MFC: Melbourne unveils new leadership group
Melbourne recruits Chris Dawes and Shannon Byrnes' immediate impact at their new club has been rewarded with inclusion in the Demons' nine-man leadership group for 2013.

The Demons announced their leadership group on Friday after an extensive process involving players, coaches and staff.

Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove have retained their roles as co-captains, while 2012 club best and fairest Nathan Jones has been elevated to vice-captain.
Mark Neeld definitely likes starting from square one, seeing Dawes and Byrnes in the group already. Jones to vice captain also a very just reward after his 2012 season, so I can't see anything wrong with the group as a whole.

The group: Jack Grimes (co-captain), Jack Trengove (co-captain), Nathan Jones (vice captain), Shannon Byrnes, Mitch Clark, Chris Dawes, James Frawley, Colin Garland, Jordie McKenzie

In: Shannon Byrnes, Chris Dawes, Jordie McKenzie
Out: Mark Jamar, Clint Bartram (ret.)

Well done to Jordie. He is a great role model and an example that hard work pays off.

I feel for the Russian. He just needs to get himself fit and firing, and playing good footy again.

Would prefer a smaller group, thats like 1/5th of the playing group in the leadership. I like Jones being recognised as an official "vice captain" though.

Would prefer a smaller group as well. I think 5 would be more than enough.

Happy for Jones. In reality he should be a co-captain as well. A definite leader at our club.

Happy for Jordie also. From memory he's won best clubman last two years running, so he should definitely be in our leadership group.

Would have preferred Dawes and Byrnes to earn there way into the leadership group, however I understand the lack of leaders we have had on and off field, and from all reports they are both ripping blokes. So happy to have them there.

Glad there was no Viney in the group as well. Let him find his feet for a few years before he takes on extra responsibility.

Would have loved to have seen Watts and Sylvia in the group. Again, understand the issues Col has had off field, but it's a shame his peers and coaches don't see him as a leader. Shows he has burnt some bridges, or does not have any real leader qualities. For a guy with so much talent, that's a shame. And Watts I believe does have leader qualities, but needs to start showing it a bit more in intensity and in improvement on the field. Hopefully he lifts a couple of cogs this year and makes the group next year.

Agree.. Too many in there... Would have been happy with Co-Captains, Co-Vice Captains and Co-Deputy Vice Captains

Reckon Watts would have to have a super breakout year to make that. Appears to still be too lacking in confidence to me, but I would love to see him get up there. Also hear that Sylvia aint too bright, but I don't know him so maybe I shouldn't be casting aspersions.

They're laughing at the appointment of Dawes and Byrnes on the bay, but everything I've heard is that they bring alot of professionalism, hard work ethic and so on, so I'm all for it.

Sylvia is getting on with things. He seemed to be mentoring Stark and Clisby at training the other day and leading them around. Doesn't need an official title, I think the coaches trust him.

I think it is a well balanced group ,covering all the age groups. Happy for jones to get vc ,he def earnt it with his season last year.As for watts , now we know he can play down back, and he has 2 rolemodels to learn from playing up forward , as has been mentioned just lacking the extra kilo's that i think will make him a lot more confident using his body.Lets face it , he is not a kamakazi player like some , but i think his improvement will come given time . He will be a very valuable player for the Dees .

I'll echo the sentiments of most and say that the changes are good, particularly the elevation of Jones to VC. Perfect man for the job. You could argue Jamar is stiff but that's the way these things go. Clearly Byrnes and Dawes have made a big impression on the group and they are rewarded for that.

Good stuff on the whole. Happy with Jones being VC, well deserved for him. I reckon the group is a bit big at 9 though, would happily drop McKenzie and/or one of Garland/Frawley to streamline it - all three seem the types to lead by example anyway so the title can be a bit superfluous. Nothing against them personally or as leaders, but these inflated groups look a bit silly at times.
