The Western Bulldogs are delighted to announce today a significant acquisition to its coaching panel with the appointment of Alan Richardson as an assistant coach.
Like Chris Bond, who earlier this month was appointed to as one of the Western Bulldogs assistant coaches, Richardson will now become an integral part of Peter Rohde’s new look coaching panel for 2003.
“I think there’s a new era developing at the Western Bulldogs and I’m really excited to be joining the club at this time,” said Richardson.
“There’s no doubt the Bulldogs have a team capable of playing some very good football.”
“I’m particularly looking forward to working with a lot of their younger players who have shown a lot of potential in the past few years.”
“Part of my job will be to make sure these players continue to improve but across the whole playing group there is a lot of talent.”
Richardson, 37, said he was looking forward to new challenges at the Bulldogs after spending the past two years coaching the Richmond Football Club’s affiliate team in the AFL, the Coburg Tigers.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity the Richmond Football Club gave me and I would especially like to thank Danny Frawley, the other members of the coaching staff and all the players.”
“My time at the Tigers provided me with a very good learning experience but now I am a part of the Bulldogs team and I’m looking forward to the future,” Richardson said.
The Western Bulldogs senior coach, Peter Rohde, described Richardson’s appointment as a significant addition to his coaching team.
“Everyone I spoke to about Alan was glowing in their appraisal of him and he is just the sort of person I was looking to bring into the coaching set up,” Rohde said.
“Alan was extremely impressive throughout the interview process and there is no doubt many of the attributes he displayed as a player are now helping to shape a very knowledgeable coach.”
“Alan is a quality person who also has an excellent understanding of the game and I’m very much looking forward to him working with the rest of the coaching staff and the playing group,” Rohde said.
Prior to that, Richardson coached East Burwood to back-to-back premierships in the Eastern Football League in 1999 and 2000, where he commenced his coaching apprenticeship after a successful playing career with the Collingwood Football Club.
Richardson played 114 games for the Magpies between 1987-1996.
His appointment comes on the weekend where the Western Bulldogs Chief Executive, Campbell Rose, the Chief Operating Officer – Football Delivery, Stephen Newport and Peter Rohde have stepped up a gear in the club’s preparations for the new season.
Already, the Bulldogs have signed more than 2800 members for next season and with one more coaching appointment to be made the Bulldogs are getting on with the job of building their new look team, on and off the field.
