Nothing against Sheppard who I think will be a very good player, but Martin, Morabito and Fyfe would be very nice indeed.

I don't think those guys would have looked as good for us. Martin maybe but not Mora/Fyfe. They had the luxury of playing on the outside of Sandilands, Pavlich, Barlow and Mundy in top form - makes their job a bit easier.

Also, Harvey will play his youngsters forward of the ball to take advantage of their run and pace heading towards goals. Worsfold has played Shep, Smith, Stevenson on the half back flank - rarely releasing them to the wing or HFF (unless it is Masten who would be better in the middle).

the problem was the finish to the end of 2009 - where WC finished artificially high for the quality of the squad and 2010 bought them back to the correct positioning.

For those that are interested - a couple of months ago I spent time with one of Trevor Woodhouses right hand men. I happen to know this guy pretty well as he has worked with my wife for about 7-8 years and we catch up perhaps twice a year at social events.
Because I'm the only one interested in footy at these dinners he sits next to me and talk invariably turns to WC and draft picks as I know he spends hours and hours and hours watching kids play all over Aust.

I asked him whether WC had made a strategy mid way through the year when a PP was on the offering as to whom they would have selected with picks 2 and 4. After being a little coy he admitted that such a list existed and said that Scully was always going 1, and that WC would probably have taken Martin at #2, knowing Melb would go with Trengrove leaving morabito at #4. As to pick 18 he said that it depended on who was available, but Fyfe and Bastinac headed their suggested list at that point.

Goddammit. Actually what really peeves me is that we are being shafted this year - we should in the running for a Swallow or Bennell, or being compensated for not being in the running. Club should be arcing up over this IMO.

*Sigh*

If the general consensus is that 2007 was a weak draft - then the blokes we picked have certainly played accordingly.

Shaping up to be remembered the same way as some of our horror drafts in the mid-late 90s.

We should have tanked despite the media pressure.

Natinui Shuey Martin Swift Morabito Masten would have been handy center square combo.

we would of picked trengrove instead of martin. either way omg omg omg we would be staring down the barrel of multiple premierships. Not only that but we would of gotten picks 4 + 6 this year.

i don't remember the pre-draft reports too well but it does look now like our expectations were a bit high for this draft group. no wonder probably, considering the calibre of the players we lost.

masten has been the most frustrating to date. part of that is injury and part of that might be opportunity, but mostly it has been under-performance.

for all the talk about masten being played out of position, last time i checked there were still 36 blokes on the paddock and he rarely looks comfortable amongst them. his disposal and decision making is ordinary, he never beats his man at a one-on-one contest (grrr) and his second efforts are nothing to write home about. whether he is playing on the ball, HFF or at FB you expect to see some indication of ability.

people say he's ridden hard by fans because he was a #3 pick. i actually think to date he's been cut plenty of slack by the selectors purely because of where he was chosen. let's hope for an uninterrupted pre-season and an improvement next year.

ebert: not an outstanding career to date. tries hard but only notice he is on the field when he turns it over. pity it's a bit of a habit for him because he seems to be a nice kid and a popular figure within the club.

scott selwood: really made some strides in the second half of this season. i love that he is hard at it and is one of only a handful of players we have (along with waters and spangher) who is willing to give it to the opposition.

notte: dunno a thing about him apart from what i read on here.

if the draft was today i would take cyril, grimes or dangerfield above any of those guys.

Yes we would be. We would have the best young mids the best young ruckman. 2 Good young forwards in kennedy and lecras, a good defensive unit as well as picks 4 and 6 to fill any gaps.

We'd also have a different coach if we got another ****ing PP this year.

We'd never have come last this year with Martin, Morabito and Bastinac/Fyfe. Just my opinion but just no.

Read previous page (Bond_007 I think posted it).

I thought I had the conversation with you, where you told me he got it in his 4th year.

3rd year is insane.

Yeah we did, I told you 3rd year. What I actually said was "the same year that Masten will be entering now", and that was at the beginning of the year.

I was harsh, I'm sorry babe.

ohk cheers. That makes me happier with our recruiting staff. i rated trengrove as the fourth best mid in that draft after 1. scully 2. Martin 3. Morabito so happy to see they probably thought the same.
But at the same time why did we not tank?

I've got semi-confidence in Masten, just chuck him in the fricken middle, he's a pure mid! I think he'll be a better version of Fletcher, and despite what people think on here his kicking isn't that bad, if you watch his pre-season videos on youtube.

Ebert I just don't know. I have a gut feeling eventually he or Stevens will be traded due to our list being clogged with inside extractors, but I hope it's him because Stevens has him covered in most areas. I have some faith though, he'll improve his kicking in a better team, which we WILL be next season. I'm just sitting on the fence, if he has only made minimal improvement by the end of 2012, get rid of him.

Scooter I'm reasonably optimistic with, let Adam Selwood do the tagging and have Scooter play an attacking mid role. Was touted to be the best Selwood of the four pre-drafting, just needs to be allowed to play that role.

With Notte, I don't want to get my hopes up, so in my head I've already written him off as a delisting in a couple of years - these stories rarely work out. However, I'm not saying he can't prove his doubters wrong and god I hope he does.

Why did the eagles not tank....
Do you even read ur posts?

Not sure why everyone is saying it was a weak draft, our expectations are too high etc Masto had some huge wraps on him predraft and was fully expected to become a star. Obviously that never happened. The question is why...

Sorry but I have to comment on all this Ebert bashing.

For a 20-year old, the kid is coming on pretty f*cking well. Give him a break.

In only his 3rd season, he was the all-round statistical leader at the club (http://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/Season2008/Statistics/tabid/7184/Default.aspx), including #5 for disposals, #3 for marks and #3 for tackles. Not bad for a kid.

He's still got 3-4 years of development left in him. If his disposal efficiency improves 15% in that time - which it it will, by natural course - we've got a terrific all-round 189cm player possessing courage, leadership and versatility with no real weakness in his game. I'd say that's good value :thumbsu:

Good call. I think he's been great too... Masten for me is the only one who hasn't come on but he's been injured so thats hardly surprising - like saying kerr and glass have had average years. The recruiting has been gold the past few years. Once these eagles start learning how to win games (which I don't think is that far off) it's going to be 04, 05, 06 all over again.
