So now that we're likely done with this trade period having brought in Dangerfield, Smith, Henderson and S.Selwood but lost 11 senior listed players and 1 rookie listed player, through trades, delistings and retirements. Some are therefore out of our control whilst others aren't.

Mystery surrounds trading Walker and Jansen for a pick we're not using on Smith and using 2 picks on Smith isn't ideal. That said with both Walker and Jansen out of contract and recruiting players in recent years to replace them or push them further back in the queue then it's understandable that they'd seek a fresh start.

IMO regardless of what has gone out of the club this has still been a very successful trade period for the Cats. If Wells can find a gem or two with our late picks that will be a bonus.

What are others thoughts on our trade period?

Reserving my judgement for now. Theres still a twist to come I think.

10/10 from my perspective. We adopted the Hawthorn proven-premiership-winning model of identifying precisely what our needs are, and then identified the individuals to fit that bill. A strike rate of 100%

Why would he be likely to find a gem or two with late round picks in 'the weakest draft in history' when he has struggled with multiple first- and second-round picks in the past five years?

Smith was a bargain. I don't think it will matter much if your picks are in the 40's or the 80's this year. The future 3rd round was an important one to keep. Draft likely to be deeper next year & the pick could be high 30's. Not worried about having 7 spots to fill, may upgrade a couple of rookies (who could then be delisted next year when we have some better picks) and also may look at a recycled player.
An excellent trade period setting the club up for the next five years. Will be able to focus on picking up youth in the next couple of drafts.

Don't recall saying likely, just said it would be a bonus, implying that I'm not sold that it's likely at all. For Wells and Co to trade away so many picks suggests they don't rate the late draft picks either.

Yet we are bringing them in, for players who have shown promise...

This seems to be the first trade period in a long time where we have gone in hard and come out with the goods.

Most of the trades of the last decade that i can think of off the top of my head have been complete fizzers, with exception being ottens.
The proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Hawthorn did that when they were on the brink of a flag, not after having fallen down the ladder for four consecutive years.

2009? They appeared to be on the slide, and started a spending spree

Completely agree.

Its nice to be getting a Dangerfield, instead of a Drum/McIntosh though...
It's nicer to ace your picks 9 and 28.

Which picks has Wells struggled with?

Cockatoo, Lang and Thurlow are the only first round picks we've had in the past four seasons and I'm more than happy with all three.

Landing the likes of Murdoch, Kolodjashnij and Gregson with picks in the 40s has been superb, and we've also lost second round picks in Hamling and Jansen to seek opportunities elsewhere - so they are clearly rated as AFL-capable players.

Assume you're referring to Walker and Jansen, what can we do to make them sign a new contract other than point a gun to their heads? Out of contract players aren't duty bound to stay, I thought we learnt that last year with Bundy. Why would Jansen stay? He's still going to be back in the queue next year as he hardly deserved selection in 2015 and now there are new mids into the club, so for him moving could kick start his career. Walker would likely be behind Vardy and Clark and with no sub rule possibly even Stanley as well. So ditto, a change is understandable.

SJ I'm disappointed with, he should have been retained but I guess we don't know their reasoning for cutting him loose, there may be a good reason for it, we don't know.

Who else? Hartman, Blease and Toohey we had no control over and Kelly and Stokes were cooked. Same with Dawson, Hmac and Rivers (sadly). So that's 8 changes that were forced upon the club and the first two I dare say wanted a fresh start and walked out on the club.

2009 was clearly a one off, they had the same young-ish side as they had in 2008 when they won the flag. And they have been entrenched in the top four pretty much ever since.

The amount of outs sickens me especially considering we need to bring in a certain amount of list plodders.

So next year we have to delist a few nobodies who aren't even on our list right now, with the retirements of Lonergan, Bartel and Enright too... and that isn't even including if our LTI's get reinjured

Our worst 5 players in our squad by December will be the worst 5 players of any club in the competition

Hawthorn have been top four from 2011-2015.

We were top four from 2007-2011, and then 2013-14 (after H&A).

We have virtually rebuilt our entire side during this period. Next season we will have just four players who played in the '07 flag remaining, and one of those is Selwood who was a first year player.

Before this morning i would have said 10/10.

Now im not so sure.

I feel like we've given up a lot to get Smith, and im not sure he's worth it. 2 players, and 2 picks, with our first pick now being pick 67 this year, which is pretty poor, especially in a crap draft.

Im also salty about Johno going to GWS for nothing, knowing that we could have landed potentially a top 5 pick for that same move last year.

Overall im left feeling like we've reaffirmed our status as being a bit soft at the trade table. Im not sure we did well with the PD trade now in light of the Smith deal, with a first and second round pick + Gore. We should have said 9 + Gore and thats it, which would have at least given us a second rounder this year to draft with. I think Adelaide would have taken that, even if it might have taken them a few extra days to come to terms with it before agreeing.

The Henderson deal was a good one though.

Ill reserve judgement fully until the rest of the trade period has played out, maybe there's some more movement to be had. Or maybe this draft is as bad as the 2003 draft and we've been wise in moving all our picks out this year. Time will tell i guess, as it always does.
