The Giants wanted it more than us. We had a few games like that last year, particularly towards the end of the year.

You only need to be a little bit off, particularly against a good side like Giants.

I'd be very surprised if we didn't make a statement this week. Hopefully Howe comes back this week, which will obviously help out with some of our defence problems from last week.

Remember that game well. Tony Francis got 6 weeks? from a kicking charge as well.

Heard someone say only 2 teams in 100 years have won the flag after losing the first 2 games of the season. If true, Friday night is a huge match for us.
Stats like that mean nothing. Last year they said the same about teams losing as many games as we did at the end of the year.

I didn't watch on The Couch, but any footage showing lack of effort will be rammed down their throats this week.

We really need to work on improving our relatively poor goal kicking accuracy - it just ain’t good enough. It very nearly catastrophically cost us the GF - we should’ve won that game comfortably by several goals - and our inaccuracy, especially missing those set shots in the third quarter, really stopped us getting back into the game.

Our goal kicking was generally very good last year. Every team has some games where they are wasteful.

Something that happened to another team 100 years ago has no bearing on the future.

Very true. Thee's always exceptions, back end of last year we were copping a bit more pressure, less easy goals after breaking sides, and in the Grand Final we actually kicked badly but overall you're completely right, we have become one of the more skilled sides and our blokes are happy to attempt difficult kicks and execute them pretty well.

True but its a fair indication a club has troubles if they string 2 loses together any time in the season, and (just guessing here) maybe being 0-2 stresses players a bit?

It was quite shocking when we lost two in a row (not the first two games obv) last year vs Carlton and Hawthorn, quite a blip. Credit to Fly he work us out of the hole vs a very tough Geelong side after those losses.

AFL STATEMENT – MASON COX

The AFL has completed its inquiries in relation to Mason Cox’s conduct prior to the commencement of the Opening Round AFL Match between GWS GIANTS and Collingwood at Engie Stadium.

After receiving a statement from Collingwood and Mason, speaking with the umpire and reviewing the vision, whilst the umpire did agree to another bounce as requested by Cox, it nevertheless should have been plainly apparent to Cox that GWS Coach Mumford and multiple GWS players had congregated in the centre circle by the time the relevant bounce occurred.

Noting Cox’s contrition and the Club’s commitment in supporting him to be more aware in the future, the AFL has determined to issue a reprimand to Cox and take no further action.

It is important that all players conduct themselves professionally particularly during breaks and in the periods prior to and following matches.

Who was Lyon referring to?
“There were just some things you looked at (against GWS) and you go ‘well, they probably didn’t handle it as well as they would’ve liked when they look back at it’,” Lyon started on Fox Footy’s On the Couch on Monday evening.

First, Lyon pointed to an example deep in Collingwood’s defensive half when skipper Darcy Moore elected to leave his direct opponent to impact the contest.

He noted that while the instinct is a part of Moore’s stellar repertoire, he doesn’t then have the credibility to challenge his back-six teammates when they take similar risks.

“Darcy Moore’s the captain. Now, this is not new for Darcy, but how do you go and then lead the team into this situation where (Isaac) Quaynor has got (Aaron) Cadman and he just lets him go?” Lyon asked.

“Cadman cruises up, Quaynor stays back in the goal square, Cadman sits there — (you’ve) got two guarding the goal square and none guarding Cadman, and Darcy Moore would be going ‘how can I pull you up when I’m playing two metres on the back of Jesse Hogan?’ So, (it’s) these little things, you know?”

Next, Lyon cited a transition defence passage where superstars Jordan De Goey and Nick Daicos were caught ball-watching in the third term.

The duo failed to track prolific GWS midfielder Josh Kelly, who wound up taking an uncontested mark inside 50 for a set shot at goal.

“Then you look at this — you see De Goey and Daicos. Not once have they turned their head, not once did they turn their head to look at Josh Kelly — (they) still haven’t looked at him. Bang (he takes the mark). Third quarter, all over.”

Later, Lyon highlighted another example of lazy defensive running — this time star forward Jamie Elliott was the culprit in question.

“Look at Jamie Elliott here, look at the chase — or the non-chase. (He) doesn’t want to get involved,” said Lyon.

Elliott neglected to run with a streaming Harry Himmelberg exiting defence, which started a domino effect of Pies defenders flooding to the ball — resulting in an uncontested mark inside 50 for the Giants.

“(That happened) because Jamie Elliott just couldn’t be bothered, (he) just didn’t want to run.”

Wasn't "plainly apparent" to the umpire cos he agreed to another bounce and he in fact had line of sight of the GWS players approaching, whereas, poor Coxy had his back to the orange brigade.

Furthermore, if you look at the vision, Mumford looks at Cox (as he's about to jump) and moves himself into his path and DIRECTLY (knowingly & willingly) causes the contact. Now, if Cox lands awkwardly & injures himself as a result of the contact, what responsibility lays with a "coach"?

Why the f*ck has Mumford and GWS not being given a pls f'kn explain .. w@nker$?

According to the stats bloke on SEN it was only inaccurate goal kicking that cost us the game. All other stats predicted a Pies win.
His message- don’t panic
Agree. 18.5 is ridiculously accurate from the Giants. DeGoey seemed off and the backline missing Howe and Murphy against that Giant (haha) forward line was always going to be an uphill battle.
