Does anyone know where the term Wooden Spoon came from? I'm curious.

Karbo said:Sorry for the late reply, but the name is actually derived from a Cambridge University custom of presenting such a spoon to the person who gets the lowest Third in the Maths Tripos.
Wrong... if you knew my grandmother growing up then you would know the wooden spoon came from her and almost always preceeded a sound ass spankingcroadys_girl said:so where did wooden come from?? lol
Damn! You beat me to it.TRIGGAMAN said:If you want to learn more about wooden spoons a good place to start would be St.Kilda
cypher said:They have their right to enjoy their time in the sun but you'd think saints fans could comeback with something more than the score. And after having only a top four season they should be a bit more humble considering they haven't won anything yet. The thread is about the origin of the wooden spoon so you have to mention the saints for riewoldts sake!
truthriccardo said:You don't absolutely have to mention St Kilda when talking about last place, that sort of thing smacks of sour grapes by jealous or angry people. It is footy tribalism in its basest form, and we should be somewhat past that in this day and age, really.
Carlton finished up holding the unwanted woodwork more recently than my side, is it relevant to bring that up?
Well the truth can hurt it took the blues 107 years to get one.riccardo said:You don't absolutely have to mention St Kilda when talking about last place, that sort of thing smacks of sour grapes by jealous or angry people. Before you start bagging Carlton we have 16 premierships and 1 wooden spoon in our trophy cabinet.
Which on the other hand St. Kilda have 1 premiership and 27 wonderful wooden spoons what a great effort to St. Kilda Football Club.

108 points v Carlton las game played.
Why should we. What a beautiful set of numbers, and as it was the last game between the teams you are on as good as your score.
I can, the score board......cypher said:They have their right to enjoy their time in the sun but you'd think saints fans could comeback with something more than the score. Fair to say it's been an exponential increase since 2004Well the truth can hurt it took the blues 107 years to get one.

Fitzroy came last in 1916 and won the cup. There is also the horses back end trophy for coming last. Wouldn't have known about it until my Mum's 10 pin bowling team won it.
I think it is far better than the wooden spoon. You can at least use a wooden spoon for cooking, you shouldn't get anything useful for coming last. What can you do with a trophy of a horses arse?
