He's got all the Wright moves

19th January 2012

Dandenong Stingray Nathan Wright received one of the best early Christmas presents possible when he was given a spot in the AIS-AFL Academy for the coming season.
Wright, 17, from Berwick, was given the opportunity after Western Australian Dale Garlett had to withdraw from the program................

So does that mean Cripps = Murdoch?

Im struggling to piece it together for some reason.

Pick 12 <> Lee + 24 (Wright) + (Beginning of 3rd round #46 which was ontraded to West Coast in the Cripps deal)
Cripps + 46 <> 40 (Murdoch) + 43 (Saunders)
Pick 13 aka BJ, 36, 56 <> Hickey + 25 (White) + 47 (Dennis Lane)

So Saunders was technically connected to 2 trades, but he's mostly a product of Jamie Cripps' departure.

The pick we gave Sydney for TDL turned out to be Tim Membrey.

What the recruiter said:
"Particularly with our first couple of picks we wanted to get the best available talent and part of that is waiting to see who everyone else selects. It's a bit of a waiting game, [but we're] very happy with the guys we got. In terms of overall strategy I think we got a good mix of players most importantly in terms of position, so we think that will add quite a bit of depth over the years. The profile of the list is such that we do need players in most positions at the younger end of the spectrum and we feel that we have got a good blend. A guy like Brodie Murdoch played half-back/wing, Josh Saunders is an inside-mid and Lewis Pierce is an exciting young developing ruckman as well so [he] will complement Tom Hickey."
- St Kilda list manager Ameet Bains

UDL better be worth it.

Loving the speed and agility with this batch of draftees. White is a couple of years away though as he needs to work on his endurance from everything I have read but everything else is there.

As soon as I saw Brodie Murdoch was Jordan's younger brother and apparently plays like him - I was sold. Saunders looks like a jet and is also inside as well. Midfield pace with a key forward who will be ready as Roo is in the twilight of his illustrious career (*shedding a tear as I say that*)

Pick 24: Nathan Wright, Dandenong Stingrays
Bains: Outstanding young man. His competitiveness is something that we love and I know even going through the tape with Scott [Watters] he was very excited by it. He is a terrific kid who plays at a breakneck pace. Plays off half-back but can play on a wing. I guess the thing that really captivates you about him is his attack on the ball and the contest.

Pick 25: Spencer White, Western Jets
Bains: He finished off the year extremely well. We feel that the blend of his height with his pace and athleticism is fantastic and his ability to mark the ball was something that really attracted us.

Pick 40: Brodie Murdoch, Glenelg
Bains: Younger brother of Geelong's Jordie Murdoch. Brodie is a half-back wingman with a fantastic, raking left-foot kick. He will certainly improve our kicking in that part of the ground. With a good physique we think he is not too far from that point of view off playing senior football if he knuckles down.

Pick 43: Josh Saunders, Geelong Falcons
Bains: Inside mid with terrific mix of speed and endurance. He works very hard and a terrific competitor.

Pick 75: Lewis Pierce, Dandenong Stingrays
Bains: A young emerging ruckman. We have gone from having a dearth of ruckman that was exposed a bit with injuries this year to having Tom Hickey who can come in and play but is still quite young and is developing to Lewis who we are prepared to give a bit of time to because we think he is quite talented.

Intrigue also surrounds the Saints first pick key forward Spencer White, whose dynamic gamestyle has drawn comparisons to Lance Franklin.

He'll need time, but St Kilda recruiting manager Chris Pelchen may have put together a high-octane forward line with Rhys Stanley, Tom Lee, Ahmed Saad and Tim Milera in attack. (--Good one Jay)
"He's raw, but Rhys Stanley was in a very similar position coming into the system three years ago and we all saw what he did this year," Pelchen said.

"We understand that a core group of our players are ageing, so we need to look beyond Justin Koschitzke and Nick Riewoldt."

Clubs with lots of choices found this year's lot a challenge settling on players at the back end of the draft, thought to be the most shallow talent pool in five years by some wise judges.

As they often say, next year is 'the bottler', filled with some quality big forwards at the top-end in particular.

interesting comment about the fwds

Who (other than Dunnell) will play 1st? I am excited. Hearing how the 1st 2 picks were made was interesting. They had a list, and crossed off the ones taken, the next 2 on their list was Wright (who Watters loves his attack on the footy) and White, a freak. Elshaug said that we had a big influence by the character of the players. (maybe why we did not get Garlett)

Pierce looks like a good player.

dandenong, good honest footballers. on a list now so he's happy.
development squad. ease him into it. may get three or four in the VFL seniors later next season.
ensure that he doesn't break down and gets more gametime the following year (2014).
one feels that the toll on these beanpoles will be fairly low so he should get through and make it.
we'll see, but to the naked eye and in three or four years we may have another one.

Saunders highlights reminded me heavily of Ledger's highlights.

Murdoch got a beast kick on him. Ala Crocker.

Wright the HBF/mid. Cripps.

And White the x-factor overload. Siposs.

It's 2010 all over!

Watters said he also had high hopes for big men Lewis Pierce (pick 75) and Spencer White (pick 25).
There’s a 202cm very talented ruckman in Pierce who to be honest we didn’t think would be available at that point in the draft. That was a great surprise for us. We’re keen to add to our ruck depth so that was a terrific pick. We had some talent in the front end again,” he said.

Looks like Pierce being available threw their plans out little bit with our last pick.

ST KILDA
24. NATHAN WRIGHT
(Dandenong Stingrays, 18, 183cm, 78kg)
Half-back with an ability to burst away from packs. Kicks the ball long and is a good runner, but has had his injuries this year.
28. SPENCER WHITE
(Western Jets, 18, 195cm, 84kg)
Consistent, goal-kicking key forward who has a huge vertical leap and is quick off the mark. Posted a handful of eye-catching performances through last season.
40. BRODIE MURDOCH
(Glenelg, 18, 187cm, 85kg)
Athletic medium forward with a booming left foot and plenty of speed. Has also spent spells in defence. Older brother Jordan is on Geelong's list.
43. JOSH SAUNDERS
(Geelong Falcons, 18, 183cm, 88kg)
Speedy winger who carries the ball a long way. Can also play in defence.
75. LEWIS PIERCE
(Dandenong Stingrays, 18, 202cm, 88kg)
Ruckman with good endurance and strong in the air, which could make him a potential pinch-hitter in attack. Has leadership credentials.
90. SAM DUNELL
(St Kilda, 22, 190cm, 81kg)
Mature-aged midfielder is promoted off the rookie list after five games in his debut season.
