Playing career: 119 games. 237 goals. 2 times All Australian. 1966 Premiership captain.

Coaching career: 18 wins. 44 losses.

If Barry Breen does not kick that behind Baldock is not elevated.

Is Darrel Baldock the worst Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend of all time?

So you're arguing that nothing outside the VFL/AFL counts?

Champion Data rated him elite, and that's all that matters.

The criteria for elevation to legend status includes only playing and coaching records to be taken into account and not a candidate’s overall contribution to the game outside of playing and coaching.

Cannot really add much more for him outside of the NWFU with La Trobe.

Can you name a worse Australian football hall of fame legend?

You mean the 4 consecutive premierships as captain coach? It's not a bad achievement.

In an amateur team in a small local league in a small state. You are setting the bar pretty damn low for "legend" status in the Australian football hall of fame.

    Will ask the same question.

Can you name a worse Australian football hall of fame legend?

It is not so much about potting Baldock. It is about his onfield and coaching feats not quite being up there with the other legends.

I'm old enough to have seen Doc play - take your data, digitise it, and deposit it appropriately.

Anyone relying on Stats are clearly uninformed.

The relevance of AA from that area is very limited as it was selected purely from the carnival and Baldock was selected in 1961 and 1966, with no carnival (or AA team) in between. There were only 3 AA teams during the 60s.

Baldock was simply a superb footballer that the OP never saw play.

Stats aren't the whole story - Gary Ablett is a prime example of that.

The best player Tassie has ever produced, which makes your argument silly considering he’s not the only AFL Legend from Tassie.

Yes, the Doc was better than Hudson, Hart and Stewart.

It's actually a pretty underwhelming record.

I really don't see the point of the HoF or 'Legend' status though. It's just an arbitrary wankfest like the AA team. Pointless.

+1 with you about the AA team. I snicker to myself when I see hundreds of pages of furious debate every year on this site over who should be in or out of the AA side when it's just an honourary team that doesn't even play.

Is this when they were giving out AA's every 4 years?

Leigh Matthews has only one of them.

    Shocking thread.

In my opinion one of Port Adelaide's top 3 players of all time by impact on field was Harold Oliver. Yet he only played 107 games.

It's easier to compare players today with stats because there are stats on just about every action on the field.

Back in those days it was goals and games and even then they weren't recorded very accurately.

That is nice and all. Would you like to name another hall of fame legend that Baldock was better than?

In terms of resume compared to his fellow legends, yeah, probably.

But considering ‘Legend’ status itself is pretty rubbery and he achieved the 1-in-200-years feat of captaining a St Kilda premiership, sure chuck him in there.

I never saw Royce Hart play but his stats don’t seem like a hall of fame legend.

    187 games 369 goals
    1 All Australian
    2 Best and Fairest
    Twice leading goal kicker

Coaching record of 8 wins and 45 losses with Footscray as well.

You did neglect mention the 4 premierships.

You obviously never saw Baldock play!

Tas. in Baldock's era was competitive against Vic, WA, & SA, & famously defeated Vic. in 1960 (without Baldock, who was injured). When Tas. def. WA in 1970, Baldock was one of their best. He was arguably Tas. greatest ever player in the modern era. Due to incompetence & lack of an AFL team/proper pathways, Tas. AF is now a Disaster.
Many historians would probably argue only Laurie Nash (a freak, who liked to "show-off" & kick torpedoes on his non-preferred left foot -the only player ever to do this; & regularly did sideways hangers -also the only player ever to do these regularly) was the best Tas.player; & probably the greatest of all time from anywhere!

St K supporters who saw Baldock play are almost unanimous in declaring he was the best St K player they ever saw -inc. the modern era up to 2017; & St K had multiple Brownlow winners in Baldock's era (Howell, Smith, & Stewart-2). Baldock was Brownlow Runner-Up twice. He was B&F from 1962-3, & 65. Club captain 1963-68, & top goal kicker 1962-65.
His ball handling ability was, arguably, the greatest (with Nash) we have ever seen. At St K training, he liked sometimes to do laps, bouncing the ball with his NP left hand only -& catching it only with his left hand, rarely losing it.

The Encyclopedia Of League Footballers (which covers every VFL/AFL player since 1897) states re Baldock"...he quickly established a reputation as a freakish champion with the seeming ability to have the ball on a string. His ground skills were phenomenal and his courage legendary. Although short, 177cm, he played at CHF (similar to Nash, 175cm, who kicked 18 goals in 3 qtrs against SA in a State game -my words) and controlled the St K forward line".
St K supporters would marvel at how the short Baldock would regularly beat convincingly much taller defenders.
