OT - Ashes

field placings, when to use/take off your bowlers, whether to bat/bowl first are a few things

yup.

AB was not a good captain, he inspired through action, but as far as actual captain type activities he was average.

Steve Waugh had only one gear, and did not respond too well on the back foot. Mark Taylor was a brilliant captain in virtually everyway.

In your opinion of course.

IMHO Ponting has the opportunity to go down as one of the best Australian captains. Not just because of his winning record. His tactics during this Ashes series were spot on. He also has about five years by which time he will have to deal with post McGrath/Warne and by the time he retires, only Michael Clarke will still be around of the current team. If he can hand over to the next captain (probably Clarke or perhaps White) and the Australian team is still top of the world it will be an incredible effort. His brilliant batting at the most important position also helps his cause.

I never thought I'd be saying this after 2005, but his improvement has been as noticeable as the current winning streak the Australians hold. Of course all of this is hypothetical. It will be very interesting to see how Australian cricket unfolds for the remainder of Ponting's reign.

Let me guess you are realted to Ian Chappell?

I find is amusing that everyone is backon Ponting's wagon after he copped a heap after 2005, really after doing little wrong.

You can't just judge a captain on results.

Ponting copped plenty after the 2005 Ashes and rightly so.

First he completely misread the pitch and situation at Edgbaston, handing England the initiative by sending them in on a road not long after losing his best seamer to a freak accident.

There were the questionable field placings - ie, only one slip when Brett Lee was steaming in with a new rock.

Then he completely lost it during the loss at Trent Bridge after being run out in his second dig by sub fielder Pratt, abusing England coach Duncan Fletcher as he made his way back to the pavilion - a clear sign he was cracking under the pressure right at a time when the rest of the team needed his mental strength the most. Something his recent predecessors would never have done.

Poor captaincy all round.

But having said that, he's really matured after that series loss and has come back stronger for it - and that's where many, including me, have hopped back on the bangwagon.

Of course the big test will be how he performs without two of the greatest bowlers of all time in his lineup - Plan A - 'give Glenn the new ball' and Plan B - 'chuck it to Warney' will need some minor rehashing, you'd think. Because in their absence there's no doubt his team is going to face unprecedented pressure (in the recent 14-year era of Australian hegemony) in the years to come.

Correct. Its easy to throw the ball to McGrath and then Warne one over before lunch.

Clark looks the goods but I still have Q marks over Lee

let me guess, you have nothing to add? ;)

you can't make an argument based on imagined statements. who said anything like this? no one.

One finds one self rubbing hands in uncontrollable glee in anticipation of good times ahead. :)

.

My beef about 05 was our middle order not performing

Even allowing for that, that was the test we followed on and had them 7 for when they won we make 50 more in our second dig and we almost win.

England did well in 05 but

They lost that match by one run. Making a line ball call at the toss is hardly a hanging offence. He showed faith in his bowlers.

Not sure what having a go at Flethcher has to do with his captaincy

I agree he could have done better but he wasn't awful. Now he is God again. Can't see that he would have changed by so much in such a short period of time.
