Id rather try our luck in the draft.

With the academy selections we may not even have our first pick to use on one of the apparent gun KPF. Depending on how the year goes for Hammelman and Dawson. Currently most of the reading I have done have them both in late first round picks and if clubs plan on keeping us honest they would bet a first round one at least one of them. (Judging if the draft was held tomorrow they may fall off or rise depending on how they play) Just another variable I think is important in this scenario

Would we even want Hammelman?
Is he the best available KPF that we can get for our pick we have to think.
Not just that we have to take into account. You would think that the club would be trying to endorse the Academy as much as possible. As well as trying to bring in as much home grown talent as possible. Leaving him to go to another club would not present a good image. Especially as we have so many issues with homesickness/attracting players.

We can't draft him purely on the basis that he is a Qlder. Sure we want to endorse the academy, but to pick a good KPF over a gun KPF (not saying that is happening) is not smart for our club. Let the GCS endorse the academy.

Hyperthetical guys

Would you give up Jack Redden + first rounder for Johnathan Patton ?

That is even underselling 'the General' short still.
Can't agree with that. Redden is a quality mid who would feature in most clubs best 22 IMO. He is proven, good age bracket and still improving. Patton is unproven yet. I would have thought 1st round plus a player (not sure who, maybe a Merret)

But this is just it. Patton is a mature aged (remember he is now 21) Key position, power forward who has shown he can play at the highest level. Your not getting away with paying with a middle tier KPP and a high draft pick. You will need to give up something of extremely high value, especially for a player as valuable as Patton to an opposition club.

Just realised you are from Essendon.

Didn't ralise he is 21. I doubt GWS would part with him this coming year anyway.

That's the type of trade I'd expect would have to be done, which is why I think Patton would be off the table. We wouldn't give that up for Tippett, who had more runs on the board.

Miranda Kerr is a hot mother, and recently single.

Any chance we can convince her to the club and then offer her to Patton??

:)

Would have thought, NO ONE was off limits, every one has there price.

I agree with you mate, he seems a very, very good prospect, almost Johnathan Brown like, the way he runs and jumps at the ball for a kid so young.

Except that we now know the collateral damage of shopping blokes around just to try and land the big fish.

But offering just pick 5 (pretending that's best case scenario trade wise for us) wouldn't get us Patton. What would you offer GWS to get the trade done?
It's a long season we might be able to offer them 3 yet. Failing that two high picks would probably get us there.

The trouble with relying on kids from the academy is that it will take them 3-4 years before they really make the grade and at that point our midfield will have peaked. So we need somebody to stand up now, or get somebody who can.

Patton to me is the most likely, Reid is a potential.

How about one from left field Jack Reiwoldt. Not a happy chappy at tigerland. Just jokes.

To be fair, the mental strength of some of todays kids is pretty poor. (not saying just at Brisbane but in general).

Put in the hard yards and these kids will reap the rewards, instead its easier to run away (and move back home).

Not thinking of last year so much.

Patton seems like pie in the sky stuff right now. He's worked his way into the first 22 of a team that seems destined to win at least one premiership over the next ten years. He probably wouldn't want to move at any price.

But I agree that we should be pro-active at trying to pinch some of the Giants' kids. I don't really know anything about Jaksch, but Tomlinson and Frost seem destined to be bit players in that team and they've both been impressive in patches. In other parts of the ground, Buntine, O'Rourke and Sumner all seem to be coming from a fair way back and would be worth a shot.

Unfortunately most of these guys are Victorians and their first preference won't be Queensland. There'll be a lot of talented kids leaving GWS in the next couple of years and we need to get in early and make our pitch.

Yeah, if players choose to leave GWS, it would be for one or a combination of 3 factors - the desire to get home, money or opportunity. We obviously can't offer the first but the last two are firmly within our control.

Hoskin-Eliott is an interesting one. His development seems to have been a bit patchy to date but his raw athleticism is very exciting.
