As we all know the 2018 afl draft is being predicted as a super draft and as someone who follows it reasonably close that definately sounds on the money.

Obviously we have two sa players in lukosius and rankine who will go very high and there are a couple other sa boys who could feature in the first round. We currently have two 2018 first round picks and carltons 2018 2nd round pick which if carlton have an average year could be a pick just outside the 1st round.

What strategies do people think we will use for this draft. Will we just go in with two first round picks? Will we bundle these two picks for a higher pick? Will we look to off load a reasonable player with a mix of other draft picks to get another higher first round pick and if so which players would be looked at? Eg atkins, talia etc.

I know this is very early to be talking about next years draft but i think apart from the first 15 or so players in this years draft it is a pretty average draft.

I mentioned elsewhere that with the second edwards available to us in 2019 (i'm pretty sure but not certain) and likely a early first rounder, in next years trade period we might trade our 2019 first rounder for a third 2018 first rounder. There are all sorts of permutations possible after that, packaging to get right up top end, just take the 3 picks and everything in between.

I think they'lm decide upon what they do based in where Haggis sees people falling. This is likely to be decided not long before trade week.

The forethought is good, but there is a shit tonne of water to go under the bridge

I would be assessing the players of value and determining if they are going to improve or never improve. Atkins is one I would be assessing strongly. He still has value ( 10 Brownlow votes) but is flaky ( to me) . Sloane as UFA is a walk ( if he chooses) but he may look to help the club. If , big if, we target J McGovern and he pre-commits do we then look to offload Hartigan while his price is reasonable? ie Hartigan and Atkins for a top 10 pick?

I would be strategising 2 picks inside the top 10 for next year

Rankine and Lukosius will go top 5 and Rozee Top 10 , there is no way we will get these guys as our two first rounders will not be top 10 unless Melbourne and Us bomb out which won’t happen . I don’t see us having as good year next year as Smith is a big loss and we don’t have any creative players in our backline . They are all stoppers . As good as Kelly played this year he would have been one I’d traded as with Doedee coming in who is also a stopper we will lack any run . Perhaps he is one we can trade next year for more picks in the Super draft

I know talia is a very good defender one on one but he offers us nothing offensively. Not that i would want to trade him but if a top 5 pick was offered next year for him i would be very interested. We already have hartigan and keath is coming on fast.

I agree with you here , he really looks to be slowing down and is only 25 . He could not go with Riewoldt in the GF , was so far behind him and is so flat footed when he runs and kicking is not a strength of his

Are you 2 joking? He is one of our top 5.

If you trade out Talia, you may as well stsrt to trade out anyone obver 24 - Sloane, Tex, Sauce, Smith. Then you have currency for a few top 5 picks, but we enter Carlton territory and start the climb again.

Atkins, Kelly, Milera - yep, use these as upgrades to out 2 x 1sts but ultimately the flag is there for the taking

I'm hoping Gold Coast finish around 3rd bottom. They will be in rebuild. A spread of firsts might be more appealing to them than another single high pick (coughed up pick 2 this year without a whimper).

We bundle our 1st rounders for pick 3.

Gets us Rankine or Lukosius

Will be interesting to see what happens. So many kids touted as top 5 certainties in their underage year slide down in their draft year due to a mixture of injuries, poor form and the improvement of other kids around them. I can see us having pick 12 (Melbourne), pick 15 (Adelaide) and pick 21 (carlton). 12 and 15 bundled together could get us near a top 5 pick.

Hopefully Sloane stays but if he goes we'd need to match an offer and get a great trade in order to convert him into lukocius or rankine.

Cant see too many clubs giving up top 5 picks for a couple of picks in the teens

The only way to get a top 5 pick is if Sloane leaves or we finish bottom 5 or Melbourne finishes bottom 5

A lot of people are very harsh on Atkins. Don't get me wrong I haven't got my head in the sand about his deficiencies either, but Rats the kind of guy that people often fall into the trap of thinking he's been playing for 5+ years. However he's only played 57 games, and is still probably 2 full seasons away from approaching his ceiling.

I don't know if that flakyness is something that can be trained out of him, but i'll be interested to see how he looks when he reaches that 80-150 game part of his career. Would hate to put all this work into him and then see him turn into one of the better outside mids in the league playing for someone else.

I agree, our strategy should be to target Queenslanders with our late drafts, back the club to develop them and cash them in for high draft picks, or returned SA boys - Rankine/ Lukosius who will be at Brisbane/ Gold Coast next year.

Do agree he can be anything. I would make a decision after next year. It's more the value he has to help get higher in the draft.

You can also do a Vince trade. Trade to a lower club where his impact on a teams ladder position is not so hurtful.

In the same way Hawthorn do

exactly what I'm thinking, fingers crossed hey.

only problem might be that they'll no doubt be looking for good players in the 24-27 age bracket too I would think.

Our best chance as things stand for a top 10 pick is the HAwks who have 7 and 25 (based on this year) who may switch for 10 and 17.

Would one of Rankine or Lucokius be there at 7?

The amount of talk-up about Rankine and Lucokius is amazing,. I can't remember another year where there was so much chatter about 2 blokes over 12 months before they are even eligible to be drafted! I mean,. it's been going on for months already!

God help them both if they aren't the kind of guys that can happen a bit of media pressure!

Sloane will be an unrestricted free agent, so we won’t have an opportunity to match if he decides to leave.
