Analysis Our Backline

With Houli we have to learn to take the good with the bad. He has always had limitations, otherwise he would have been getting a regular game at Essendon. His role in our side is primarily to be a springboard for attack out of the back-line. Anyone that expects him to be able to perform that role effectively, and then also to be a hard-core lock-down defender is seriously kidding themselves.

This actually says a lot. At essendon he was expected to defend and when he did not do it well enough he was dropped. He then proceeded to act like someone who was badly treated and came to us.
With us the same weaknesses have constantly raised their heads but it seems this is okay. Trouble is when it counts it comes back and constantly bites hard.
Seems to me the Bombers had it right and have the correct expectations.

Why not ? The problem with Houli is he is so easy to shut down as well as easy to dispossess from the ball . His left foot has more disadvantages than positives bc of his lack of vision let alone poor execution . He offers run , but like many money ball players it gets found out against better coached teams as well as better sides. It's no surprise our backline has looked a million times better without him constantly putting teammates under pressure by coughing it up or his lack of commitment to do the basics like tackling .To improve as a FC weaknesses in the teams need to be identified and replaced if they cannot improve them. Houli has got away with his deficiencies for too long , hence for our Stabilty over Four years. He's just one weak link and he has some friends.

Why not? Because he doesn't have that many strings to his bow ... he isn't good enough ... he is somewhat one dimensional ... he's not an A-Grader ... he has limitations ... would you like me to go on? But when he's allowed to play the game on his terms, he runs, carries the ball, provides rebound, and serves a purpose ... and he'll be better with Yarran in the side ... whenever that may be.

Are you serious ? His rebound Often rebounds back . Houli has been found out and in big games he is a major liability.
Do yourself a favour and watch the three EF maintaining you focus on Houli. You are typical of a lot of player defenders on herewith providing little facts to your argument. In actual fact your response is more of a blight on Houli as he cannot do his job properly bc he needs Yarran. Laughable really bc I don't see how all his atrocities I mentioned earlier will improve as the club has had 6-7 years to work on him and he's still the same.
To win a premiership you need to upgrade players. Houli should be in the gun.

I agree Grimes is a B grader, but he's a good B Grader.

I reckon he's one of those dudes who's really important as a cog in the machine and for structure.

He was a more serious out than given credit for IMO

And I reckon Houlis been good... Not this year but over the journey. He buggered up that kick out last year, but he's been good for us.

At least he can kick.
Houli is a poor kick under the pump. If you can't master this then you're a liability. He IMO is over rated in basically a side that is full of journeymen. We look better without him. Agree though that Grimes was the missing link and was a big loss

The team would benefit from Yarran being in the the same side as Houli because then we'd have more than one defender to use as a rebounding/attacking option, and more than one rebounding/attacking defender for opposition coaches to try to shut down.

By the way, Houli wasn't Robinson Crusoe in those elimination finals, he had lots of mates.

Agree he had mates and this was mentioned by me. Unfortunately those mates still are about which illustrates our poor recruiting.
Now if a player is poorly skilled under pressure it is irrelevant who comes into help him. This is the Cotchin and the two poorly skilled bodyguard theory all over again. You need class and skill added to replace turnover merchants. Cotchin will benefit with Flossy not the other two duds . Yarran to me is still a mystery and going by 2014 onwards he could be worse than Houli.

you need remember though he has potentially been playing with an ****ed up foot that whole time.

Agree, the game has more pressure and we look better without Houli. I believe he can get better. We have used the VFL better this year. Morris and Miles have found their best form after being returned to the VFL. Hammer got better after missing a game. Both Houli and Vickery need stints in the VFL in the midfield. Houli needs to develop his deficiencies under pressure and Vickery needs to develop his work ethic. They both need to develop their appetite for the contested side of the game.

Bump.

Current back six has a lot of promise, although also a lot of question marks. Obviously Rance is a stud and that was obvious at the time I created this thread but since we've had the emergence of Short and Markov while Astbury has rediscovered his 2014 form. Add the addition of Yarran and provided Short, Markov and Astbury continue to improve the backline could develop into a strong unit with plenty of rebound and hopefully be strong enough defensively.

FB: Grimes - Astbury - Short
HB: Markov - Rance - Yarran

Lmao what's morris's best form consist of? 3 possessions 4 late tackles after they've disposed of it and 4 late failed lunge/ smother type things that have the appearance of him being desparate but in effect he's just left laying on the floor being ineffective and lets not forget the bag of goals kicked on him. The thing with Morris is its so rare that he actually does something of use that when he actually does it sticks in your mind cos we're so used to him stuffing up everything. Coaches have said they leave Morris and hunt unattended cos they want the ball eventually in their hands cos they know odds are they'll cough it up straight away.

Be interesting to see Morris' recovery. Always got a spot for him. But yes backline looks very nice. Prestia and Steele, a RUC and a KPF and we may very well make a quick climb up the ladder.

Grimes Astbury Short
Markov Rance Yarran
Houli Prestia McIntosh
Deledio Griffiths/CHF(?) Lennon
Lloyd Riewoldt Rioli
Hampson/RUC(?) Martin Cotchin
Steele, C. Ellis, Vlastuin, Miles

The problem is - and if he ever gets on the park you'll quickly see - Yarran is not a defender. He might give soe rebound but his opponent will tear us up every week because he can't defend. He's a forward and a wing, just as McIntosh is a midfielder, but we'll keep plugging square pegs in round holes to our detriment.

Potentially very nice backline. If we have a fit Yarran and Houli then the three talls + whoever = strong defense and very good run and carry. To me the two big things we need to be good are a tough winning contested midfield and run and carry. If we can get the midfield working then that stops the oppositions ball movement. Then our defense has less pressure. And to actually score ourselves we need to run and attack. This year we simply haven't done that much at all. I'm quite willing to sacrifice some defensive ability if Yaz and Bachar can create for us. Teams that win do so by scoring more then the opposition. We have plenty of forward power in potential. But currently our game plan makes it very hard. So my conclusion (cause I know so much o_O:drunk:) is to focus firstly on bolstering the midfield then run and carry with skilled backs/mids. We now have Yarran, Houli, Menadue, Markov, Short and Macintosh to do that. Could transform our performance.

+ a forward line that works, but I'm not sure how much of that is slow ball movement. Another topic another time.

Yep. I'd play him on a wing. Any HFF worth their salt would take him to the goal square, and I do not want to see Yarran one out in the goal square.

He is okay defender but not great. Still you'd be swinging him back there as the 7th man to run the lines.

Dimma said last night he wanted Houli, Yarran and Deledio in the back six

wait deledio?? Geez he is coaching to save his career.
Funny isn't it. Dimma knows defence and **** all else.

Our back six is gelling again and could be improved with more class. But Lids..use him as an attacking weapon, Dimma. He's a nightmare to match up against.
