Open Training - Good Friday

Good Friday is easily the most boring day of the year, whether Collingwood train or not. I also fail to see why the Good Friday appeal is seen as such a big deal, giving money to a hospital that already receives money through taxation. There are people much worse off in overseas' countries that are more in need of money than a childrens' hospital which has just been moved into plush new buildings. Not to mention the fact that one TV channel devotes much of its programming on an already dull viewing day to showing half-baked celebrities personning phones in a studio.

When is the AFL going to wake up and hold a Crucifiction Cup on Good Friday, which could be followed up on the Monday by the Resurrection Cup? Enough of Good Friday boredom.

IMO if the money raised from the Good Friday appeal is enough to save just one of the children that visits that hospital then it is worth it.....

I like the idea of the Friday and Monday matches though :thumbsu:

Really though? Would it really be worth it? I would suggest that if everyone who contributed either cash or gifts in kind (i.e. network coverage for a day) knew that it would result in only one saved life per year, they wouldn't do it.

Very righteous statement though, Scodog.

What if, and this is likely, for the one child saved by a day full of donations, you could save 10 3rd world kiddies? Would you still save the one childrens' hospital kiddie and let the 10 overseas' kids die?

I once dated a chick that worked in pediatrics at the royal children's and some of the stories she told me just break your heart. So I for one would still donate but if others felt differently that's fair enough.

MMD let me ask you this if that one child was your's what would you prefer, your 6 month old or 10 third world children? It's terrible that more isn't done for those less fortunate but we still need to make sure we care for our own as best we can first.

You know the hospital does actual do operations, for no cost, for such third world kiddies?

You do know that just with gov funding it would mean bed closures and research closures within the hospital?

You do know that the hospital is regarded as a country and world leader is paediatrics? Without the appeal this would no longer be the case....

Of course if any of your kids get sick you can just then to a standard hospital on principle, save the best of the best for those willing to respect that fact. Oh that's horrible and of course you want the best for your kids? Go figure.....

We are a rich country. We can afford to pay taxes sufficient to fund all our hospitals without having to rely on charity year after year. Whatever funding the children's hospital gets is far more in relative terms than is the case in a third world country. We live in a country that gives less than half a percent of GDP in aid.

I also find your last remark a bit offensive. Perhaps you mean that the more I post, the more you realise that you do not agree with me. You should quote me more precisely. I did not say that the hospital receives 'more than enough'. Rather, I simply said that it receives tax money. There is a significant difference between what you say I said and what I actually said.

Are you willing to pay more taxes to fund hospitals?

So you are trying to tell me that without the Good friday appeal my child would die! In the richest country in the world, too. What nonsense.

Offensive?

I find your remarks on the status of something you clearly don't understand offensive and idiotic as well.

Surely anyone who finds Good Friday boring will go into work tomorrow and work and not at Holiday rates?

Those that whinge about no football ignore the fact there are 2 extra days of football this weekend so they are still better off

If you cant go through life where 1 whole day a year is football free and people help out other people for that 1 day then thats your life

As for this petty fight over who deserves our charity more? People support what they want to support and do so in the best way they can help, if you prefer to support kids overseas then fine, but dont whinge about people 1 day of the year choosing to support kids at home first.

The game or the money? Nth Melbourne is half crucified already.

Giving them the money straight up would save a lot of hassle, but I doubt the Children's Appeal would be as popular if people knew the money was going to Norf.

I meant the Good Friday game :) They haven't got any blockbusters to speak of and this would undoubtedly be one if they got it. Plus, as their fans insist on reminding us constantly on this site, they were the pioneers of Friday night football after all, who better to have the Good Friday game?

No I'm trying to tell you to put yourself in the shoes of those parents that practically live in that hospital while their children receive treatment for an ailment that they may well die from.

You'll argue the toss over anything so I won't bother trying to have a reasoned and informed discussion any further with you.

Also my apologies for dragging the thread away from what it was initially intended for!!

I believe in people paying as much tax as is required to provide good to excellent services. I do not believe that money for public hospitals should have to be raised by charity. My cousin's 2 year old child is having a foot amputation in the hospital today and my cousin is staying in the new accomodations.

Putting myself in the shoes of these parents is not going to change my mind. Yes I do believe that the appeal on ch 7 that goes all day from memory makes for very boring viewing on a dull day. My point is that if we were taxed at a higher rate to fund a top class medical service these appeals would not be necessary. And we should be doing a lot more than we are for people who do not have the same level of care in their country as we do in our country.
