This all appears to be a bit of a beat up by that quality publication - the geelong advertiser !

Ottens is competing in all the drills including ball handling - marking and ruck contests. For a bloke with an infection and pending loss of his pinky I find that hard to believe.:thumbsu:

A Richmond beat up. All these rumours start from there and somehow make it to the papers. The punch on rumour last year was the same...its a shame 80% of there supporters will never get over him leaving.

Nah,they've quoted Bomber from his SEN interview yesterday.
It did prove that Addy story about the Big O's finger was a MASSIVE beat up.

Or that Bomber is playing it down !!!!

It's not as if coaches never play down the extent of an injury list at this time of the year. You only hear the truth when the season finishes and the excuses as to why we had a slow start to the season surface.

yes, and thats why he has shown no signs of the injur at all

At the time i read it it was never the club saying he may have it amputated it was the addy. Just a big beat up for the quiet summer months. Unfortunately it was Sarah Bieske (I think) whose husband i am friends with who wrote it, she is a really nice bird actually.

Thumbs up

Geelong coach Mark Thompson yesterday gave Brad Ottens' troublesome ring finger the thumbs up.

The star Cats forward has been plagued by some joint stiffness as well as a persistent finger infection since he had surgery on it in November.

But Thompson said the finger had responded so well to recent treatment that Ottens was no longer considering having it amputated.

"It's been infected but at the moment it's pretty good,'' Thompson said on SEN radio.

"At this stage there is no intention of cutting it off at all.

"It was only if this (latest) operation didn't work, it didn't get rid of the infection and the joint seized up.

"But at the moment he's moving it OK and everything looks well.''

Ottens yesterday had his right finger taped at training and, despite being a little protective of it during some skill work, looked untroubled.

The 202cm ruck/forward was already recovering from a serious groin tear when he had a second operation to clean out the finger in December.

The lingering problem prompted fears that Ottens' marking and ball-handling ability would be permanently restricted, but Thompson said having the finger amputated was always a last resort.

"He's had two operations on it and the recent operation has worked,'' he said.

"The infection's gone...It was always going to be the last option to chop it off.''

Although news of Ottens' recovery is sweet relief to Cats fans following last year's injury woes, Geelong football manager Garry Davidson was still unsure whether Ottens would return in time for the NAB Cup starting on February 25. ``We'll monitor him along with the rest of the rehab group over the next four to five weeks,'' Davidson said.

"He doesn't need any further treatment at this stage.''

Thompson said having Ottens, along with ruckman Steven King, back in the fold was critical for the Cats as they try to reverse last season's semi-final heartbreak.

"One thing we need to do is get our big players playing and Brad Ottens is crucial,'' Thompson said.

"When he was up and going, because he had a good patch during the year before he got injured, we had the second-best attack in the competition. So just for our forward structure he's crucial.

"The other thing is that Tom Harley and Steven King missed out big chunks of the year and we struggle when our experienced players in the past have not played.

"We've just got to get them back on the track and playing as much as we can.''

Well there ya go.

I don't think it's that big a beat up at all. The original article said amputation was always going to be the last option. Seeing as Daniel Chick underwent the same thing not all that long ago, it's not a complete impossibility that it could have come to that.

The fact the club says there is no problem also makes me believe even more it is a problem. If the story was a complete load of crap Garry Davidson would most likely just hang up on the journo.

Remember at the start of last year when Steven King was supposedly fully fit and ready to go?! Surprise surprise when the season rolled around and he wasn't.

It's a worry that some of you take what the club say as gospel. We all know they have a history of lying about these sorts of things.

It's not so much what the club says that is important but plenty of people have watched him train unhampered since the article was written. What annoys me is that the addy does this stuff all the time because they know that any piece of footy news sells papers.

Exactly, Bomber's words didn't exactly fill me with confidence.
