I feel like we shouldn't be chasing players that are going to create a bidding war (such as Patton). For the price of Patton we could get good value out of Ben Reid and Frawley who both are KPP sized and can take marks. Reid can play CHF well and Frawley is quality, allowing one of our big backs forward or even himself.

Thoughts people?

You're worried about Patton creating a bidding war but suggest Frawley instead? At this stage Frawley looks subject to be one of the biggest FA bidding wars given the number of teams that need a KPD, his ability and his age (only 26).

I like the idea of Frawley to stop gap our aging backmen but I'm not sure about throwing someone forward. I winder with both Martin and Moloney here if Frawley might see Brisbane as a more attractive target. How old is he?

Not sure about throwing a back man forward though. I'd like to see a natural goal seeking forward but agree that maybe chasing Patton, while a nice dream, may not give us the best bang for buck.

I had a look at game stats for guys like Franklin, Roughead & (Jack) Riewoldt. Common to all was that they spent the first couple of years getting a few games into them (30+) and getting returns of only about a goal a game, before hitting their straps in their third or fourth season. They were all about 20/21 years old when this occurred. I reckon that if Close and Freeman are going to make it we need to start getting some senior games into them now.
But...but we have Brown...

I agree that we should be playing Close at every single opportunity especially since brown is toasted

Most key forwards don't leave there club if they are clearly best 22. We should be in Pattons ear all season and tell him we have a spot all for him. He is a beast and will be a great FF IMO. Probably won't be better than Boyd or Jezza but he will still be a gun. Would be hard prying him from the giants though as their future looks a lot brighter than he lions

I think Patton will come at a greater expense.

Point is we need one of them, being a ready-made quality player. We haven't done that since getting Fev and Staker.

I like what Close offers and want to see him get more games (along with the potential of Freeman and Paine - and if that isn't the best buddy cop duo names since Murtough and Riggs I don't know what is).

Patton may think that he is 3rd fiddle behind Cameron and Boyd. No room for 3 big men and if he came up here he would be the star of the team basically.

So Dadsey is not up to it? Seems to be getting no love. I have only seen him on the telie (3 games I think). Late developer who has the abilty to take a contested mark. I know he has played mainly as a tall defender in his senior games. Any particular reason no one is mentioning him as a potential tall forward back up ruck?

He seems like, at best, he'll be a back up ruck that can be handy up forward. The discussions here have generally been about getting a true spearhead forward and I really don't see Michael getting that role at this stage.

Personally I think this statement is a fallacy and something we're probably all trying to use to convince ourselves that one of them will want out. If your 3 big men are all the quality of those three then there will always be room for all of them in the one side. They're going to be playing in a very successful team in another year or two and kicking goals rotating on the 3rd best tall (probably kicking goals on the best and second too on the end of their midfield)

Its most likely going to come down to dollars. We've got cap space now but as the age profile of our list increases that cap space will dwindle a bit. However we'll most likely have decent money to go after one of them. At the end of the day we'll either have to throw more than whatever Melb team will be down the table and splashing cash around at the time, or looking like an attractive option to go to. There's a lot of work to go on the second while the first is largely an unknown.

Plenty of love I think, but he needs to step up a bit to succeed. He's big enough to make a successful ruckman, especially as he's likely to fill out a bit more yet and could be a real monster.

I still see his best chance as a KPD - his size would be an asset against the increasingly tall KPFs around the place, and although he's looked a little slow in his senior appearances to date, he has good endurance and can contest a mark.

The real question is how have we got into this position when the club has known Brown is on the way out for a number of years.

Here's the decent KPFs that have changed teams (kinda) over the last couple of years (I've excluded the likes of Lisle, Dawes, Q. Lynch, Adelaide's Tom Lynch, Jesse White and the Irish kid):

Fev. Personal disaster.
Clark. Walked out.
Hogan. Outbid by a team so awful they had picks coming out of their arse.
Tippett. Outbid by a team with 10% more cash than us.
Franklin. Outbid by a team with 10% more cash than us and a disregard for the next nine years.

We had our names in the ring for every one of them except Dawes and Lynch. We can't wave a magic wand and make them want to come to us, wave up more cash, or wave up earlier/more draft picks. The only ones recently drafted that we passed over were Tomlinson (not really a KPF), Jaksch (got Mayes intead) and Lynch (took Polec instead). I'd grant GC's Lynch a miss, but that's only 12.5% that were actually in our control.

Especially when two of them (Cameron and Patton) move like flankers and the third can take stints in the ruck.

I'd love to be in a position where I had to come up with a game plan to make this work.

Pretty sure we even tried to get Dawes. Just goes to prove how desperate the club has been. They've been trying, but circumstance has constantly been against us. Surely that changes soon?

We were rumoured to be doing so, everywhere, often, in the media that trade period, but Kerr's write-up of that year dismissed that fairly specifically.

A number of names were linked to the club during the trade period and I can provide readers with the following information. The only players we seriously considered were Stefan Martin, Luke Delaney and Jesse White.

Sam Reid is the player we should seriously go after. Right age and circumstances at his club for us to pounce. I'd bite the bullet and offer him a front ended 800k/year deal over 5 years, number 1 KPF role and a gun midfield to supply him 600 odd goals for the next 10 years. I am aware that he recently signed a 5 year deal with the swans, but that doesn't mean much other than us having to trade for him and him agreeing on an upgraded deal. Going off everyone's prediction of us finishing outside the top 8, Syd might be open to trading him for our pick 5-8 we will have.

Is he really that good tho to offer him our top pick/.

Yeah that would be a real head scratcher.

"hhmmm what do you think our game plan should be?"

"how about we just kick it into our forward line any way we can and watch our 3 kpf mark and kick goals"

"what if they don't mark it"

"no worries the other one will just swoop on the loose ball, pick it up, evade a defender and snap it through for a goal"

"sounds good, who do we have to thank for this?"

I would take Patton instead.

Failing that Operation Hot Mother could be a complete failure.

Well looking at a few of the early mock draft's, apparently there could be up to 5 KPP's taken in the top 10, so maybe Reid wouldn't be worth the top 10 pick this year. So if we can get a quality KPF in this years draft with our 1st pick I am cool with that, but I would argue we are at least one gun KPF away from being a serious top 8 contender right now.
So right now, I would trade a pick 7-10 for Reid. Bite the bullet I guess you would call it and pay a little overs for a real list deficiency. Reid is without a doubt a quality KPF; best hands at the Swans IMO and would be our 60+ goals a season tall forward that we desperately crave.
