It Prob the worst in the AFL by fair at the moment, Carrol is a tryer and that is all he will ever be not enough leg speed good over head but it is tough to mark it over head when the ball is being kicked in so well. I know there is a lot of bagging of ward but i dont think alot of that is fair prob our 2nd best small defender other then wheels. Our back line looked a lot better when "show biz" came back in which is not good how old is he 31 or so. We miss Rivers somethin shocking and ferg is another who can not catch a break. Here is how i would like the back line to look all fit and well.

B: Wheels Ferg Frawley
HB:Warnock Rivers Biz

Hollard, Caroll, Ward, Brown are all done put a line though them Caroll is a tryer and that is all he will ever be Thoughts?

Ward's been more than serviceable, infact hes' played well... after his controversial mid season. dont know what melbourne you've been watching, and ive been critical of daniel ward for years now.

Bell is easily better than Warnock.
Our backline has lokked shit all year because we've been getting flogged out of the middle.
Feel free to flame me for it but the backline is far from our greatest problem.
Carroll would be better as a third tall. Rivers and Whelan when fully fit are indispensable - we really need to find another strong body that can take on the gorillas personally I'd trial Miller because playing as a negating defender probably requires the least brains of all - Garland could also have a crack he does look a hell of a lot like Chris Lamb.

Backline locks: Whelan, Bell, Rivers and Carroll

That leaves two spots open one for a gorilla tamer: Miller or Garland (we seem to be ****ed long term in this area)

And the other for a small, medium sized or offensive type: Bartram, Petterd, Sylvia, Wheatley, Frawley, Warnock, Dunn could all play these types of roles IMO.

I haven't included: Bizzell, Holland, Ward or Ferguson as they'll really struggle to hold a spot long term IMO.

Yeah thats what I reckon Belly. I know a lot of people get stuck into him on this forum but every time I see him play I reckon he's been alright. Got pace and a good long kick.

When has Fergeson ever done...Anything?

My ultimate backline:

B: Whelan Frawley Carroll
HB: Bell Rivers Bartram

Ward would still be in the mix. Brown would probably be done. I love Bizzell but he'd probably be done too. Hopefully Frawley can bulk up and take the best forwards and I then reckon Carroll would be more than servicable as a 3rd tall defender (assuming that Rivers can take the CHF).

ours is a shocker as well

B: Ryan Houlihan, Bret Thornton, Jason Saddington
HB: Heath Scotland, no one, Jordan Bannister

thornton is not a fullback and centre half forwards ussually kill us

I rate Rivers, Bell and Whelan as premiership level defenders, and under a new coach I believe we could have a quality defence by 2009. Geelong's current backline which is by far the best in the league gives an indication of what we should be heading for. Frawley looks very good and should be able to give run from defence and stop quick full forwards, Whelan and Bartram and good smalls and Bell and Rivers compare well with Milburn and Harley. The question is where will the big guy who can do what Egan is doing at Geelong come from.

B: Bell Frawley Whelan
HB: Bartram BIG UNIT Rivers

B: Milburn Scarlett Enright
HB: Mackie Egan Harley

Until then I'd wouldn't be upset to see Carroll, Ward and Bizzel kept on the list, but I believe Brown, Ferguson and Holland are past it.

pagan is putting irish in the ruck to help out ackland at the moment hopefully he goes to full back as soon as his brother comes in and waite at this moment is our best forward

I don't say this in jest but you guys are in dire straits by the looks of that...That's really, really stretched

Bell is going to be a gun. Hopefully Frawley can become a good FB and we all know how good Rivers is.

That gives us a backline of
B: ???? Frawley ?????
HB: Bell ???? Rivers

We desperately need to find a CHB. The small backs will be able to be covered by guys like Bartram and Petterd.

Does Miller have what it takes to be a CHB. I cant see why not. He is strong and has good endurance. Has towelled up Hall a number of times. He doesn't look like he can become a gun forward so i reckon try him as a back leaving this:

B: Petterd Frawley Bartram
HB: Bell Miller Rivers

I think the problem is that you'll find most brilliant CHB's in the game tend to have a very good footy brain and can read the play exceptionally well. Whether Miller has this going for him is debatable at the very least. I don't mean to lay into the bloke and I can perfectly see where you're coming from sneak but if you look at the likes of Maguire, Bowden and whatnot, these blokes have footy IQ's through the roof. Miller might not

Miller kept Hall to 3 goals last year and was pretty good. He got 3 Brownlow Votes for it which was a surprise though. The year before he was highly rated after 'toweling' up Hall but Barry kicked 2 goals 4. Imagine if he had kicked accurately? It would have been just another shit Miller performance in defence.

I agree that Miller has a low footy IQ but Jared Rivers reads the play exceptionally well, so Rivers can help him in that regard and Miller can help Rivers by having the strength. That said I want Miller traded at the end of this year and for us to hopefully pick up a bigger bodied key defender. It would be great to have two key defenders coming through at once, one quick (Frawley) and one strong, and the higher draft pick we use on this player the better (that said the best available talent approach is the best way to go).

Fair points master. As mentioned in previous threads though on the main board, you've got to understand that teams will only trade quality for quality unless they're blatantly inept (see Kangagays & Jon Hay trade) We have realised that young Miller has not got a lot going for him, given he can't make a team like ours in the state it is in atm, which is a worry at the very least. That said, we can't expect to offload him for a quality player that we can mold into a premiership CHB. But then again, I could be wrong so we'll see. It sounds like I'm sticking the knives into him but in all honesty, I see him at the club for a while now and I think with the proper development over an intense preseason he'd turn himself around. In short, I really do hope he matures into a good CHB while we have Dunn and Newton running amok up the other end of the ground
