The amount of talk-up about Rankine and Lucokius is amazing,. I can't remember another year where there was so much chatter about 2 blokes over 12 months before they are even eligible to be drafted! I mean,. it's been going on for months already!

God help them both if they aren't the kind of guys that can happen a bit of media pressure!

On grand final day the under 17s best in the country played at skilled in a little gimmy match with Brad Johnson and I think it was Corey Enright coaching both teams.

Rankine dominated and so was his team, they switched Rankine to the other team at half time and he instigated a come back but they came up short. Rankine won BOG.

If they have a pick below us - which they will, unless Melbourne tank it up - Port will probably take him.

Sounds like it's Lukosius for us

Um, Port will finish above Melbourne making Melbournes pick before Port..

That's without the fact Lukosius and Rankine both likely to be top 5 picks and all 3 clubs to be in the top 8 (Picks 11-18).

Get Rankine and Lucokius to absolutely throw next season. Lazy, uninterested, terrible attitude, fake injuries, bomb interviews, miss training sessions, miss meetings, miss games......whatever.

Then come next draft we pick them with our two first rounders and off a sudden they end up being best out of that draft and we walk away laughing, rebuilding the list iin just about 1 draft

I know talia is a very good defender one on one but he offers us nothing offensively. Not that i would want to trade him but if a top 5 pick was offered next year for him i would be very interested. We already have hartigan and keath is coming on fast.

If we trade Talia we are a soulless club. Think back to his B&F speech - he is a bloke you want in your club

As talented as Rankine is, there's a possibility he could drop a bit next year. SPS was the undoubted #1 pick coming into his 18th year, but ended up going pick 6(?). Still arguably one of, if not the most talented player from that draft class. Same with Lukosius - look how highly rated Brander and Ballenden were

But at this stage, we're not getting them

Similar to Fogarty at the start of the year, no? Heaps of people were on board the 'Fogarty for pick 1' train, even the Vic's.

Yes different playing styles, but still. To almost be an indelible #1 a year out means there is some serious talent to work with.

Not that similar

Rankine playing v well at national champs level and sanfl league level as well as dominating U17 futures all stars game to point they made him change teams to even up the contest and it worked

Not all hyped up Pick 1st are equal

I think some people in here might be getting things wrong way around

It's not just the top end of the 2018 draft that is stand out , it's the depth to about pick 30 ( already ) ie U17s that have shown plenty already in U18s champs

3 picks from 10-25 will net 3 VERY good players and IMO worth more than one player in top 5

I dont watch a ton of youth footy, but have watched highlights of kids leading up to the draft for the last 10-15 years and never been as impressed in 2 minutes of footage as what i was with this kid.

Luke Valente happens to be a Crows fan. Wonder if he's an option in the 2nd round? (Not because of that reason, just as a bonus)

I agree.

As mentioned elsewhere in the thread often the mix of players rated in the top 5 in the U17 year changes dramatically 12 months later.

So how will people react if we put all our eggs into the Rankine basket? We have two first rounders and an early second in the 2018 draft ... if we package them up (maybe with a player) could we get into the top 3?

Or are we better to just take 3 really good picks to the draft and let the Rankine / Lucokius train head elsewhere?

I know how hard it will be to watch those two play elsewhere, but are we selling an otherwise really good set of picks for the hope that we nail the one superstar of the comp? Some will say "let them go and get them back in 3 years" but it doesn't work that way when you like being one of the best players in the league and are tied to a club that either is a big VIC club or a club that gets extra help from the AFL ... whoever gets these guys will "look after" them and they probably won't want to move back to SA.

Looks impressive, but with a lot of that in close stuff, you have to wonder if he’ll be able to do that at AFL level. Some pretty weak tackle attempts there.
