Well, as mentioned, I was in South Australia up until Wednesday morning.

Basically me, two friends from the casino who work as croupiers and one of their girlfriends. Adelaide championships were on, and we all went down for two of the "industry" events and some other events as well. It ended up as more of a holiday then actually playing poker, but I ended up being a winner for table games and for poker which was nice...

Firstly, the games. Each day I played...

SAT NIGHT: 4/8 Limit, 2/3NL and 1/2NL
SUN NIGHT: 2/3NL and 1/2NL
MON NIGHT: $120 PLO Freezeout, $265 NLHE Industry event, 2/3 NL
TUES NIGHT: 2/3NL and 1/2 NL

Most nights there were a few 1/2 and 2/3 games, with a 5/5 game most nights. Limit was rare, we got a 4/8 game going on Saturday night, but every other day the only limit game they had lists for was 10/20, and we only got a max of about 3 people.

Crazy pineapple was also licenced, but we couldnt get a game going while I was there...

The games themselves? Well, the 2/3 was easily tougher then the Burswood 2/3. It took me a while to figure out, but then I realised that 2/3NL isnt the entry level game in Adelaide. The 2/3 in general was a bit tighter and definately more aggressive.

One particular day was pretty funny... Basically, I was in seat 7 and there were two friends? in seats 8 and 9. They liked to put the $6 straddle on. They would usually get 4 callers, then some buffoon (me:)) would 3bet squeeze to something like 55, and everyone would fold. Well, they did for a little while, then they started 3bet isolation my late position opens, and 4bet shoving from the blinds when I would squeeze. Basically, I began getting it in with AJ and TT up to 80bb deep which was well, interesting...

The 4/8 limit game was pretty bad. It was very tight and actually a waste of time for someone used to playing 10/20. I got c/r a lot on the turn, which is a lot different to those at Burswood who just love to donk when the backdoor straight drops in...

1/2 was basically just great for some degen gambool, which happened on the last night we were there, we all sat down and kept shoving with a range that could be described as "light"

The tournaments were relatively steep in terms of vig, but they were pretty good fun. The structure for the NLHE industry was brilliant with an 8k starting stack and a decent level structure, including a 150/300 level that rarely exists in Perth.

My actually tournament results were bad... I ran around 20/42 or so in the NLHE industry. I tried to 3bet squeeze against a fairly laggy open, except he had AA... woops... Eventually shoved AI with 44 around 6bb deep and got called by TT. Ten in window, gg...

The plo was pretty funny. The aggro cash table was played out before this started at 4pm, and one of the aggro's was on my table. Around the 3rd hand he 3bet my UTG open, which I obv 4bet with AK68ds for lulz... we checked down and one pair of kings was good, so yeah.

He 3bet around every 4th hand or so, and two orbits later he opened for pot UTG, I raised with AAJT double suited... A call, maniac 4bets, I 5bet all in and he calls... He has KK47 one suit, which I have crushed, and in terms of plo its about as good as you can get it in...

FLOP: 356 all red I have black cards and my equity drops to around 2%... gg...

Some other things about the trip that was good...

- In adelaide all the chips were bought from the cage before you started, which is different from Perth, where all chips are bought at the table. That made the game a bit faster which was good.

- They have a betting line. Perth needs this asap, especially to stop those that call out of turn, or absent mindedly put in $3 or $10 without realising a raise has happened.

- Adelaide have an awesome little cafe (cafe junction) near the poker room that just crushes the soul of anything Burswood has to offer. 18inch beef schnitzel with chips, salad and a pint of beer for $12.50 with another free pint if you can finish it. Sadly, because we had been at Haigh's chocolate factory I didnt get it done... Also, $5.95 for a roast with vegies, chips and a soft drink... Better then maccas...

- The casino building is a lot older then Perths, and the casino itself is in more little rooms compared to the somewhat open play floor at Burswood. I didnt manage to get lost a couple times in the casino, which was pretty lol...

- Some of the rules are a bit wierd. Firstly, a new table starts the button in seat 1, which according to the crown people is pretty much standard but seat 9. In Burswood, a high card decides where the button is. Finaly a rule we have which is better then yours...

