Re: Oprah Winfrey

The only thing I care about is how embarassing this is to see. People breaking down over meeting Oprah. Also, having our PRIME MINISTER kissing ass like there is no tomorrow. Truly embarassing.

Plus everything is so cliched it's terrible.

yes, only oprah can fix all the problems in the world

give it a effing break yeh?

there is no saviour, no salvation...

it is only you that can save you from yourself

Re: Oprah Winfrey

My own knowledge. The two studio shows will go prime time the other two complilation shows are yet to be decided as they were not part of the original deal - a bonus as it were.

i have been working for the past 3 months on this project. have your own thoughts about her and her "fans". But what is totally undisputable is that this is the greatest piece of marketing Australian Tourism has ever seen. It will dwarf the Hogan Say G'day campaign of the 80's.

If the local media hysteria is turning peoples stomach then slam the local media - but remember we get the media we deserve and like it or not Australians lap up reality tv/peek a boo lifestyle shows. Oprah is the single most influential voice in world media - a fact that simply cannot the denied. Why do you think the worlds largest companies are fighting to get their goods given away on her shows? because "stay at home mums" are her only audience - don't kid yourself. Not since Condelezza Rice was chief of security in the Bush government has there been a more powerful women in the world.

Remember increased tourism numbers helps the entire country. It helps to try and balance the ridiculous inbalance we have in the balance of trade figures.

Restaurants, shopkeepers, hotels, attractions, pubs, cab drivers, limos, bus companies, airlines the list goes on and on. I doubt if there is a single poster on big footy (of working age and in the workforce) that does not know at least a couple of people that work in areas that would benefit from increased tourism numbers.

And for those of you who doubt the value of this promotion please feel free to come up with an alternative campaign.

this.

the $ spent on oprah will get returns unlike the last two campaigns

she is the gift that keeps on giving.

the only sad thing is that a talk show queen being shoved on a plane and flown to australia with her audience is the best idea that tourism australia have come up with for 5-6 years.

that's a sad indictment on the bureau and it's staff.

Might work until the minimum wage & welfare dependent bottom feeders of American society that make up a significant chunk of Oprah's hysterical audience find out how much it costs to fly here and how little value for their dollar they'll get as well

As a tactic, I can see its worth, albeit short term. From a strategic point of view, I can't see how significant brand equity can be created for the 'Australian brand' using a turbo-charged American spruiker. Using Oprah, to my mind, is akin to using the brand power chick. It'll sell your product or service, but it doesn't build your brand in any meaningful way. Great for PR and that sort of thing.

And I'd argue, that the old Mojo campaign of 'throw another shrimp on the barbie' not only captured an essence of Australia based on a truth, but it also portrayed it successfully and in a memorable way. One that simultaneously increased sales and grew the brand. It was a brilliant strategic campaign that not only branded Australia but increased sales too. Oprah as a marketing tool fine, but she doesn't make a sustainable brand campaign in my opinion.

Some sad shit posting going on here.

When i was younger we used to call the english "Whingeing Poms".

Now this country has become the whingeing country . I mean FFS what is the big deal - why do people crack it when others get some good news or good luck? Oh thats right its cool to be a critic.

Good luck to them and good on Oprah for making people happy.
Don't read the HS then. I've never seen a bigger bunch of whining losers.

Btw, did you know Oprah had once been arrested for drug trafficking? They found 400lbs of crack under her shirt.

when i was at the gorillaz concert last night damon albarn pointed out *sarcastically* how much better we were all feeling because oprah was in town:

the reaction from the crowd was *jeers all around*

Oprah's visit was so cliched and monotonous it was painful and blased.

Imagine the first news item of every bulletin was of this self-serving, sheep-herding borderline hermaphrodite. If that is the case then it is an incredibly slow news day. Nothing to report just this junket that Oprah was on that the taxpayers had to fork over 5million dollars of their hard earned money even though for Oprah this would be play money. Julia is a disgrace of a Prime Minister, which again was not elected by the people of Australia, and almost the same quality of a person, brown-nosing Oprah with an expected poor display by shoving Western Bulldogs paraphinalia in Oprah's presence when she herself prostituted to the GWS.

I apologise if my comments grate people here but this is where I stand on this issue.

/rant

i point it out

the news service - ie channel 9 made it like it was supposed to be a good day where the people are happy because of this so-called event

it did nothing for me

what happened to people who were robbed, or had bad things happen to them that day?

nope: run with the "feel good news" story, breed the ignorance

Going off on a tangent which is more interesting than Opera...

Julia is a disgrace of a Prime Minister, which again was not elected by the people of Australia

In Australia, the Prime Minister is not elected by the people. The people elect the Member of Parliament for their electorate. The party - or coalition of parties - who wins the most electorates gains power, then decides who their leader will be. The leader has never been elected by the people of Australia (as distinct to the people of his/her electorate) in the history of the nation.

I understand however if I recall correctley the liberals had won more votes and seats outright. The fact remains that our leader was "elected" by three Independents who chose the Labor party. Once again not by the people of Australia. Julia was never accepted is not accepted and will never be accepted, in my opinion, as a leader. In the first instance she backstabbed the then PM Kevin Rudd and in the second instance she was 'elected' by a select few.

You are right though we never elect a leader, however in this case not even the public were able to elect the party or the coalition of parties thereof.

I understand however if I recall correctley the liberals had won more votes and seats outright.

One more seat, failed to get a majority of seats, Abbott & the coalition would be no more "legimate" than Joolia & the ALP.

Two party preferred totals irrelevant and the fact that both parties at various stages used it as an argument as to why they should govern was an insult to my intelligence.

It was 4 mil - and Oprah got diddly of it - it was all spent in Australia and was paid to australian tourism businesses. It was money that would have been spent anyway on this type of thing.

Never let the facts hey ??

Any indications of an influx of American tourists yet?

I doubt her target demographic can afford to fly to Australia right now.

I'd like to know this as well. :thumbsu:

However the other day I saw an over-weight American WASP family at KFC arguing with the staff about not recieving enough napkins, I wonder f they are Oprah fans?

Are you white? Overweight? I mean afterall you were in KFC.
