Oscar is 202cm?
His leaping ability at ruck or deep forward means he is 2 phase player.
He can create goals from his centre ruck work and from the goal square.
May be a a slow burn, but I can see him rapidly passing players from other teams that do the same. Does Ben King ruck?0’

All he needs is the first 10 minutes in centre ball ups at the start of each quarter, then a chop out from DC.

It will come down to match ups when DC covers for Moore or Frampton.

Ben King has essentially never rucked. He did occasionally in 2021 and has probably done so twice this season.

If Oscar develops his tank and core strength he should be a good player for a long while.

Oscar’s form has thrown a spanner in the works. Or whatever the reverse of that is. Because he helps us win clearances. For that reason alone he’s a unicorn. Or almost.😝

It seems like forever since we were winning the centre clearances. Felt like a dream in the last quarter against Carlton. And the goals came.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say, is that the rest of our season is hard to predict if Oscar keeps this up.

In a good way.

Thanks for clearing that up VP 👍🤐

"He's unbelievable...there's been the shift in ruck rules which suits Oscar Steene's game. An underrated side of his game is his aerial game, he went forward and kicked two goals and took bug clunks," Nick Daicos said on AFL 360.

On multiple occasions across his early games, Steene has been used at centre ball-ups to utilise his natural athleticism, with the youngster having the best vertical leap at the Magpies.

He then rotates forward with Darcy Cameron, allowing his more seasoned teammate to utilise his combativeness at stoppages around the ground and drop back to provide an extra man in defence.

"I feel like him and Darcy Cameron are really complementing each other really well. Darcy is really good around the ground so they're doing some deals and it's been really effective for us," Daicos added.

Love the kid for his athleticism and resilience to date but as I've tried to say before, he's only played the handful of games and several of those have been against the dinosaur rucks that couldn't jump against him, he should be ok against the Bombers but then Reeves and Meek pose a real "physical threat" to such an immature body. Lets not put all our hopes on this lad just yet, DC won a B+F last year and still has a protective role to play against the "dangerous" ruck combo's across the league.

Not sure about Reeves so much but Meek is an animal I do not want Meek getting a chance to hobble Oscar that worries me .

Not sure its reasonable to think Steene will beat everyone he comes up against. Cameron certainly doesnt.

He's still a kid, and you can't fault what he has done so far.
He's still a work in progress, but his start at AFL level has been very promising.

Tim English was the same age when Grundy was ragdrolling him during that 2020 season.
Most rucks dont tend to develop into mid 20's.. I think Oscar is doing nicely.

I'm not worried about him having to beat everyone else, I'm worried that these very young "jumping rucks" are leaving themselves open to being taken down the middle by a dominant physical beast and the likes of Meek, Xerri and Nankervis are just the types to do it.

DC was very good too against Carlton.

Looks to me like the coaches are doing it brilliantly and being selective with his tasks. He'll be fine. It's McRae who's going to be in strife when fans go bananas due to Oscar being shielded from a shit match up.

Agree JuniorB, the thing that stood out for me when I first started watching him two years ago is that his desire is faultless - one day in particular I watched him (it was around the time that we had McStay and Frampton rucking in the AFL due to injury) and he had very little support in the VFL. He got a hiding from his opponent, but he kept presenting and doing his best until the very end of the game - he showed a lot of heart and I'm sure he won over some coaches with his never give in attitude.

The clearance and more importantly scoring differential at centre ball up for when Steene is in or out is staggering. Probably bigger than any team/player in the game because our standard is poor at it and we tend to create concede scores instead. I count two direct goals in this half off the top of my head and maybe even some behinds.

In saying that he struggles to put his hand on the stoppages around the ground so maybe that’s another comp high staggering differential.

Play Steene in the Middle then Push forward then Cameron can come up and do around the Ground Rucks Contests