- Also, in the heads up of the PLO rebuy industry event (which one of the dealers got HU in). Said dealer calls all in on the flop and his opponenet turns over a better hand. In frustration, dealer throws his cards face up to the middle of the felt, but they fly striaght off the table. The hand is ruled live (he loses) but really, at Perth that hand is snap dead. And again, same dealer does the same thing in a cash game, calling the river and his hand is good, but he throws his hand is the wrong way up past the betting line. His hand is again ruled live and he wins a pot.

This particular dealer is a good bloke in general, but i mean really, you work as a croup in Perth and still do things like that.

Some funny hands in cash games I havent mentioned...

- I raise pre with AJ and get called in a few spots. Flop KJ6. I check first to act because I dont want to get called and play a tough turn card. Everyone checks. Turn 6 and I bet 30. One call, dealer overcalls with 44 ldo... River 4 obv... I check, other caller ships with expertly played A6... Dealer friend says didnt intend to overcall, and missed it despite the fact I am seat 6 and he is in 8 and the other caller is in the 7.

- Another won were dealer friend open limps the CO with J4 vs KJ. Flop KJx, turn 4 river 4 easy game...

- And the funniest one. On the Monday after the industry NLHE tournament and I am playing 2/3. Reasonably good looking blonde girl who works at Crown is on my right, and we generally chat and socialise while both of us build up decent stacks. Our nights started around 7 and it was up until about 12 at this time. We havent played a heap of hands at this point vs each other. She raises and I call OTB. A few other callers. Flop KT4 with two spades... She bets, I raise. Folds to her, she tanks and then folds a king faceup without showing her other card. I obv tell her I had a massive draw... despite the fact I had QT and was looking for her to fold all her one pair hands except maybe AA, which I expected to happen...

All that chatting and conversation for one hand :D. If you are reading this reasonably good looking girl, sorry:p

Some other funny stories

- We get to talking about the biggest pots we have dealt. Mine is laughably small, like $700. I have won about 20 pots bigger then that, and the casino dealers have obv dealt bigger because of bigger games. Crown girl mentions she was dealing 300/600 dealers choice at Crown (not the Antonious vs Durrrr game, which I thought for a split second it was). She also mentions that these players dont even bring cash to the casino, they have accounts. Dealer friend, being the suave individual that he is, mentions that I have an account at Burswood (obv not as balla as Durrr and the like). Thanks for busting my cover as a poker n00b dealer friend...

- I caught up with a poster from twoplustwo (ChrisV) pretty cool dude, and we ended up doing a lot of prop betting on the sports on that Sunday afternoon. I ran pretty bad, the highlight being betting quarter by quarter on Norwood vs whoever they played in the SANFL prelim. Norwood were down at halftime when we went our separate ways, and obv Norwood turned on god mode and dominated... I think we reached the super degeneracy stage where we were betting on replays of games we didnt know the result of... Go Werder Bremen....

- About prop betting, I ran so bad at the elevator props, as to which side of the hallway at the Intercontinental the elevator will arrive from... I think I ran something like 2 wins, 8 losses for the weekend... Also lost props on eating that 18 inch schnitzel, whether we had one safe or two in our room, but did win if it was possible to access the pool, when I couldnt earlier in the week. Turns out they were renovating, and as such I won that prop...

- I had meant to go to Adelaide oval for a tour, but being the lazy 21yo I am, never got out of bed early enough to do so... Up until Monday night, so three nights in Adelaide, I had been to exactly the poker area, around 65% of the casino, the path between the casino and the hotel (around 100m) and the room ldo... That was somewhat funny to an extent...

- On the last night, I finished playing poker aroun 1:30am. We had to leave for the airport at 5am, and as such, we didnt really want to sleep before going to the airport. The movies and Playstation games are too expensive in the room, cant be bothered going back to the casino, and eventually one of the dealers has a brainwave.

At the adelaide intercontinental on the 4th floor or so there is a little courtyard, and every level above that dosent have a floor in the middle between the rooms, which are organised in a square shape, but just an open space. So obv we end up throwing paper airplanes across the hotel at 4am in the morning... As you do...

