Hi Turbocat, I have just come across one of the black cat button badges & it is great condition, do you know what year they were around/produced?

Cheers,
Adrian.

Depends on the colors and detail. There were three variations. The first was a Herald promotion from 1962, which had a more royal blue and a 'Herald for Footy' banner under the cat, and 'Geelong Cats' arched at the top of the badge. The second design was the one in the pic, which came out in '63, with a blue closer to navy, the Herald banner removed and replaced with 'The Cats', and Geelong arched across the top. The third variation also came in 1963, with the blue darker again, a slightly different cat facing in the opposite direction, and 'The Cats' written in a thicker script.

None of them are hugely hard to find, in my experience the third one is the most difficult to come across. Keep in mind though, there have been many repro's of these pins. The way to tell, apart from looking at the condition and shape of the pin back of the badge, repro's tend to be larger. The originals were just smaller than a 10 cent piece. Most of the repro's are larger than a 10 cent piece with more modern pin back mechanisms.
