This worries me as well. We’re all convinced we still have another gear or two to go, but what if we don’t? What if this is the best we’re going to be this year? I have faith in the fitness staff but it almost feels too early. I kind of want to lose a game between now and September, just to keep the players honest and not complacent.
Just keep this attitude and we'll be fine.

How ****'ed is the AFL when it would consider introducing radical changes to the laws of the game ie zones without any serious long term trialling, consultation or lead time so that clubs could have some time to prepare and adjust to these significant changes ?

"Hey ! Let's have zones ! Yeah ok...let's bring it in next year, straight away." Ffs....what sport operates like this ?

And what about the fans ? How do you just introduce such significant change, almost at a whim, giving zero regard to the people who have watched the game being played for so long without such wide ranging laws.

I can handle some change but the way the AFL goes about things is typically hasty reaction, ill conceived and almost always has people howling after. Look at the way they apply the existing rules and interpretation thereof. Ffs....every year we have controversy over a rule or interpretation because the AFL changes the way it wants the game to be adjudicated. They go over the top with everything. This year it's the protected zone. Previous years it was arm chopping, or some other short term focus.

AFL is the most reactionary, over the top, constantly interfered with sport in the world. It's ***** tiring and I reckon people are getting sick of it. Nobody knows what the hell they are watching from one moment to the next.

Yeah Zones will change AFL footy irrevocably...
Possibly have more breaks and longer to fit in the tv advertisements...
Possibly make the maggotts the defacto stars of this new form of AFL footy in regards to rulings on frees...
With more controversial frees paid the media generate more coverage of this new form of AFL footy...
All the media nobs give their opinion as to what's wrong with the game...
And the cycle restarts again...controversy...hysteria...agendas..."it's not working we need to change the rules"...
Their is a vast media industry/circus out there that needs to justify it's existence and pay packets...
And it's all feeding of the carcass off AFL footy and the public...
The game really is incidental to the machinations and agendas of the money makers...

They could fix all if the problems with the game by simplifying the rules and not worry about introducing zones;

Can’t have two players on the mark (I mean two different players) - gets rid of the stupid 10 meter protected area farce. Also the man on the mark can’t move once there.

Get rid of prior opportunity - my pet hate

Pay incorrect disposal irrespective of the ball being knocked out of a tackle

Get rid of score reviews - don’t have the capability to adjudicate it competently

Enforce blocking free kicks more regularly.

Hands in the back is hands in the back. If a player tackles legally and the ball carrier falls forward without being “pushed” ie no hands in the back its HTB if the ball is not disposed of legally.

Sliding rule - if they must have this in then no diving on the pill. Can’t pick the ball up unless both feet are on the ground (can knock on, knock from oppositions possession etc). I hate the rule but I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

Philosophy - the umpires have been clearly told to pay more free kicks introducing more inconsistency from ump to ump and game to game. The umpiring philosophy should be less is more, only the obvious free kicks paid and an emphasis on not paying incidental contact

Overall umpire competence. Game is too hard to umpire, should be made simpler, change of philosophy and umps made full time.

These are just some things the afl can do within the existing rules framwework without the need to add “more”. These should be trialled first IMO before any introduction of zones.

Best rule change...?!?
Every ball up around the ground has a 5m exclusion zone from all players only 4 players contest the ball-up...two each side...
Why have a ball-up/bounce of the ball in the middle of a pack of players surrounding the umpire...?!? ad naseum...rise and repeat...

The afl should make a secondary AFLX league that plays exactly like the whingers want - lots of goals, lots of ads, random ad breaks to increase tension.
Like survivor. All the players (or fans or a combination of both) from the proper league can vote the annoying/whinging players out to AFLX island. They can do it at the same time as the draft. I’d probably watch that

Problem is the media and football community got so used to Geelong, Hawthorn and Sydney winning for 10 years and their styles that as soon as two new clubs come along and win with different styles that the whinging has started.

Does anyone think the whinging about the state of the game would be happening if the driving forces behind it had won in 2016 and 2017, no one was whinging in 2013/14/15 were they when clarkos cluster was in full force.

Yeah. And the ironic thing is that us (and Bumwood this year who are currently 2nd on the ladder) play the most attractive and decent scoring style of play in the competition.

If the AFL wasnt so over reactionary, and all these sensationalist media people weren't so attention seeking, then they'd just let the game be because the other 16 or so teams will quickly realise that the Richmond style of play i.e. with long hand balls to outside riders and overlappers is the way to beat congestion and all these stoppages.

We are last for clearances perhaps proving that you don't need all the time 16 players within 10 feet of the ball and winning as many clearances as you can as a result.

Article on afl.com.au:
“BRISBANE players are now convinced their best footy can match the competition's cream.

Following successive wins over Fremantle and Carlton, the Lions have the perfect chance to valida their form on Saturday when they play Hawthorn at its Launceston fortress.”

Lmao beating Fremantle and Carlton convinces them they can match the cream :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:
