Originally upon hearing the band name, I thought they may have been some sort of tribute act recounting a long-lost member of the Marx Brothers who starred in pr0n movies, however, upon a closer look, Augie March have developed into one of my favourite bands over the past few years.
I bought their second full-length album 'Strange Bird' yesterday (released on Monday), and saw their promotional show at Gaslight. An enjoyable experience.
Having only listened to the album a couple of times, I can't say that it is as good as the absolute classic 'Sunset Studies', however, this isn't to say that further inspection won't render a different opinion.
IMO, Glenn Richards would have to be one of the best songwriters going around in music today. Similarly, while you may see slicker acts doing the rounds, the layered/textured sounds of Augie March come across as pure compositional genius. An antique sound, which makes a bizzare cross-reference with aspects of modernism. You could say that same about Richards' lyrics as well.
The type of band you can listen to with a beer and a few mates on a lazy evening, although, that's not to say they'd be out of place serenading an intimate or melodramatic moment.
I have bought a ticket to see their album launch show at the Forum, on the 22nd of November. Their shows are always typified by a sort of humbleness, which leads you to feel as though you've known these guys for years, and possibly have been sitting drinking, and listening to them pouring out songs for days on end.
A brilliant, brilliant band.
