Today is the Oscars, don't normally watch it or pay attention. But it is an interesting year with no clear winner and I just read this insert about Conan who's hosting (who's the best dude)

BP - Anora - should have been Dune 2
B. Actor - Chamalet
B.Actress - Demi Moore
B.Director - Brady Corbet
B.Support Actress - I want Monica Barbora to win
B.Support Actor - Kieran Culkin

Excited for today. Might be the only one I really ever get to see live on TV being off work so I'm keen.

BP - Anora probably. Strange year - Dune would be my choice personally.
Actor - Chalamet or Brody. Chalamet's performance in Dune was the best of the year though
Actress - Off top of head agreed on Moore. Mikey was great too. Either of them
Director - Yeah probably Corbet, I'd rather Baker win this over BP personally but then I dunno what would win BP
Supporting Actor - Personally I'd go Pearce. Norton was elite though in Complete Unknown. I'd have Strong over Culkin but all were really fantastic.
Supporting Actress - Barbaro and Jones from Brutalist are head and tails above the rest in my opinion. In saying that I have not watched Emilia Perez and never will watch that shit.

I have only seen Dune 2 and Anora of the best picture nominees this year, even so I was surprised Anora won as I didnt think it was that great. Not a bad movie but forgot about it the next day.

But now I remember Banshees of Inesherin went 0-9 so I guess my tastes are way different from the Oscar voters.

I know films are terrible these days but was Anora actually good? It looked like a Nicolas Sparks movie.

I don't think the trailer was very good, no, but it was a funny, entertaining, crowdpleaser.

I think this is just about the best result we could hope for.

Demi Moore getting passed over for a younger, brighter star...very Substance
She was not happy.

Just finished it all up fast fwding parts of it.

Adrien Brody spoke so well
Conan did pretty well.
Guy Pearce's Neighbours pic ftw 🤣
(Shame the Geelong supporter couldn't get the Oscar)
Miles Teller is a fox. I want him
So is Andrew Garfield

And that's about it from me

Anora is a very good winner. Had The Brutalist and Nickel Boys slightly ahead as personal favs, but worthy nevertheless.

Sean Baker making history is truly wild if you've followed his career for any stretch of time. I don't even know if Anora is a top 3 Baker film, but just rewards for finally getting the distribution/marketing support commensurate with his talents.

His speech was great. Go see movies in cinemas.

I'm a little sad about Demi. "Brave" and "vulnerable" are trite terms these days but her performance really was those things. Shows to me that the Oscars still don't want to give a horror movie a major award.

I enjoyed Anora and am happy for Baker. Thought Mikey Madison was good but a little one note given the hype.

O’Brien was ok but they really should give far less time to the MC and give that extra time to the winners.

Having said that thought Brody rambled way too long.

No proper tribute to David Lynch was inexcusable, more so when you see a ridiculous makes no sense tribute to Bond movies. Which considering they’ve just handed the franchise to Amazon flies in the face of what Baker was saying

Yep. His speech overall was great- but had he cut the length in half it would have been so much better.

Disappointing lynch didn't get a good tribute.

I didn't enjoy the James bond part.

Was really fun to watch. Most online saying what a great broadcast it was and that it was celebrating movies which they'd gone away from. Conan was such a good host! He's the best. Been a fan of him forever.

Seeing Quentin come out to present was a joy.

Demi not winning was a fair surprise, I felt for her.

I honestly thought Chalamet was going to win though. Not sure why. I preferred him for some reason but I can't say that Brody wasn't a deserving winner. He was amazing.

I guess you just can't take these all too seriously hey. There were clearly movies and performances that weren't recognised as they should be, and that's just the way it is.

I saw a good tweet where the point was you just kind of have to think 'what are the academy trying to say and rewarding'. This year it seemed they were rewarding independent filmmaking by rewarding Sean Baker.

Happy for the guy - he's a true film nerd. He's got a letterboxd account and regularly will post whatever random movie he's watching on instagram.

As others have said - Anora might not even be his best movie. But from the middle of this year it kind of felt like a crescendo for his sex work, struggling American story that he's done a fair few times.

I'd definitely recommend others check his work out though. Red Rocket I'd probably almost pick over Anora. The Florida Project is a great great movie too - Willem Defoe excellent in that.

Anora in my interpretation is a really great American tragedy story about the lower and middle class. Mikey Madison will be around for the next 50 years and I'm excited to see her. I'd like Sean Baker to explore more than sex workers though in his next movie, although I'm not sure if he will.

I love QT. I would love to talk movies with that dude.

Conan- i dont watch his show but I do like him. Thought some of his jokes were hilarious

Pretty good ceremony, really. The James Bond tribute was dumb. I love him and all but I’m not sure why Quincy Jones got such a special tribute, and it seems a lot of this was in lieu of not having the Best Song nominations perform, which I think is a mistake.

Conan was the best host they’ve had in a while and makes you wonder why they took so long to get him. He actually seems to love movies, which is nice!

The speeches were mostly fine. Big fan of the Short Film man and woman co-winners who were giving a speech about empowering women only for him to say halfway through “you’re doing it wrong”, take over and then say exactly what she’d said.

Brody’s was a shocker. He broke the 82 year old record for longest speech which is what brought in the whole concept of people being played off.

I think Anora was the best of all possible winners so a good outcome all around.
