workplace harassment is 'humiliation'.

Yes they might both have violated workplace policies as to appropriate behaviour while at work but that's an individual workplace thing.

The key issue in the McLaughlin case is how it made her feel.

The key issue for me overall is that it belittled her job status and it's a problem that affects female journalists in general.

But this is not an OH&S and workplace issue, as much as the female brigade wishes it to be.

Gayle's persona and actions have been enabled and normalised. If (I dont doubt this either), if Gayle has developed a reputation for being a hard or difficult subject for a female sport interviewer, where is the 101 interview school for difficult mark, are they sharing strategies. When he attempts to undress your with his eyes and stare into your eyes, you meet his gaze with the steely gaze, and repeat the question and add "you are a professional and star of the BB on the big money, lets get this interview done..." if Gayle refuses to move the interview back to cricket subject, the producer cuts it then, and MM or the interview gets it in the earpiece that they are off camera now, then MM/interviewer can say "CG you are obliged to conduct the interview on cricket matters as per your big money contract with the Renegades, and if you cannot fulfill your contractual obligations, there are ramifications, and we can speak to the GM of the Renegades and your communications officer of the Renegades to get this thing done to both our satisfaction"

MM can get the producer of C10 BB in her corner, and insist that if Gayle takes the subject ofcourse, they switch to alternative highlights in the editing suite, and MM will handle a proactive solution with the adults on the ground, and Howie can stop chuckling, and the twitter post-production and social media suite dont have to put up CG's amorous advances on twitter/youtube/socialmedia. And then Howie does not have to give us the motherhood statements platitudes and bromides

And the female press corps of sportsjournalism can share their 101 for the difficult mark.

But an honesty would recognise the hyper-sexualised environment, and the reputations warranted that sportsmen have for their nocturnal appetite(s). And if they isolate CG as a serial offender, p'raps they may explain how a cricket captain has his own slant on Boonie's beer record... or Buddy Franklin... or Warnie's "hijinx". That is a more comprehensive context.

If we merely put this in a Maurice Blackburn office with lawyers and sexual harassment, I would expect nothing more from paint-by-numbers lawyers who see this in such simplistic term. It is easy when a book says how you should "think". paint-by-numbers aint thinking.

The deflection tactics still go on
- what about the other incidents of sexual harassment against men (see sunrise/UFC/Maria Sharapova)
- what about the kid that got king hit

Go start a thread on those then.
I am not deflecting. I am doing the opposite. The Gayle "incident" does not occur in isolation. There are enablers. One of which is MM's employer, if one wishes to take up a sexual harassment suite, p'raps her employer should be in the docks too.

I'm confused. I could have sworn he tried to cop a feel, go in for a smooch and slipped his hotel key into her pocket and suggested they continue the interview in his room later. Naked. Isn't that what happened?

You would have thought so by the over the top reaction.

Well if you're referring to Mel McLaughlin, I'm sure she doesn't experience that sort of thing every day. I watch a lot of the BBL and she's generally treated with respect by her male colleagues at Ch10 and by the players, the Chris Gayle thing was a one off and even that wasn't as bad as it's being made out to be.

It's hard to feel too sorry for her, she has a pretty sweet media gig which she is very well paid for and travels to some great sports events like the Sochi Winter Olympics and the Brazil World Cup. She's a very good female sports reporter but no doubt one of the reasons she has landed these sweet media gigs is because of her attractive looks and unfortunately the downside of that is that she will probably cop some unwanted flirting from guys in her line of work but on the whole I don't think she has it too bad. I would gladly swap places with her to earn the sort of money she is on and travel to the sports events she does and I'm sure a lot of people would do the same.

As someone said earlier in the thread, you'd be forgiven for thinking he bent her over on a chair and did her live on tv. Such is the outcry.

Can you list some examples of said outcry to the proportion you're claiming?

Exec - "Hey Mel, you know how you are a respected cricket journalist can you go interview Gayle about Cricket and his innings"
Mel - "Sure..." "Chris well played, had to go aggressive there to get the run rate up?"
Gayle - "Dont blush baby"

And thats Tens fault is it?

Now from here people are doing two things
1- "Awww Ten painted him up to be a playboy so what was he meant to do"... Really? If i said Blackcat is a thug can you use that as an excuse if you king hit someone? Nah, you cant.
2- She is a pretty girl so she should expect it. Which most people are pointing out is the crux of the issue here.

For full clarity i dont think in isolation its that bad (i think i even said if you take out the "don't blush baby" its pretty harmless, stupid but generally harmless) but deflecting the blame off of Chris or away from the sexism that female journos in male dominated sports face on a daily basis (which is what blaming Ten or anyone else is doing) is a problem. The incident also isn't in isolation anymore, the thing has gotten huge, fast legs now. He has form in this area, he gave a piss poor apology and the backwards misogynist views of many, many people are coming to the fore.

Good grief did I just travel back to the 1950's?

This isn't the first time this has happened to Mel Mclaughlin: She openly flirted with Tim Cahill a couple of years ago and is quite flirtatious when hosting. She is well aware of her assets. She is also a very good knowledgeable presenter of the game, a breath of fresh air but this massive, almost hysterical over reaction is quite sad. The Gayle persona of the cricketing playboy was created by Ten and the media, pics of Gayle with bikini clad "babes "smoking cigars and drinking champagne were all over the place, this was an incident just waiting to happen. His persona was created to help get bums on seats and TV ratings, it worked! When it all backfires and their creation over steps the line we instantly hit a button and out comes the whingeing and complaint squad, something we have world-beating skills and panoramic abilities at doing these days. The new puritanism is alive, well and powerful. I acknowledge Gayle's wrong doing, inappropriate in prudish Australia in 2016, but i condemn those who created him and then dump on him when it all goes a little too far. 10k fine? What will Dustin Martin's fine be for threatening to insert chopsticks into a young lady's eyeballs? In this case the Aussie sense of humour has long since left us, Gayle was making a joke, inappropriate yes, but a joke nonetheless. I wonder if the same reaction would be met if say Cameron White had a crack at Mel? It's not the first time a player has flirted with Mel, back in January 2014 when Dwayne Bravo responded during an interview : “I just want to say hello to Mel, beautiful Mel, I was lucky enough to meet her once in Sydney. I just want to say hi and I see she’s still looking beautiful.” Overall i think she handled that flirt and this one very well, not so sure about her boss David Barham who over reacted completely this time or was that part of the plan all along? The game is now a lot bigger than it was two years ago! Nobody remembers the Bravo flirt and let's face it, Ten need all the publicity they can get.

I've got no idea what mansplaining is, is that something you heard from Charlie Pickering one night?

Maybe you could respond to my post with a sensible argument rather than some stupid throwaway label to score more PC points.

Good grief did I just travel back to the 1950's?

I don't see how my post reflects the 1950s in anyway, maybe you could enlighten me.
