had a bit of a chuckle the few times that mike seemed a bit uncomfortable with how worked up rex was appearing to get. mike would sort of put his hand up in an uneasy fashion sort of as if to say 'don't stand on your chair rex, just calm down'. was absolutely great to watch especially because i'm a huge rex fan.

i wish he'd get back into commentary and he did say he misses it, but i guess he's got to concentrate on family more and i think he has a fishing show on one of the AM radio stations as well as afl live

Just back on Rex, an hour would have given a good ten minutes to discuss the highlights of his playing career and another ten to discuss his commentary career. He's arguably the most famous football commentator of all time and he barely touched on it.

Should have been more content on the 'war' between Rex Hunt and the late Bill Jacobs on 3AW. Would like to know why these two never got on away from the microphone.

A crying shame that one of radio's great callers had to leave because of Rex Hunt.

I was hoping for some flashbacks and excerpts of his colourful commentary, unfortunately there was nothing of the sort

just to touch on the apparent self importance rex has/had. when did this become obviously evident? what are some examples of him being selfish/self centered?

i mean in commentary btw, excluding things like his affairs etc.

The man who lectured on 3AW about men being loyal to their wives/girlfriends and he did the opposite.

Not many realise that Rex got his break calling VFA footy in the early 80's - His calling style is better suited to TV.

I think it was after Rex spoke about Clinton Grybas, who Mike Sheehan would have known pretty well too. Still such a heartbreaking story to this day.

Also interesting to hear about his move to Triple M. I've always had them as my footy station, so probably never really truly appreciated Rex Hunt when he was commentating, but he was a lot more mellow with them. So it didn't surprise me to hear that he had been told to tone it back, and that he would only play 2nd or 3rd fiddle in the commentary box.

Has anyone listened to him on AFL Live this year?
Yes,a little bit on the car radio, it's an all star cast on croc media, better than what you guys are getting on the radio in Melbourne, I would suspect. Seem's like Rex is doing matches on saturdays and sundays. Calls with Sandy Roberts on saturdays and Peter Donegan on sundays, Shane Crawford doe's the 'special' comments. Funny stuff, with Rex and Crawfs! Caught some post game last sat, Rex was going on about playing chess with some dude named Ivan Nakarov and his brother Buster Nakarov...........lol :-). He's lapping it up, fan's of 'classic' Rex would be in their 'element'. Personally I don't mind listening to him if the match is not a pressure cooker but if it's an important match, I'd rather listen to someone else.

i remember listening to him when he did the geelong v north prelim final in 94, when Tutor kicked the ball all you heard for the next 30 seconds was yelling and a whole lot of comotion and no one had any idea what happened until Ablett kicked the goal, Hunt apologised right after it for getting carried away.

That would be vintage radio, would love to hear it.

Watching the Rex episode, I really didn't want to hear about all the sordid stuff. It's just really grubby. I'd rather it not be a platform for people to confess their sins in public....not the non-football related ones anyway. Happy for them to explore football-related controversies of course.

Being at a ground listening to Rex commentating on Geelong games with Gary Snr in the 90s was one of the great joys. Total chaos in the box but at least you knew what was happening at the ground. I stopped listening to him after Gary retired though, couldn't see the point :) It seemed like he had more to say on that topic with Mike & it was edited out, maybe it'll be in the full version.

what full version?

Well say for the Malcolm Blight Open Mike there was the 30 min version & an extended version which was about 50 mins long. However I don't have Fox so I don't know whether that full version was ever shown on Fox or is just available on the internet. Nor do I know whether any other episodes have an extended version.

Probably poor terminology by me, I supposed what I'm wondering is will any of the "unused" footage from the Rex interview (and others) will be viewable at some stage.

It wasn't the finest 'Open Mike', but still riveting TV.

There was far too much discussion with Rex about the off-field affairs, fights and his flaws. Yet some of his other controversies - the footy-related ones - went unmentioned.

Why didn't he get along with Bill Jacobs? Why was he so scathing of Geelong? (He hated his time there - always alleged there wasn't a win-at-all-costs mentality in the 70s).

I'd also like to have heard more about his start with VFA broadcasting in the early 1980s and his thoughts on the best games he'd called/played in/seen.

Together, Rex Hunt and Graham Bond probably saw more AFL football in the 1990s and 2000s than any other pair. Their thoughts on that era deserve to be heard.

Fox Footy showed the full hour-long version of Malcolm Blight's interview. They advertised it the time, alongside the standard 30 minute version.

I think it's still the only 'Open Mike' that has been extended and shown.

In previous years they had the hour long shows for Blight, Aker, Matthews, Williams, and a couple of others. This year though they haven't done any hour long shows.
In my view they should all be an hour.

This was one that I actually didn't like that much.

For someone who says that he's in a really good place with his life now and he's over the limelight of the footy that he had in his prime with his commentating and the whole channel Rex thing, he seemed to still like talking about the adulation and respect that he receives when he walks into places.

He came across to me as a punch drunk boxer who keeps retiring and then coming back because he can't live without the adulation.

That's just me though.

when Healy said on 360 that Scarlett was the most watched i was sure they would show the hour of him.

is that the only thing? i know it was hypocritical but i've barely heard anything else

I suppose its OK to lecture on radio ( when you are a sports commentator) about morality, while you have a mistress who you pay $1000 a week.

Excellent post.

Issues that interested me very much. And I wanted to hear, how Sport927, declined his pilot for Rex's fishing world.