Overall, a pretty awesome trip, but I wish I had have stayed longer and bought more chocolate from Haighs obv...

Happy to hear you had a great time. As I've said before, I really enjoy going over to Adelaide. Good chance I'll head over again in February (unless I go to the US).

With regards to the rules, I think the biggest difference between casinos is where you get your first buy-in, where you get additional buy-ins, and if a miracle happens, where you cash-in. I kind of like the Crown system. First buy-in at the cage, subsequent buy-ins at the table or from a chip-runner, cash in at the same cage as before. However, Sydney's rake system wins. They do not have a rake box, the rake and time charges go in the dealer tray, so you usually don't have to worry about running out of 1s or 5s.

And ash, you should have played 1/2 PLO. Crazy game. Can't get it up at Crown, but it's a staple in Adelaide.

In Perth the first BI is at the table, as are the others, and when you leave, the dealer colours you up which is a bit of a pain. In perth also, the rake goes in the draw, so the chips theoretically stay on the table but the draw will usually overload at the end of the day so people take full racks to the cashier, and during the game need fills as people take full stacks away from the table.

PLO didnt run over there sadly. We tried one day and had 7 players, but they just couldnt quite get it up...
thats what she said
Overall I really enjoyed my time there and would definately go again...

Went to CHCH 11 years ago, didn't go to the casino though.

I'd be interested to hear all about your trip.

Hi all,

Going to Adelaide for the Hawks first game of the season. My first time in the city and funnily enough have booked a hotel room for me and the doris right opposite the casino there!

So the inevitable question is, hows the poker?

Not bad. About 14 tables. Check opening hours though. Something ridiculous like 2pm or 4pm on weekends and 7pm on weeknights.

Cool, thanks. Do they have low limit NLHE as far as you know?
yep, they do a 1/2 nl holdem, being that you'll probably play after the crows game, prepare to wait to get on a table for an hour or so at that time of the night

Played at Jupiters last night. They have a 2/4 game with max rake of $12 (changed recently from $14 I believe). That is a damn high rake!

Quality of players was fairly average to be honest. Lots of talk of being geniuses there but just real amateur hour for most of it. 1 guy was up about $450 but was going in with 10 high 4 card on the board flushes. He won a hand with 2/8 which hit on the turn and river. He said that he thought his opponent had AQ or AK yet called a 3/4 pot sized bet on the flop of J-10-5. He then called the turn bet which brought a 2 and bet 2/5 pot on the river when an 8 came........

The guy who he beat in that hand then went on tilt for the next 2 hands. The next hand the dealer and 3 of the players involved showed their incompetency when A-9 was awarded the winning hand on a board of 2-3-4-6-5 because he had a 5 high straight. After much debate it was finally a split pot.

The hand after that he went all in pre flop again ($83) after seeing an A in his hand. I called with pocket 8's. Board played out nicely with 2-9-5-2-2. His unseen card was a 5 which made the dealer start to fold my cards before realising 8 is bigger than 5.

Next hand after that I get Ac-7c and call a raise to $12 (everyone raised to this pre flop. Only I ever did anything different which was a raise to $15). Flop came Qc-9c-2x. Raiser went all in but only had about $30 I called and won it on the turn.

Went home not long after up about $80

Last time I was at the Canberra casino (12 months ago) they were lucky to have a blackjack table running. That Casino has to be the worst in Australia. Its about as big as the Welcome Stranger in Bourke Street and from memory they had 1 roulette table and one blackjack.

Things may have changed since then but I would go to canberra casino with any high expectations

Anyone in Adelaide or familiar with Adelaide? I'll be in the city of churches after Christmas and wondering where I can watch UFC 141. Also the PDC World Darts finals will be on around the same time, so other than the poker room, looking for a decent sports bar.

Currently at the Adelaide Oval waiting for the cricket to start. Stopped by the casino earlier. Looks like the poker "room" has gone from 14 tables to just 8, but I'll check it out properly later. Still seems ridiculous that they won't open till 7pm. Couldn't they at least open at 5pm for people that might want to go from work?
